Still the most baffeling defensive lapse I have ever seen. To put that into context I saw a goalie kick a ball out and manage for it to loop back over his head and into the goal. He did it on two seperate occasions. Not a professional footballer so was not deliberate just unskillfull. The Maguire errant header then wrestle both the Tottenham player and Luke Shaw to the ground before the goal is scored still is the strangest reason for a goal I ever saw. And I saw the Liverpool Sunderland game where the ball hit an object from the crowd and go into the net. This still tops that.

Don't think his head has been right since Greece. Also think he hasn't stopped getting criticism since the Tottenham game. Can't be good for the mind. Some people cope with pressure like Beckham after 98 other people fall appart. I think Maguire is fully aware of his errors and resents the relentless pressure and abuse because of it. Hence enjoying playing for England more as he doesn't get the same pressure on international duty.

The problem of Maguire is confidence and he needs to play in a more defensive system where he is protected by a midfield. He does not have the pace to play a high line. He does not really match with what ten Hag will probably implement at Manchester United.

I agree the high line of defence isolated him and highlighted his lack of pace, making him a target for opposition players to run at; but I think he has also been an easy target for his own team mates, many of whom decided in 2021 to run/tackle only when it suited them; they quickly realised that if they didn't bother to help in defense, or even to run into space, his problems would make headlines and memes while their laziness and selfishness went relatively unnoticed - they were collectively to blame for the bad results, but they made sure he got singled out as the worst one, which imo is antithesis of team spirit and a huge problem for united. As a Leeds fan, some might say I should take pleasure in this, but I don't because it's bad for football as a whole - shame on them.

I think Maguire is symptomatic of the lack of long-term planning at United. He was brought in under Ole, like Wan-Bissaka, when we were playing a counterattacking style, which benefited him. Once Ole decided we were going to be more of a possession team, it exposed more of Maguire's faults, particularly against better teams. This is why United need a proper D.O.F., to have a set vision that the club operates under.
@ayeknowthis6959

There’s also the aspect of they were playing with no fans on the pitch so less pressure and no Ronaldo so even less pressure and I suppose bring in your side of the story with the change from counter attacking style with a shaky midfield anyway its going to expose the defence and him the most as captain.

@stevencooke6451
@stevencooke6451 2 года назад
I think it is very difficult to assess what a player's true worth is. I thought 80 million pounds was very steep, just as I thought that Barcelona's paying Dembele was ludicrous. However, if you think that a certain player (and world-class central defenders are not easily found) could be the difference between top four and winning the Premier League, or someone who could even get you one step further in Champions' League then it might be money well spent. Perhaps the problem lies in the fact that Man U were not that close to winning an EPL title or reaching the semi-finals of Champions League.
@maliciousbloke
@maliciousbloke 2 года назад
The difference between his performances for England and Man Utd are the interesting bit. He's a centre-back who's good in the air but has no pace, which you can get away with in the modern game if the rest of the defensive setup is adequate and you have another fast centre-back alongside him. For Utd he's got Lindelof next to him, who isn't the quickest (or Eric Bailly I guess lol) and a midfield that just can't be arsed to give any defensive cover at all. For England he usually ends up playing next to Kyle Walker (one of the quickest defenders in the league) and with two holding midfielders infront of him. Yeah it's no surprise he's getting targeted and exposed for Utd but he works just fine in the England setup.

Its simple really: every other player who has disappointed recently for United has the option to hide. Pretend to press, but do it when you know the player has an easy pass and you won't have to actually tackle or get near the ball; pretend to track back, but deliberately get into areas where its unlikely you'll have to do very much, make runs, but just slow enough or in such a direction where you probably won't get the ball or you won't be able to do anything with it when you do. You can appear to the untrained eye that you're doing the best you can, but make sure that the spotlight never falls on you for long. But you can't do that a CB, and if you are a CB, and you have 8-9 players in front of you (or even 4 or 5) who are doing that type of thing, you're going to be the one getting embarrassed again and again, because unlike more advanced positions, you don't get to decide if and when the spotlight falls on you. Maybe 80 million was always going to be a ridiculous price, but I can guarantee we wouldn't be having this conversation if he'd gone to almost any other team in the world. I'm not saying he should take none of the blame, but I will say that currently he's taking the blame for a whole squad's worth of poor performances.

as someone who has a blood-curdling hatred for maguire this comment actually gave me pause. So well said. Everyone is just phoning it in, every game, and it's unbearable to watch. But I think the uniquely infuriating thing about maguire in particular is less his performances and more that he's an unlikable idiot. The fact that he genuinely thinks he's good enough to play for Man U, and says things to the press like "there's a reason im in the lineup every week," is so fucking bullshit. The fact that he will post compilations on twitter of him sending in crosses under zero pressure, while the team keeps losing week in and week out. Like, perhaps read the fucking room dude? That's what makes me so irrationally angry about him. He's incapable of humility. Or self-reflection. It'd be one thing if his quality just wasn't there and he owned it. I do think the change of playstyle is the main reason that caused his drop of form. Ole's been playing counter attacking football (which suits him) in the 19/20 n 20/21 season, but with the signing of Ronaldo, Sancho n Varane last summer, its literally a 'Must" to switch to a highline and possession dominant system, which causes a few players (Maguire, Rashford, Mctominay etc) to 'flop'. Also, maintaining his captaincy is a big mistake considering there's a few more senior or better players than him (Ronaldo, De gea, Bruno, Varane etc) in the team.

