I am conflicted about Mel Gibson - there is his work, and there are his actions as a person.. it is difficult for me to reconcile the two........... just being honest
@@SDsc0rch ...try to comprehend his temptations. If you had 500 million dollars in the bank, and EVERYONE knew it, do you think youd get a moments peace? Fame is a curse to him. He loves his art.. but begs God for something...less. He is more torn by it than you are...
@@shawnyfin somehow God is able to draw straight lines with crooked sticks - I do not exempt myself from that statement - for some reason God chooses to work through fallible man to effect His will..
@@adamchewy2284 ...now now. Im sure that ALL Jews dont run the world with somekind of shadow government. Im sure some of them are down to earth, hard working folks. For instance, I know lots of Jews...Im pretty sure none of them own a bank or record company. I remember hearing about a rant like yours back in the late 1930s...in Europe...in Germany. I love it when foil hat guys say "do the research!" 🤣🤣🤣 yeah, Jews, the most persecuted people of all time (except maybe Native Americans), somehow in the last 70 years obtained their own country (one of the smallest ever) and took over the world. "Riiiight.." -Dr. Evil (who isn't a jew)
I have a book, in Spanish, which details how he suffered: First, the temple guards torture him. They completely disfigure his face. Then, the Romans. They use their flagrums, but not only they whip his back, bit his legs, feet, arms, his testicles, his forehead. After this, they take him, sit him down and one of the soldiers makes a crown -helmet to be more precise- which covers his whole head. They urinate on him. These are just some of things I've read. Too bad the book is not in English. I'd recommend it.
"The true suffer of Christ was even more violent than this...." No it wasn't because it never happened. The crucifixion of Jesus was merely symbolic, that was why it occurred during the Passover, and on a cross. The Catholic Church created Easter to take away the true meaning of the story and created a fixation on death and suffering. "So I believe showing how Christ suffer in this way is a good thing...." No, it's unbiblical. You are crucifying Jesus all over again (Hebrew 6:4-6). The crucifixion of Jesus (God) and the resurrection are happening all the time within those individuals. God is crucified on each child and rises within that individual centuries later.
Braveheart was the very first film to move me. I mean, yeah Disney films as a kid in the 80's and 90's had some tear jerk moments... but i still remember renting Braveheart with two of my friends, blocking out the light in the room and sitting there mesmerized for 3 straight hours! Imagine that, a kid... not saying a peep or having to get up to use the bathroom, none of that. All three of us sat there and were profoundly moved. It's borderline SouthPark cliche lol. We talked about it for days afterwards. Yeah, Gibson has a gift for making movies that move his audience. Not just with cheap sob story moments either, like Disney...
I worked as a correctional officer for a State prison for 25 years. Several years ago the prison allowed the Chaplin to show the movie, The Passion of the Christ because it was Easter. I never ever in all my years saw the reaction displayed by the inmates. They were 100% focused on the movie. At the end MANY of the inmates showed their emotions outwardly by crying. The old ways of prison life returned to it's ugly self.
Hi, please tell more about the last sentence in your enriching comment. Do u mean they didn`t repeat showing the movie or any other christian media? Or that the inmate returned to the same before watching the movie?? Thanks a lot for sharing your experience anyway.
Mayans are descendents of the true iseralites? Tribe of issachar? They lost their ways doing human sacrifices, instead of the sacrifices that God demanded of them. Just as the people who rebelled in early Jerusalem. Ie: book of duet, Levitt, judges, 1kings,2kings.
Im in awe. Films should be respected and appreciated like this. You have not only explained the specific stories, but also acutely drew out the symbols and archetype behind them.
Wow! I never even thought about these two movies having any similarities whatsoever. These commentaries are brilliant. I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing the rest of your videos. Thank you!
