I haven't watched this yet, but one thing the Mogstaion has over other MMOs cashshops are the fact it's advertised once in the launcher, and that's it. No in-game shop or way to interact with it.
I strongly agree, I hadn't considered that. You get attacked with screens in other games so much. I stopped playing ESO for this reason. I think FF14 Mogstation is an example of a good cash shop.
@@MattTheBat27 If you're on PC there are certain grey-area programs like the screenshot tool on the Crystaline Means discord that lets you try on any gear, race, hair or gender on your character (completely client side so this won't show to anyone else) I use it to preview stuff for the last year.

Most of the "good stuff" looks badass and cool, but I prefer cutesy items and they're mostly cash shop exclusive. I've looked into a lot of base game stuff and is getting all I can get my hands on but wish I'm not stopped by my wallet.
LunaUsagi I also love to play dress-up in XIV xD I tend to gravitate towards the in-game sets for battle and MSQ and stuff, but I still like to buy Mog station sets because of accent pieces for my glams, and I use the sets a lot for hanging out with friends, or screenshots, things that aren’t battle content! But yeah a lot of the cutesy stuff is level 1 glam-specific items from the Mog station or on the MB

I will always be against the cash shop. *Logs Into Mogstation* Everything is too expensive, just for simple cosmetic changes *adds 10 pure white dye to cart* Who in their right mind would pay for things like these? *adds 3 emotes and an outfit to cart* Besides you can get better stuff, that you will use more of - in game. *adds a minion to cart* And don't even get me started on the soundtracks. Like $80 for a minion! *buys soundtrack, and clicks pay now* But damn do I feel good afterwards.
Same i'd never waste money on the store. Except for the songbird emotes aaand the dye.. and carbuncle slippers.. and 1 to gift to a friend. But other than that i'll never touch it
I just finished ARR and during my first hard raid I met someone who then made me the gear I needed and some free gil to get me going. So it's community-to-win in FFXIV
There are some cool people in the game that's for sure, while i haven't gone so far as to give sprout players gear or money, whenever i see one out in the fields struggling to do a fate or kill something, i do join and heal em and help them take out whatever it is they're fighting.
Shamar Porter I have so much extra materials for high end crafting gear, and I spend time just sort of looking through people’s gear and getting autistically bothered when they have a bunch of high level gear and one garbage item, so I jsut walk up to them and give them a piece of HQ high end gear to replace it
I think some people just innately think of pay to win as the opposite of free to play when, generally, the two go hand in hand. Expansions are pay to play, not pay to win.
It depends. There are definitely ways that expansions can make the game P2W. For example, allowing players who have bought the expansion, have the better gear and skills from it and higher level from it compete in PVP against those who don't have any of that and therefore, cannot output nearly as much.
@@boredfangerrude That's a good point, but it also raises the question of "What would you rather have, more people in PvP even if some have a higher level cap and/or Better Gear." or a split community, or I guess some kinda system that tries to average out GS/Level. I'm not sure what the answer is to that question.