When a player falls off so fast - there is usually three most common reasons 1. Career ending injury - which we know he hasn’t suffered 2. Fallout with team / management or coach - which we know wasn’t the case (May be recently he had some problems but not before his performance fell off first) 3. Personal issues - lack of focus can be because of other personal issues loss of loved one / trauma / drug abuse / mental disorder like depression or anxiety etc. I think the third point makes most sense in McGuire’s case - he is no longer mentally the leader and defender he once was. He is no longer focused 100% on the game. Nothing else can explain Losing track of the ball as a central defender and not being able to tell your teammates from the opposition. I think United Management needs to look into what’s going on with his mental health and focus of getting him back mentally to his old self. If not they will end up with an 80 million dollar liability which they have to get rid of

Yes and no. Maguire has been exposed because 1. Ole changed from counter attacking 4231 with Pogba, Herrera, Matic or McTominay Fred Bruno to a 433 bringing in Ronaldo and Sancho, team shape and tactics changed slightly leaving Maguire exposed, and 2. Maguire went from a perfectly reliable Centreback to a nightmare problem causing mistake after mistake. Ten Hag is probably abig reason alot of chnages have been made interms of people behind the scenes. Ten Hag 'Despite it being a beautiful club, I would never just start. I wanted to create good working conditions first, so every detail had to be taken care of.' Honestly, being a manutd fan, growing up watching the 06-09 team, he's by far the worst Captain I've seen represent the club. I'm sure most Manutd fans can agree, we've just been riding it out until the end of the season, especially after knowing Mr Erik Ten Hag is going to be the new manager. In previous years, we'd have gone for pochettino, just because he's a familiar face to people in the media, like Gary Neville. They were shocked that the majority of the fan base wanted Ten Hag. Honestly, I don't wanna get to far ahead of myself, but this seems like the first manager where we MIGHT actually see the board give him what he wants and needs to succeed long term. There are alot of things that need to be changed, some changes being made behind the scenes is what's most important, and then allowing the manager to slowly bring in and get rid of the players that don't fit in with his plan. And allowing him to bring in his people in terms of coaching staff and assistant which looks set. Let's see what happens. Apparently he's going to be at the Crystal Palace game. Also I hope Rangnick stays, we know he has been calling it out as is, making the problems subtlety clear to the world.

You can't expect more from him cause that's his peak potential and the demand to represent such club exposed him heavily. He can't even replicate a 50% of Vidic duty even with the Arm band. The same critics goes to Luke Jiggly Shaw, always been fat and lazy which leads to many setbacks and injuries.

You basically sum it up. Maguire works perfectly in a defensive-minded team with low press and short distances in the team. Clubs that prefer counter-attacking -like Ole did the first season after he came. His traits are very good in such a role. When he gets challenged on pace or one on one in an open space, he just doesn't have the required attributes. It isn't rocket science. The bad passing and stupid mistakes are most likely due to a lack of confidence and nerves. Pressure, after he got the captaincy, did him no favors, and the social media ridicule is another factor. Safe to say, United would be smart to take the loss on this one, and move him on this summer. There will be plenty of teams playing with a back five, or with a low block that will want him, but they will likely not pay more than about 40-50 million for him, tops.

I think what perfectly sums up Maguire is using Maguire in United is like filling a circular hole with a square block.... it's a dumb fit, likely impossible. You can't say Harry Maguire is a shit ass player, recenty obviously would yes otherwise, yes! But he had a brilliant euros, and I think he was better last season prior the euros aswell. I think if were to play in a back three or in a low block side, not necessarily Burnley, but say a Inter Milan or Atleti aswell, he'll do fine. He's tall, a good header of a ball, but he's not very quick or mobile. He worked well last season under OSG cause they played moments-counter ball and he always had players around him to make for the through balls and stuff he couldn't cover. This season United wanted to play high octane rock and roll football and that meant fall backs going high and Harry being left to conver a good chunk of a pitch on his own. Sounds like a baby problem but Harry never had it in him to play this kind of football he just didn't! He never should've been made the captain, that I think was absolutely stupid! We can go on about what should've rather been done but I guess Roy Keane is spot on in saying that if he was made the captain, that speaks A LOT about the squad he joined, cause it's baffling that there was no one else who got it who have been there way longer than he is.

