How are Kyudo and Archery Different?

Kyudo is the Japanese form of archery, but how is it different from the Western archery you see at the Olympics? The largest difference is the goal.
In archery, your goal is to advance your skills in hitting the target at a higher precision, whereas in kyudo, you aim to train and discipline your mind. Because precision is not the primary necessity, the bow used in kyudo has not changed its shape from ancient times.
Which means they have not made the bow more convenient or easier to handle on purpose, because the true goal is not to hit the target. This makes it crucial to master the correct posture in order to draw the bow. Within those movements, you are required to obtain the ideal way of breathing and to train your mental condition to always maintain a calm mind.
So drawing a Japanese bow is actually quite difficult, and even if you train every single day, it will take you at least 3 months before being able to shoot at a target.

In answer to the humorous comments, kyudo practitioners can and do hit the target. It’s just not the point. It’s the paradox of kyudo: take a goal oriented practice, concentrate on the process, ignore the goal, achieve the goal because of focusing on the process. Hit or miss, no exultation, no disappointment. The challenge of non attachment. It’s a philosophy as much as a practice. A long time practitioner said to me, “Once you get the physical part down, then it gets really hard because it’s all about your mind.” Can confirm.

If I'm not mistaken, when samurai actually took to the field they would primarily do so as heavily armored horse archers. Kyudo probably solidified into what it is today because guns rendered that particular niche inefective along with foot archery, which left it without a practical purpose to fill. Kind of like how fencing used to be a legitimate martial art that nobles would practice in to prepare for rapier duels, but shifted away from that into more of a sport once duels fell out of favor in europe.

Kyudo bow looks and is held like Eskimo bows. My father who taught me to shoot said it was more important to calm your mind and breathing which will make you more successful in hunting. A Eskimo bow is alot longer than bows used for archery. I think it's close to 2 meters, I know the bow was taller than I am. (152.4 cm) My father was the best bow hunter of our tribe. His bows were burned with him on his death, so he would have them in the underworld.

Hi, I used to be part of the regional team of my local city I and used to shoot traditional and compound bows and I would like to say that I think it is similar both due to how disciplined one has to be to shoot even the compound bow which has mechanical aid to shoot harder and faster. I would even describe it as a personal fight to be able to relax and be strong enough to maintain posture and fight the wind and keep your mind empty waiting to shoot without rushing it and even release the arrow the right way. Some of us in the team would even say that wind is purely psychological, which in some sense it is, but it is something that only an experienced archer could say.

Compact doesn't mean easier. Central Asia horse bow are compact enough to be used on horse back but the kick is also great, equivalent if not stronger than longbow (which is also have a very strong kick). It's difficult to start archery culture from scratch since you have to dedicate your entire life to become a great archer. Before English could field their archer they need to train their citizens every weekend and it still needs hundreds of year before the results shows.

So instead of using a modern compound bow with gears and a lazer sight attached. Kyudo uses the old traditional bow that was used 1000s of years ago... I guess that would be more challenging.

but why people in Kyudo seems looks like they praise more to people who can hit the center of the target(or is just what i think). And i thought so far the big difference between Kyudo and normal archery is Kyudo mostly use for Sacred ritual or ceremony and normal archery either they use for hunting, competition, and etc.

After watching this video i just realized my style is more like kyudo the archery, hear me out. I think compound bows are too fancy and i prefer my wooden recurve(pulls a lot of weight). People think I'm bad until i offer to switch and they can't perform with mine.

Japanese bows are large and strong. The arrow shaft has steel inside, so it has a large mass, and the arrow feathers are slanted. This arrow had a heavy mass and rotated at a high speed, so it could penetrate hard wooden shields and iron plates. The arrows penetrated 3 pieces of wood with a thickness of 9mm, so the shield could not block the arrows. For this reason, samurai armor was made up of layers of iron plates. 13th-century painting depicts a Mongol soldier being shot behind a shield.