Anybody who says FFXIV is P2W just wants an excuse to hate FFXIV. I have played so many P2W MMORPGS, and I have to say that FFXIV is one of the best games when it comes to player progression and making everything balanced for everybody.
i agree, there is not a single cash shop item tgat would give you an advantage. its purely cosmetic and a bit quality of life for those that want to skip(!) stuff. no p2w in FF14
Glamour is the endgame, and mount collecting. Makes me really sad whenever I see a cool mount only to know that there's no way to collect it, aside form getting a raise I guess.
it's important to note that there is a lot of feeling that, psychologically, cosmetic items are far less optional than game companies make out. For example, if you make your game so the base skins are all awful but the paid skins are super cool, then all the players who see the super cool skins feel like they're getting much less from the game due to their base skin and are far more likely to feel pressured into paying. Thankfully, FFXIV does a really good job giving players tons of options for those cosmetics things like minions, mounts, glamours and thus none of the paid cosmetics feel so far ahead of in-game items that people feel they're missing out.
@Justin B Event stuff eventually end up in the cashshop after a year or so. So they are incentives to either get people to buy a 1month sub just to do the event or wait a year and buy all the event items. So it's pretty understandable that their quality will be on par with the cashshop regular creations
Yeah I’ve never felt like, pressured to buy something. I buy the Mog station sets because they are cute, and I want them, but even when I can’t get the new ones for months like the Peacock one that just came out, I still want it, but I don’t feel like my character is at some sort of loss without it! It would be nice to have, but I also have a million glams using in-game set pieces, so it’s not like I look terrible just because I couldn’t get the cash shop gear
The thing I appreciate about XIV's cash shop over those of other MMOs is that they don't have it in game. It's not really shoved in your face much like it is in the others. You could theoretically play the game without ever finding out about the cash shop.
Also that you don't have to buy their currency to do anything if you do use the cash shop. That is really messed up because no game has the amount you need, it's either not enough or way too much and you'll have leftovers but not enough to buy anything else.
If it wasn't for me spotting the fatter cat mount in game, most likely I would never have known about it. Only found out about mog station after I asked my buddies how I could get fatter cat.
This is my only reason I’m ok with it, for me it’s almost like buying an art commission fir my character. If it was the only cool looking stuff then that’s lame but it’s not so it’s fine by me.
When I talk about FFXIV with people, sometimes someone will say "I'll probably play it when it goes free-to-play". And my response is usually "And I'll probably stop playing it when it goes free-to-play".
The “free to play” mentality is just ridiculous. Most f2p games shove in game paid content down your throats anyway and you can’t do much without buying like a battle pass or boosts. People really be forgetting that good contents require hard work from people who needs to be paid
@@tonymatthews2051 I mean, when you're done with the game you can just unsub. Honestly that's what most people who don't play the game on the regular do. They sub up, play to the end of the story, unsub until the next expansion comes out. Rinse and repeat.
I will say to be fair to the Hearthsteed it was earned by playing hearthstone and no purchase required which is why it may of been better received. As far as the other mounts, as someone who recently stopped playing WoW like two weeks ago, the main thing we were mad at is that the store has these luscious mounts that are beautiful, amazing, and glorious. While the game only gets reskinned wolves and horses consistently.
I actually LOVE the fact that mog station items are not *that* great. And that you actually have to work your ass off to get the best mounts and best glams in the game. Its one of the points that sold me and made me drop ESO and come to XIV.

