I love blued armour ❤. Amazing how many pieces in the Royal Armouries still have some traces of bluing around river holes and edges. The Medieval world was a lot more colourful than we tend to think it was
@gawkthimm6030
@gawkthimm6030 9 месяцев назад
I read somewhere that at some point during the late 18th and early 19th century, a lot of stored historical armor was re-polished to a finer polish and often removing the remnant of the original blued effects as they were sold off to collectors.
@jaybluff281
@jaybluff281 9 месяцев назад
@@gawkthimm6030 Yes, sadly. Early 20th-century collectors and their knight-in-shining armor romanticism destroyed a lot of original patinas and finishes. The Bashford-Dean Frankenarmors in the Met Museum are prime examples.

I think in movies they don't like shiny as much because it is harder to remove reflections (like with c3p0)

Same. Bluing is such a cool process, especially when you look at how it ages. I love looking at old Winchester rifles where the blued barrels turned to a brown and the case hardened receivers turned gray. Makes you think about what armor looked like out of the shop 500 years ago.

I worked for an armoury crafter some time ago and if you’re into medieval armoury you should go and try to build a brigandine. There are lots of beautiful models and the way they work is just awesome. By the way, the Tewkesbury Abby has a wooden door that is covered in brigandine plates, that were shot through by arrows. And if I remember correctly these plates were horse armoury only.

At first I thought shine as possible so the sun blinds your opponents. Then you blued it and WOW. That's gorgeous. I also thought they'd do some tooling to the leather before dyeing it. Adds a touch of class. Still beautiful. Nice work L.A. and Alec.

Great choice on placement of the armours Mark. It shows who made it clearly, your pride in the piece and where it came from but it also has the added bonus effect of looking like a simple bit of decoration almost like a coat of arms. It's mad to think about how much quicker it is imagine having to do that with hand held stones etc....

Jamie asking are you going to take off that chainmail. Lol! I get Alec's reply. As a former extra on film sets I had to wear chainmail and armour for months at a time. It became very comfortable. In the off season between filming stints I would add weights to my arms and legs and carry a knapsack with maybe 12 or 14 kilos of weight in it and walk my dog for several miles or maybe a bit further just to feel like I was getting enough exercise to equal what i had done before. That was a few years ago and I don't do as much now, neither does my dog now that he's older. I miss that level of fitness. My wife tells me that I was born about 1000 years too late for my attitude. I'm not sure about that because I would miss video games and TV shows, but deep down I know for sure that chainmail and a swordbelt on my hip makes me walk a little taller and feel better even if I was never a warrior.

Alec you should sit down and make a full set of armor and show everything including the mistakes you make while learning and explaining the time you spend on each piece. you have experience with forging so i would expect you could figure it out faster or be more efficient with your hammer work but the knowing that even good blacksmiths always have more to learn is something i've noticed as a theme in your channel showing that even years of experience doesn't make you perfect I personally think it would be an amazing series probably a long one though so you never know.
