How Arsenal BEAT Manchester City | Tactical Preview

In today's video I provide a tactical preview looking ahead to the crunch match at the top of the Premier League table, this Sunday: Manchester City vs Arsenal. We focus on Arsenal's change in tactical approach against Ange Postecoglou's Spurs side, and how that provides the template to BEAT Pep Guardiola's Man City. We also delve into Arsenal's 0-0 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday, analysing why the fluidity Mikel Arteta allowed his team, as well as the defensive solidity once again, can cause problems for Man City.
I also cover Pep Guardiola's tactics and his changes to his Man City team in-possession this season, why they matter, as well as potential avenues Arsenal can exploit. There is particular focus on their 0-0 draw with Inter Milan in the first league phase game of the Champions League, their 2-1 victory over Brentford in the 2024/25 Premier League.
Arsenal come into the tie off the back of a 0-1 win in the North London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur, and will be looking towards Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, Gabriel Martinelli, Jurrien Timber, William Saliba, David Raya, Gabriel Magalhaes, Ben White, and more once again if they are to beat City, and go top of the Premier League. Will Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, Jorginho, or Riccardo Calafiori make starts?
As for Man City, the key question will be if Kevin De Bruyne will be fit for the clash with the Gunners? Will Phil Foden take his place? And does Pep go for the same tactical set-up he has deployed this season? Using Bernardo Silva in a freer role, Rico Lewis in the high right pocket, Erling Haaland in the middle, flanked by the likes of Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku, and Savinho. Rodri will return, will Kovacic partner him? Who will make the defensive line out of Kyle Walker, John Stones, Akanji, Ruben Dias, and Josko Gvardiol?

Exciting stuff. Especially without the recovery pace of Van de Ven we can definitely punish them. It's just about mentality Vs citeh, we need to be brave and decisive on the break

Thanks so much. It’s more about trying to find an identity without his imprint-in my opinion at least. Right now, the template we have is well equipped stylistically for City. After that, we will get to work on an ARSENAL team without Ø.

Top vid Harv,i actually thought in the Atalanta game it’s the most positional freedom ive seen arteta give the players in a while,in order to move around the M2M press.The execution was just really poor. I don’t believe Oddeagard is a miss for this type of game we’ll play against city,we need to revert back to more of a 4-2 build up rather than a 3-2 I felt at times Last night the midfield was too congested with timber inverted,it was almost a 3 man pivot,timber thrived against spurs with more freedom to roam on the left with overlaps/underlaps. Jorginho also has to start for me,I feel like his pass selection & ability to block passing lanes is a lot better than TP in this current moment,if it was me I would also consider a start for Calafiori but I doubt arteta throws him in,was really impressive in his cameo. I’m going for a tight 1-0 win,COYG!

Thanks mate. It certianly was. Arteta completely threw positional rigidity out of the window-not just in terms of rotations but the actual shapes we formed on the pitch. It was a lot for the players. Just lacking cohesion really. I agree. Back to a more rigid foundation for City. Keep Timber wide or (where possible) in that high pocket-gives us upside where we don’t have it. Loved Cala’s cameos so far. Will do a vid on him soon. Sunday suits us. Let’s see if we can make it stick.

I'm very confident for Sunday. We've got players in our defence who can dominate their attack if they're on it. From there, it's all about maximising our transitions. Can get ugly since we are still trying to get rid of Ø's imprint on this team, but the 3 points are there to be taken if we can execute our plan. If there was any game for Martinelli to get his mojo back... This is it.

I’m confident, but I agree the key is making it stick when we swarm forward. The Atalanta game was a really interesting one, and I dare say the consensus would be much rosier if Nelli scored that chance. We did extremely well nullifying the m2m press vs Spurs and Atalanta, but last night lacked the same cohesion on the ball. I expect things to be better on Sunday, but still comes down to making it stick. The game state suits us on Sunday. After that, we will talk about the after👍👍

Not sure if going long vs dias and guardiol or stones will do it but arsenal may be able to contain their attack, last year away to city was a draw for ex. I still think city win this one. Also, arteta always struggled with rotation and given busy schedule and injuries, could be problematic in upcoming games

@@harveygrationneed to integrate nwaneri after the city game. I like trossard but hes inaccurate with his foward passing and loses the ball in precarious postions when he drops deeper. They'll be too much on saka's shoulders when it comes to chance creation post city if Arteta doesnt use Nwaneri.
