This engine would have still been going if you hadn't overridden the knock control/low fuel pressure protection on ecu :( It's incredible what damage the detonation did to those doritos, couldn't believe the massive dent, and scuff on the other one, insane! Overall not bad for the years of crazy power that was pushing out, I can't wait to see it rebuilt bigger and better! :D *PS shout out to Abel!* any chance you could cover some of the repair work to his RX2? I was gutted when it got hit :(

My motor a regular s4 13b t2 motor has been beaten to shit by a previous owner with non turbo parts, I take the motor install a proper fuel system and a standalone and ran the motor into the ground with daily driving and tracks days go to the track and driving it home no issues for 3 years (with low compression due to chipped apex seal) my 7 has never left me stranded and I show people and they dont understand why rotary are one of the greatest performance engines out there.

Scooby13b 1.5 years ago I picked a 64,000 mile 1 owner '88 turbo ii I dunno how it was running the way I got it. Soon as you hit boost it would over boost to the moon I thought for sure my compression would be garbage was plesently surprised so I too put on a standalone Haltech and haven't looked back probably will need a rebuild in a year or two but it's still the original engine!

andrew miller bro my motor has seen 3 different bodies and now running the haltech sprint re its been a blast, I'm waiting to see when I let's go to rebuild it but she's taking daily and track abuse happily *knock on wood* (it's been almost 3 years on this block with unknown mileage)

Honestly it baffles me how people still think the rotary is fragile. They're used in light aircraft, a use that requires high reliability. If they blew up at the drop of a hat no one would fly with them.

Or how about you google Wankel engine aircraft instead of rudely assuming I don't know what a classic rotary aircraft engine is? The 13B has been pretty popular in both custom aircraft and as a replacement for small piston engines in existing aircraft. Plus there are several companies who produce Wankel engines specifically for aircraft use.

No I'm not, I have physically seen a wankel engine bolted to the engine carrier of a small aircraft, and you can find pictures of them on google. There are several companies that make them specifically for aircraft use, and the 13B is in use both for custom aircraft, and as a replacement for small piston engines on commercially produced small aircraft.

Ben Klassen that is probably the reason why they did it. Who needs a 5 five cylinder crafted to perfection by the geniuses at Volvo gothenburg (like the Focus RS mk2 had) when you can have a sh*t heep fore cylinder and slap on some flex tape, to stop the bloody thing from leaking. Flex tape a gift from God him self.

I have a 12A Rotary Engine and is very reliable. Used for tracks and streets, have over 20 years and run great. I changed all seal two time, normal maintenance, in the first engine open I make bridge ports, have Delortho carb, and another thing's make 180hp. Always have a oil quart in the back seat. Very soon to swap for 13B, because is very hard to find part for 12A and save the original engine.

I'll say it again. My extend port 13bt was by far without a doubt the most reliable engine in the history of all my automotive experience! Only requiring mild maintenance and an oil check/top up once a fortnight/month depending on use

1 Rotary for 10 years is amazing. My drag car went thru 1 4.6 2v V8, 1 4..6 4v V8, 1 6.8l 3v V10, and is now on its 4th motor which is a 868CI BBF stroker (3 weeks before it finished). Might be looking at a Rotary in the future lol

Reality: Insane boost goes in. Rob overrides the ECU when it complaints about insufficient fuel pressure because MOAR HORSEPOWARZ!!!!111. Engine leans out at high boost leading to detonation again leading to cracked irons. The obvious conclusion here is of cause that rotaries are fragile.... :P

Anders Juel Jensen I was so sad when that happened, even as he was saying what he was gonna do I knew it'd be the last run.. :( Luckily it looks like it was in desperate need of a rebuild anyway :D Can't wait to see Rob and Abel get this monster running again, (with moar fuel pump! :P)

Rob started the 4 rotor project in December of 2015. It is now June, 2018 and the car is still not even close to done. Rob has had most of the engine parts since the startand he said himself he should have started the project in May 2015. Rob says now he has all the parts and just has to put it together. It will be another 2 years before he even cranks the 4 rotor to tune it

Hey, hey, Rob. If LiquidPiston get to market their HEHC rotary engines, are you gonna look at some? One moving part which is the rotor and crankshaft. 16k rpm redline. 0.5 hp/lb, and 5 hp in 70cc. I can only imagine what they'd get them up to at like a 300cc rotor or a 600cc rotor. Stack 3 rotors together for a very powerful and mechanically simple engine. I think you could even put boost in the engine just fine too. Can't wait for the government contracts to finish up and for them to go to market with a government seal of approval on their name :)

Tell that to a rx-8 owner lol. Unless you're a rotary enthusiast, there is a lot that goes in to maintaining a rotary engine. I love it for its uniqueness and the sound but maintaining one can be pure hell.

RX8 owner here, bought it a year ago with 84,000 miles. Its at 88,600 now and all I've had to do is keep the oil topped off and swap out a brake booster. Still starts without hesitation both hot and cold.

He abused the shit out of the engine for a few years. I've treated mine with loving care. 240,000mi and climbing. Rotary engines are for racing which puts tons of wear and tear on an engine. When the 4 rotor won lemans, it was due to its reliability as it spent less time in the pit than most engines as the rotor isn't constantly trying to kill itself like a v8 is at high revs. Mazda recommends doing high revs to clear it..."sorry officer, was doing maintenance around that corner"

I hate seeing the rx7 in any sort of bad condition. Over the years ive watched this channel I've grown emotionally attached to a car ive never seen in person and i almost cried seeing how rough the rx7 was in this video. And to be honest, I'm starting to think the 3 rotor sounds better than the 4 rotor

it's probably also not good for the engine if people drive it like an old diesel truck, not really going above 3k RPM. I'm pretty sure most of the RX-8 owners in my area bought it because of the looks, and they might not even know that it has an unusual engine. I get the feeling they don't premix the fuel

A properly maintained rotary doesn't need pre-mix because it has oil injectors already. I don't use it and my '94 FD engine is almost 25 years old. Modified rotary? Well, all bets are off, so I can see the use for it in some cases.

A first gen RX-8 is one of my attainable dream cars, mainly because of the engine, so I'm always happy to get new information about maintenance. There were so many sites and videos talking about premix fuel, and they mostly said it's good for the engine, didn't know about the oil injectors.

All rotary engines have oil injectors, and that's why people complain about them "burning oil." Two-stroke engines like those on some dirt bikes and outboard marine engines also inject oil into the fuel system, however, it's not too uncommon for them to fail on the rotary engines, so in that case it's not a horrible idea to premix (hence my comment about the engine being properly maintained). Generally put, if your rotary engine isn't using oil, then there's something wrong with the injection system, so you better use premix.

Rob you will need to replace those rotors, perform rotor side clearance on the new ones and add a lot of dowel pins or a stud kit to the engine plates for durability. Only thing I can say is rotary engine’s are rubbish so many of mate’s here in oz spend thousands more then 30 k or so to build a engine and they never have time to drive them because there broken in some way .but wow very surprised how your engine looked those housing look glazed the coating is wearing out and nice dent on that rota itself
