How AutoZone Is Holding Off Amazon... For Now

Auto parts retailer AutoZone and its closest competitors are for now fending off competition from e-commerce giants such as Amazon by offering a lot of in-store service, huge inventories, and very tight local supply chains that can deliver parts in a matter of minutes. And investors think AutoZone actually has some growth left in it.

Lol all Amazon needs to do is simply buy some other auto parts shop or fast food restaurent and push them up until they compete with others and then they will have that segment too. I don't think it would be hard for Amazon to take over them either.
@devonrusinek5807

@@gabbar51ngh You've got the idea. Amazon has historically lost money on Prime, but they divert their vast AWS profits to Prime for influence & marketing's sake. You could make the argument that the Whole Foods acquisition was partly that, and there's no reason the same trend can't persist with the acquisition of an autoparts store.

I worked at an AutoZone warehouse. We had a store by the entrance. Some business would buy parts there even though other stores (maybe from other dealers) were closer because if the store did not have an item in stock, then they could probably get it from the warehouse in about an hour instead of a day or two. They were not a hub or mega hub, but they did not need to be with a major warehouse in their back yard.

I needed to replace my garbage disposal the other day and I noticed Amazon had "same day" delivery as an option. I placed the order at 10:00am and it was on my front porch when I got back from lunch. I'm about 2 hours from the closest major city too. I hate Amazon and everything they stand for, but man are they convenient. They're only going to continue improving their logistics and I wouldn't be surprised to see them offering auto parts in an hour or less, or buying an existing auto parts chain just to try to take over that business too.

Autozone is then taking the playbook of extinct regional chain auto parts : the retail , the warehouse , the jobber , and the two stepper. They ate the independent regional competition alive on pricing wars and are now operating as your traditional regional branded program chain ( Napa , Carquest ). The move from DYers into professional installers probably meant no more stocking just the Chinese junk but also the white label aftermarket stuff. Gotta give to them. They have their stuff together. Hey guys, love your reviews :) Interesting comment at end to the 'tune' of the effect of electric cars on demand for auto parts is unknown. I think it could be maybe reasonably deduced? We own 9 cars in the family with 5 drivers: 2 4x4's, a people mover, 3 sedans and a convertible...and now 2 Leafs (Leaves?). Didn't want to buy one after last grocery getter was crashed, but now ended up with two of them. They just work so well for us, albeit with limited driving pleasure - in my view. What we didn't count on, apart from the fuel savings (we have a lot of solar so power use largely offset) was the almost total lack of servicing apart from washer bottle refills and tyres. We live on edge of town and often up late so public transport weak for us. Still love ICE but can see the massive change coming. I watched this article and thought with all the shots of parts, don't need that, don't need that... Given the great analysis CNBC does, this could be a great topic for review in future :)

@@kouayep0 they don't make enough cars for most Americans to buy one. As far as I'm aware that's only because they can't make them fast enough. Also they're getting cheaper, and cost per mile are cheaper in their lifetime considering maintenance and travel cost ( and you're less likely to die). You haven't seen it yet because its still happening.

There's billions of cars on the road their not going to vanish with a billion Tesla cars their batteries probably won't last all that long they eventually will make you recharge more in long run also vast amount of people probably can't afford those cars

I like these CNBC competition comparison videos. Autozone and Napa are one of few retailers I drive to, to get good reliable stuff.

I think it was really smart for them to start linking up with mechanic shops and I think they really need to start focusing a lot more of their business towards that and the reason why I say that is because a lot of people in this generation have no idea how to work on a car and they're not mechanically inclined therefore I see a lot of people just going to the mechanic and letting them deal with it

The boomers don’t mind replacing seeing and replacing their own parts.

thespiritbomb it’s definitely not just a boomer thing lol. I replaced most everything on my own car that didn’t require opening the engine bay. Oil, brake pads, fluids, battery, spark plugs, coils, etc... I only stopped when I got a Model S but I fully intend to change the pads on that when they wear down. Honestly, it’s a little disappointing that there’s basically nothing else on it that needs changing in any reasonable interval

Steve Edward working on it doesn’t mean you can’t go order the parts. There will always be car guys

go2yanks if your car isn’t still on warranty, it’s justified to replace things yourself. There will always be home mechanics. It was a joke

They recently opened a mega hub near me. Not only does this location have many more parts than a regular store, it's also open 24 hours.