What happened to this guy is one of the worst things that can happen to anyone in modern internet society. I usually like your Videos because your Focus is right on things that beg you to trigger them. Its very good and enjoyable. But ffs. Leave this guy alone already and try not too hard to benefit from it. Im not sure how others could compensate the pressure as CB in one of the worst manu teams in a veeeery long time, while having Pogba already at Home again on his mind and a returning manu Legend that really did give it all to score all these goals. Unfortunately he is who he is and will show it when he is not able to perform because of the whole team. It is not something he will be able to pick up aged 30 with whatever pace he had in decline.

First of all, I found you completely fair. You've nicely explained why his English performances are still relatively solid. I also had forgotten that initially, he was quite successful at Man United. I think his price tag and then being controversially given the captaincy did set him for failure. However, as you have shown, neither element led to an immediate drop in form. I seem to recall that, prior to his Greek misadventures, he was not the constant subject of ridicule. I have no idea if that has any cause and effect relationship but, something changed. I think there is an element of "piling on" in terms of Maguire. While his errors have increased, I sometimes think the criticism is directed too much at him, and not the rest of the team who are, no doubt, losing the ball much more, failing to track back, and putting Maguire into risky situations. Of course, he is not doing himself any favours while in those situations--as the stats you showed clearly indicate. I guess that the hope that Varane could help settle him down was a pipe dream. Obviously, Real Madrid allowed two of it long term defensive stalwarts go for a reason.

At this point in Maguires career he has to leave united. He’s been their scapegoat all season long and has lost the respect of players, coaches and most off all the united fans. The hate he’s getting right now has clearly taken a toll on his playing abilities and overall confidence, but I think he’s only getting so much hate because in this dumpster fire of a season it’s easy to pin all of United’s problems on Maguire. I think it would be best for Club and player to separate sooner rather than later. He needs a fresh start in a team that fits his playing style more. Also even if he finds a better patch of form next season as soon as united make a mistake in defense he’ll always be the first one the fans will pounce on. If he does stay he should at least give up his captaincy to maybe appease the fans a little.

Maybe scapegoat isn’t the perfect term for him. I am not trying to say he hasn’t made some terrible mistakes, because he definitely has, but in my opinion he gets almost all the blame for United’s horrendous season which just isn’t fair in my opinion. It’s easy to look at maguires mistakes over the season and blame him and him alone which is neither fair nor accurate. So in some sense he is being used as a scapegoat by united fans to justify a bad performance by their entire team.

I personally feel Maguire is being casted as a scapegoat. Yes, his mistakes are meme worthy but it is also important to note context. Harry is not a fast CB and tactically, he gets exposed when the defense is pressed high and his teammates are also not fast to help cover for him. He plays more stable for England because he has Kyle Walker, one of the fastest and strongest fullbacks, who can help cover for Maguire's lack of pace. Even then with Casmeiro and Varane, it is still not enough pace to cover for Maguire. It's not Maguire's fault that he isn't playing up to the £80 million, that is on United who chose to pay that much for a player that doesn't have pace and to join a team who's defensive setup doesn't mesh with him. To also top on his mistakes, you have a scapegoat for United's shortcomings... Had he gone to City, things would be much different as he would have Walker to help cover for him and Harry would mainly serve as the rock for the backline figuratively and literally, he can be the extra frontman due to his size and aerial ability and can get away with it because of the speed Walker has to fill in defensively for Maguire.

I love the RU-vid clip where Lurch throws his shirt to a kid in the crowd, who promptly throws it back ! 😂

He peaked early. Prematurely slowed down. You saw the best of Harry a while ago. He’s finished at the highest level.

Slowed down? He always had the turning circle of a ship. The reason he's been so bad is because his confidence is shot. The atmosphere at the club is toxic and being captain certainly hasn't helped. The mental aspect of professional sport cannot be underestimated.

Check stats at 7:48 Am I reading it wrong, or he actually tries harder as player, but much more attacks coming to him directly. Its like all teams discovered his weak side (speed) and adjusted accordingly.

Well I think the expectations for Maguire to perform good this season was high because of the wonderful season they had as he influenced Man U to finish second and lastly is the captaincy because now he is afraid to make mistakes as he is a team leader. Maguire is a good defender but Eric should give David de Gea the captain's arm belt then Maguire will return to his best form that made Man U to buy him. I think Erik should not play a high line like Liverpool as their defender's lack pace as they can not get behind the ball in time and it exposes Maguire.

Hey mate, I would also like to mention these rushed preseasons throughout co-vid period and condensing periods of play, while there are more international games now put a way too large toll on the player's body. Injury is more prone today than before, despite measures being at a way higher standard.