I found both films brilliant in their ways, though "Passion" was harder to take somehow, and "Apocalypto" more brilliant. The "city" in the latter is the most amazing and convincing evocation I've ever seen of hell on earth--a living hell, with people going about their business seemingly unaware of the place they are in, which poisons them more every moment they stay; unlike the real (i.e. non-re-created) hell whose remnants we see in films taken of the Nazi death camps, which are more horrible intellectually because they were real at the moment of filming, but though very compelling, horrifying, emotionally, less so than the scene in "Apocalypto" because Gibson has raised his evocation of the normal, living hell to high art. The ending of the latter film made perfect sense to me; we know that this was the beginning of the end of the bloody Aztec empire. Yet it has a (very proper) ambivalence too: the Spanish (and Portuguese in Brazil) brought Christianity, a possible and actual antidote, eventually, to slavery and human sacrifice, yet those who came in its name were failed Christians, already felled by their own greed and lust for power, not so different from that of the Aztec rulers they replaced.
calvin bamburg What the hell has abortion got to do with it? I didn't come here to listen to some zealot man talk about an issue he knows nothing about.
"a living hell, with people going about their business seemingly unaware of the place they are in, which poisons them more every moment they stay" You certainly poisoned yourself watching those two movies! Fortunately I had already wised up to Mel's tactics when The Passion of the Christ was released and refused to see it, even though it was heavily promoted by my mother's (Baptist) church. I stopped going when I realised what dickheads they are! 99.9% of people (including you) have no idea what these films mean, and how you are poisoned by them if you watch them in a completely passive manner. There were no Aztecs; they are complete fiction, as was the idea of human sacrifice.
David marzolino well, theres a pic (drawing) that was found on a pyramid in Egypt the archeologists , i believe, say is the oldest pic of Christ. You can google it.
Very interesting. Outstanding analysis! Your grasp of the subtleties, the comparative analogies and your quite plausible interpretation of the object or message to be transmitted, shows a deep understanding and a fine brain.
Very interesting and enlightening comparisons between the respective themes and subject matter of the films. Many thanks for sharing your interpretations.
Fantastic review. I get accused by many of over-analysis, but I think it too many don’t pay attention to the details. Film can be very revealing. It is a great medium for communicating larger ideas, to a greater extent than novels. As we get more immersive in our media, I truly hope creators remain committed to delivering latent content that reveals greater truths.
@@youthnation1 No brother. I meant to say, i never thought movies that way before. I think you are brilliant Matt. I wish i could of know you better. You can tell God is important to you. And i feel the same way. But have no outlet and could never articulate the way you do my man. Rest in peace Matt.
Great video, and interesting analysis, even if I don't agree with all your points. I love both these movies so much, especially Apocalypto. Keep up the good work!
@@youthnation1 Well, I agree that Mel Gibson's Catholicism (especially in regard to suffering, torture, and all the gnarly bits of that particular faith) informs his work as a director. All his movies have those themes of stylized violence, death and rebirth that very much vibe with his old school religious views. But from what I can gather, it wasn't that huge of an inspiration for Apocalypto in particular. The overall structure of capture - escape - chase was highly influenced by the film The Naked Prey, a childhood favorite of Gibson's. I also feel like Apocalypto is more of a popcorn flick, a roller coaster ride, whereas The Passion is much more reverential and serious. They both have Mel's directorial fingerprints all over them, but they're very different movies with very different tones. In my humble opinion, it's like comparing apples to oranges.
i'm sorry dude but you are really the most insightful video essayist on this platform. i feel so bad for peeps who are turned off by your nomenclature and miss out on the truth of what you're discussing. it's really quite remarkable
I own both these movies and respect and Revere hell Gibson's genius as a director bringing these jewels to the masses ...kudos/ job well done, cinematic masterpiece🎬
This is the first movie i've seen by Logos Made Flesh. Looking through some of the other videos, I see that symbolism is a big factor. I will have to glance through the videos again- hoping to see something on mother! mother! is my new favorite movie. Heavy, heavy, heavy on symbolism and an analogy for at least a dozen topics, not just mother earth and her destruction. Excited to find this!