last time i played Wow, i get anxiety and i get bored fast, is so annoying all is pvp, toxic ppl, boring world (when youre lvling feels SO empty world, maybe because the Wow world is GIGANTIC and now you can lvling in the expansion you want) bad feeling when i played it, the corruption, bad energy, demons everywhere. Its just too much negativity. Now im playing ffxiv and is a dream. I love it.
@@AuralTv7 it does ultimately come down to personal preference but for me, id disagree. WoW has a great option for PvP and ffxiv pretty much has almost none. having the option is great even if it is a content you don't enjoy. toxic people exists in all games and ffxiv is no exception. you can argue WoW is "more" toxic but in the end, they are all the same people who play online games, no difference. First play through of leveling in both games can be a good experience since you are experiencing the lore of the game for the first time but both can be very boring. im assuming you havent tried leveling alts in ffxiv but it's lot worse of an experience than WoW imo. It might feel empty because the world is bigger which I dont necessarily view as a bad thing. "bad feeling when i played it, the corruption, bad energy, demons everywhere. Its just too much negativity" im not sure what you are trying to say here but if you've read the story, ffxiv is no less "depressing" than WoW world.
Now I want a Tifa mount. Think about it. She tosses you up on her shoulders, runs around like Luke training with Yoda, and throws you like a sack of potatoes when you dismount.
Leveling is a major goal in any RPG. Level boosts are definitively Pay to Win. You can call it "pay to progress" but that doesn't make it any better. It is selling advancement that you would normally have to play the game to obtain. Though not Pay to Win, intentionally filling up your inventory and then selling inventory space is an earmark of Free to Play games. SE sells both additional retainers and expanded chocobo bag space, and worse than most free to play games it's subscription based. And this game defiantly pushes you towards needing more inventory. Omni-crafting with only the main retainers requires major inventory gymnastics. 200 spaces in the glamour dresser is nothing in this game where you have 30 different classes/Jobs, all with unique outfit items. If you think you might want to use old raid gear and don't have the space in your glamour dresser you end up saving the myriad of raiding currencies in you inventory so you can purchase stuff later. And the retainer system is just stupid, having to summon individual npcs to access segments of your inventory? They should implement a collection based glamour system like RIFT where once you obtain an item you have the style forever. There should be crafting inventory like GW2, among others. And currencies should not be inventory items, put them in the currency window. (in b4 "spaghetti code")
Finally someone actually gets it and isn't being blindly apologetic to Square Enix. I don't personally care that much about the Level Boost features, but I know a lot of people are frequently bothered by Boosted players who have no clue how to play the game. What you're saying about the inventory space is spot on. Square Enix are not saints on this matter at all. Just because there's worse examples out there doesn't put SE in the clear. There is a clear and persistent incentive for Square Enix to give players less convenient storage, because they're making money off the monthly fees of Extra Retainers. An extra monthly inventory fee on top of a monthly subscription fee is actually a predatory business practice. Especially when taking into consideration how much this game revolves around inventory space for glamours, crafting, armor sets, etc. All stored on a single character.
The play dead emote allows me to wordlessly express my frustration in trying to keep my party alive despite the DPS making friends with every AoE and the main tank compulsively collecting vuln stacks. So I'd say it's pretty good.
Honestly if they’d sell an item that would lower my Rescue cooldown to 10 seconds, I’d pay sooo much for it. Just to move people to safety more often...
What are you healing? I run alot of dungeons and have done every one and you may have the odd wipe here and there but overall its easy and everything runs completely how it should. Have you ever considered it may be your fault?
Shaun Conway I’ll say this watch if your tank is using their cool downs properly, standing in all the aoes, and if the dps are doing their jobs. The tank only gets more squishy over time the slower the group is killing stuff
When I first started playing ffxiv, I remember everything was account wide including Fantasia, so their change to account wide items is definitely not good. However, other than that I would say the cash shop is ok as it is compared to other mmos and games.
I haven’t been on the FF14 cash shop in about 6 months. Never purchased a single item. I feel I don’t need too and have enough content to deal with. The game is endless content. $12 dollar sub a month, I get my money’s worth.
That might be true, but comparatively better doesn't = good. I mean if you has to eat stale bread with shit on it for a month but then after just got stale bread without shit, sure it's better but it's still not good....
My thoughts before watching: - There's no link to the Mogstatation in the game itself. There's a link to it in the launcher, but they don't shove it in your face in-game. - There are level and story skips, but those are just to catch up on alts. They don't get you to the level cap or give you the best gear, just up to the newest expansion's starting point. - As someone who HATES in-game microtransactions with a PASSION, I have NO objections to the game's cash shop. My thoughts after watching: - I'd even argue that more retainers don't mean more gold unless you play a LOT of Crafting/Gathering, as I've never even filled up a single retainer on items to sell out of my two free ones. So it's still not pay to win since you're still earning the gil through the game's mechanics, and it just allows more slots if you want to go hard on it. There's zero advantage if your gameplay doesn't support it. - At least Account Wide stuff is there for the people with alts. I know many people with characters across multiple datacenters to play with friends, especially after the DC split of 2019. I agree that it would be more fair to make it all account wide, outfits included, but that higher price has dissuaded some people I know from taking the plunge so maybe that was the intent; they want you to buy stuff if you REALLY want it, they don't want it to be a compulsion. A middle ground could be to make two versions of everything, single and account wide. Still, I have to say I appreciate the unbiased approach. Despite your love for the game you took your time to play Devil's advocate and look at things critically. Respect!
about the retainer stuff, if you are willing to put in the effort to manage your 2 free retainers to their max, to a point where a third retainer would make a difference, you didn't even need the third in the first place lol. It's so much work to make the most out of a retainer. And in the end gil translates to what? glamour I guess. Cause the max ilvl crafted gear is heaps behind raid and tomestones gear.
To me, the issue with retainers isn't how much you're able to sell if you literally and constantly max out all your retainers' 20 items for sale, it's the extra 175 inventory slots PER retainer. Players have been saying how limiting inventory can be for years and it's only gotten marginally better, and so you can get up to an extra 1400 inventory slots if you just add real money onto your sub per month. That's more than your glam dresser, existing retainers, and personal inventories can hold COMBINED and I think is absolutely a problematic example of selling a solution to a problem. Is it enough to ruin my enjoyment of the game? No, but it's easily the worst microtransaction on offer.
One thing that I WILL say is that mogstation items should definitely be account-wide. Fully agree that the "only some things are account-wide (and those things we get to price much higher)" is a dangerous move.
@ Agreed. Im in the UK and I haven't bought any of the mounts I like because it feels like im being ripped off. I could use that money to get a full game or even DLC for the other ones I play
Because of how much I appreciate FFXIV's business model and their hard work at appealing to the community and actually listening to us, that I don't ever feel remotely bad about spending money on the cash shop. Usually in other games I feel this tug of emotion between getting what I want and this feeling of "hah, we gotcha!" But not with FFXIV. I feel as if I'm helping make the game I love better by contributing beyond my subscription.
I'm starting to think this too tbh. Like, I've been looking at other MMOs to see what else is out there, and I'm realizing that it's not just that I enjoy FFXIV so much, but that other MMOs don't necessarily have the same stance on prioritizing player enjoyment and providing value for money. ESO for example - tying the unlimited crafting bag to ESO+ makes me feel like while it does provide other benefits, it pushes me towards subbing vs just playing without it. I like that FFXIV is so upfront with the costs. Buy game (+ expansions), pay sub, and that's what you need. The Mog Station feels more cosmetic or "if you want" than something that's pushed at you.
I do feel bad about it. Cash shops shouldn't be a thing at all. They are an incentive to hold back content and features behind an extra paywall. People seem to forget that Square Enix is charging a monthly subscription fee on top of the money they make on the cash shop. You're being too apologetic. I think that if people weren't as willing to throw money on overpriced cash shops, today's MMOs would be better.

