Hey, i would really like to know your thoughts on older cartoons not mentioned in the video, to name a few: the pink panther series; tom and jerry, popeye; top cat, yogi bear. These shows were kinda different, carried a simplistic, not over the top captivating atmosphere. Although one thing with this type of shows was that, for the most part, they didn´t have singnificant story progression and changed settings between episodes, which made the more like short stories rather than a single story.

Like Palworld or Drawn Together. Unless you specifically mean it's different from Spongebob ripping off John K. or Miracle Star ripping off Gumball. We call it "respect" now, until global "property" owners flip their shit against poor people who actually do the work. Then imitation turns from flattery REAL quick, because somebody "intellectual" didn't get their share of profit for the emotional labor.
@aclstudios
@aclstudios 4 месяца назад
@@sboinkthelegday3892 Those situations aren't even remotely similar. Even the ones you named are all entirely different. Palworld had some copycat-looking monster designs, but gameplay etc. is entirely different. Drawn Together is just straight up parody of cartoon tropes. The Spongebob thing is complicated because much of the team who worked on Ren & Stimpy also worked on Spongebob, so it's not so much ripping off as it is just using what they already knew. The shows have way more differences than similarities. The Miracle Star example is the only true ripoff and China does that a lot due to lack of copyright laws, especially for international properties. Even then, CN never filed a suit because the cartoon was made for an entirely different market across the globe for a different purpose. None of the examples of anime-inspired western cartoons, or western-inspired anime, are derivative enough to warrant any type of lawsuit being taken seriously by any court of law.

Fun fact: Osamu Tezuka was a huge fan and friend of Carl Barks, the artist of the Donald Duck comics and creator of Scrooge McDuck. Tezuka attributes a part of his defining art style to Barks. The western and eastern animation culture mix together back and forth even when not immediately noticeable 😊

a lot of cartoons had hidden anime references, I remember Dexter's lab had a lot, one ep he fought a kaiju that was sleeping dormant in mt fuji and fought it in his mecha suit in tokyo, another ep paid homage to speed racer and one ep even had Dexter fight an anime villian in deedee's imaginary friends world. Fusionfall even reimagined CN cartoon characters in an anime style

I remember that episode, it starts out when dexter is a transfer student to Japan, the first two kids he meets are playing with Mecha model kits, then it turns into a giant mech stand off, not to mention like you said the robots Dexter's family used were combiner bots much the ones in Voltron, Power Rangers/Super Sentai, Transformers etc

dude, even BEN 10 OF ALL THINGS referenced 2 characters from Naruto. A show about a kid, who obtains an alien watch from outer space... It's pretty hard to imagining it referencing things like that but somehow it happens. i'm not the only one who thinks some of the characters in the show also look "anime-esc", right??

Dexter and PowerPuff Girls both took a lot from Anime. Dexter predated a lot of western animation doing that as in emulating the way anime is animated rather than the art design of characters.

5:10 G1 transformers designs are all based on various toys from Japan, which were naturally inspired by (or in some cases taken straight from) anime. Jetfire is a Valkyrie from Macross, for example. So indirectly it has more anime influence than most outsourced cartoons of that era

There WAS no "anime", that word mainly comes from fansubbers being pretentious and quite simply speaking Japanese like it's hors d'oeuvres. It was IMPOSSIBLE to cite inspiration from "anime", because Japanese animation was not treated as a monolith. In this modern way of historically rewriting them to the back of the bus, so we may posture about "allowing" them onto their own little lane in OUR society. And not mess with with our own Spongebob, ripping off John K. You can sweep appropriation under the rug claiming a LACK of racial component, and then go "gee, wonder how nobody in the 80's had invented another word for Japanimation yet". And this ideology is simply to stratify the society, so that other, current cheap-labor productions from Phiippines and Hong Kong, don't get their membership card to the western club. If there is a Taiwanese John K. or Jhonen Vasquez, that person doesn't GET credit. That's always been the attempt, to bury your averrage "weird foreign artist" like Kurosawa or Leone under Tarantinos and Geroge Lucases. USA doesn't do copy "right". They just copy and then demand license fees from everyone else, look at Disney. Look at countries like China that actually DO manufacturing, their bootlegs are from the SAME factories as their forced labor happens in, making the genuine goods. Then they don't pretend Miracle Star IS Gumball, they just want to make more episodes so they CALL IT Miracle star. Instead of Spongebob. That ADDITIONAL respect is twisted by the west to be "ripoff" when anyone else does it.