Absolutely love your videos man. If I could make a bit of a criticism, it would be to work on/lower the levels of the audio from the backing movie clips. I've noticed this in a few of them: The Memento one, Shawshank, No Country, and this one. Sometimes the sound of the film audio basically drowns out what you're saying and I have no idea what was spoken. It doesn't happen all the time but is noteworthy. Other than that, brilliant analysis of each!! Really enjoy your work :)
@@youthnation1 I think that one had a similar issue but let me re-watch it as I might be wrong. That was also a really really complex topic that I didn't fully understand because I haven't watched the movie but yeah - I love how you do these videos!! I would love one on Donnie Darko. You actually inspired me to do a thematic film series on my blog for my top 5 films of all time. DD will def be in there, as well as Memento and No Country. I think themes are the most important aspect and what actually makes a movie memorable. I can't stand all that other tripe.
@@youthnation1 Watching it again now. Take back what I said. It's improved 1,000 fold. Great work man! I think the reason I wasn't paying attention to that part is just how much of an incredible mind F the explanation of the movie itself is. Lol it's making my brain hurt in a good way, forcing me to really grasp the concepts in my head and think very deeply about the topic itself. In watching and listening, I was reminded of Deja Vu and how that kind of almost seems like us predicting the future in the past, but then remembering it in the present. Does that make sense? Not all cases of Deja Vu are ones that we haven't experienced before, i.e. you kind of intuitively know if it's something you've already done, or you can even recall when it happened in some cases. It's the ones you know you haven't experienced before that make it such an eerie feeling.
I loved loved loved apocalypto when i first saw it- i couldn't explain why exactly, perhaps because of the underlining story of myth and origin (please read Joseph Campbell). This video helped me to see why I love apocalypto so much- it's the comparative stories that are found in humanity and that connect us to the spiritual. This video is beautiful and awesome. I had no idea that two movies were connected. Thank you!!!
This is a very interesting exploration about how the two films tell a larger overarching narrative story. I would argue that Apocalypto is more an allegory for the fall of man in the garden and the suffering of mankind that results from his fall; there's also the promise of salvation. The chief elder telling the story of the serpent, the fear that came over man after he had acquired knowledge is preceded by the tribe's exile from the garden. What follows is the story of mankind's suffering at the hands of an oppressive slave master. The sacrifice on the pyramid represents man's ultimate destiny, which is overshadowed by the promise of God's salvation. The ending of the movie is the promise coming to fruition. When the conquistadors arrive, they bring with them the Gospel of salvation and the defeat of Satan's power over men; this is illustrated by the Aztecs being mesmerized by the ships and forgetting all about Jaguar Paw.
Tyler Durden I’d love to see that movie. 500 hundredth anniversary is just ahead - I think 2021. The Conquest of New Spain is a riveting book - being an eyewitness account of these events.
Good work, the end made me think even tho we can not get o ,a bigger threat can unite us even if it unites us by threat and fear, maybe also he was telling the after story of the crucifiction through the other medium, thanks for the mental stimulation, enjoyed alot
@@damianvarnham1753 No it hasnt. Its most likely the real thing. The carbon 14 dating wasnt done properly. The Shroud has been repair numerous times in the past and they took the sample from the corners when they should have taken it from the middle but ofcourse realistically couldnt. The Shroud is real thats why they have NO CLUE about how it was made and thats why new CSI details about it are discovered to this day.
@@kostasz7z the carbon dating was done correctly, the argument from the church is the piece tested was from a repair, restoration on the shroud not from a part of the original Which is fine, but suspiciously they will not surrender any of the supposedly original material for additional testing ?
I was getting ready to rip you in a comment for trying to connect these two movies!!! Until I watched it and have to say... I was wrong! Lol well done bro! Thanks for the video!
Thank you very much for your comments. You've made my day. I know this is a bit of stretch for most people. Same goes for Cast Away's connection to Back to the Future. But filmmakers do it all the time.
yes that is exactly right... it is a pattern... all of us who are in christ will go from a garden to darkness to escape and redemption through suffering and death..........