Disney loved Ghibli so much that they picked up distribution rights to their work in the early 2000s. That’s why all of the dub casts for Ghibli films up until Disney lost the rights had stacked casts and people who worked regularly with Disney.
@trika91
@trika91 4 месяца назад
I can’t explain why, but I love Disney’s redub of My Neighbor Totoro; the one with the Fanning sisters. I watched both English dubs, but Elle Fanning’s Mei was just too cute 🥰 Worse Disney dubs was Tells of EarthSea and The Secret World of Arrietty; the UK dub of Arrietty was 10x better.

I think Disney actually distributed Ghibli films since the late 90s with Kiki being one of the earlier ones. That kind of explains why some movies were dubbed more than one time in certain languages, since sometimes the dub was based on the Disney version, but there were dubs that were done with the Japanese version as a base

What’s sad is that despite being one of the best written animated shows of all time, Avatar is not popular in Japan. I’m also happy that modern animation are really building its own niche that isn’t just inspired by anime, but moving stuff forward. Like stuff like BoJack Horseman is very American, but it’s also an amazing and deep story.
@Ogre32890
@Ogre32890 4 месяца назад
When I was a kid I never really watched Nickelodeon. I was a Cartoon Network kid through and through. Because of that I never saw Avatar until I was an adult. Watching that through for the first time in my late 20s was like studying history for years and then suddenly realizing I had somehow skipped over an entire major world war and had been confused as to why things afterward were so different. Avatar is WONDERFUL and the only thing I really wish had been different in it is I wish we had more time with Zuko teaching Aang firebending near the end. They're dynamic was so great and I felt like I had been waiting for them to work together for the entire series up to then. Also, Teen Titans deserved more. I still wish to this very day I could see more of the old Teen Titans. The story and characters were so well written, the comedy was on point without being distracting from the continuity... And Slade was a legitimately terrifying villian. Plus I don't think I've ever seen comradery in a series featuring a group of heroes quite like in Teen Titans. What they went through to save Raven from her father? Insane. Maybe one day it will be revisited. If we can get a season finishing out Samurai Jack 11 years after the penultimate season then whose to say? I love that Gennedy Tartokovsky looked at Samurai Jack and basically said: My audience has grown up. Samurai Jack has to grow up as a series as well. I think a bitter sweet ending is exactly what SJ needed to have it was so great. Superb IP video as always. Thank you for this.

It was actually a French adaptation made by DiC and TMS, it was going to be called Lupin VIII and it'd have told the stories of Lupin and his friends descendants in the far future. Tbh, over the last 20yrs since ATLA came to be it's been very validating to hear all of the conversations and attitudes regarding ATLA and its relationship or adjacency to and roots in Japanese anime develop, because I used to get absolutely shidded on about it back then even though I always knew it wasn't definitionally Japanese anime and never argued that it was. It's also just really friggin cool that so many people don't just love it, but it's also seemingly unanimously regarded as one the greatest shows of all time that actually stands the test of time almost completely independent of nostalgia, and if anything its greatness only further enhanced by nostalgia while simultaneously making people envious of people that haven't seen it yet and wish they could experience it for the first time all over again.

I enjoy both anime and cartoons and it's cool to see this breakdown of what was inspired by what. Did you know Steven Universe was made by Rebecca Sugar who worked on Adventure Time, which was very much an outlier in terms of cartoons because it looks like a silly comedy on the outside and was made to be funny and viewed as individual episodes initially, but had fantastic plot and character development, while not having an anime style. It got really introspective and deep at parts, and is now being followed by Fionna and Cake. Adventure Time had a big impact on carroons that came after. I highly recommend it

From a documentary on anime I watched years ago, the reason why anime became so advanced as a medium in Japan was because of the recovery from WWII. There was no money for motion picture so manga (and eventually) anime became a more dynamic form of story telling due to the limited entertainment. You see the inverse with the American movie /tv industry.

Dude, you just have such a cool kind of way/vibe to you and how you do videos. And the topics you choose are basically always unique in one way or another, so it's just cool to lay back, grab a tea and watch them! Thank you for giving us something to look forward to every couple of months! =D

Early anime like Astroboy was inspired by western cartoons, so this just cycles back and forth forever.

Shout out IP! I've been a bit of an old head when it comes to anime for a while now so I usually just know a lot of the trivia when it comes to the behind the scenes making of stuff, but as you get more experienced in making vids you've brought up stuff and people even I did not know. Great job homie

This answered one of my longest standing questions about 80s-early 90s cartoons. I could tell that there was SOMETHING anime-esque about a lot of those cartoons. Great video!

I love that you made a point to cut yourself off before going into a 4 hour diatribe as if that’s something we wouldn’t watch. Love your videos man, you always teach something new and I appreciate how much effort clearly goes into these videos, from researching all the way down to editing and performing them. You’re doing great work!