The existence of the "extra retainer service" is for example a clear incentive not to give players enough inventory space. Because that would make it much less attractive to buy more retainers for an extra monthly fee. This is probably why the Armoire is such a lacking feature.

Haha, if anything, buying level skips from cash shop provides "unfair" disadvantages to random party members LOL. (only when ppl go into the latest dungeons without going through some tutorial first) Personally I want to spend the minimum outside of subs and expacs, but I don't really see the cash shop as some horrible p2w thing. Well said often it hast to be compared how much and for how long something offers ,something. Cause FFxiv has teh most content in expansions as far as i expierenced it.
Yeah, it's not like they buy the expansion and boom they are at endgame. Such a dumb view. There is no reasonable justification for having thoughts like that. People who pay get access to more content, and? That is what they get for paying. They don't automatically win. They just get their money's worth. Imagine being such an entitled brat that you think the company owes you free content. Like...leave. Better yet, leave, learn to program and develop games, learn the ins and outs of it, make your own game and tell me just how much you want everything in it to be free. You won't even release the game without putting money into it.

Well, for the competitive side of ff14 we have the PVP where the gear doesn't matter at all (so no way to "pay to win") and the race for world first in Savage/Ultimate raids where the only advantage "could" be to have lots of gold to buy a fully penta-melded set as soon as the patch come out. (and it is not even the case for Ultimate since the BiS for Ultimate come frome the ongoing savage raid tier). But even that is dubious. If you don't have the skill to participate in the race for world first, lots of gold won't save you.
First off I'd say that FFXIV is the least predatory modern MMO that I'm aware of. Now that said, it's not perfect. It's so close to doing things nearly perfect that it's frustrating that it misses the mark. I'm of the opinion that if a game is pay to purchase, and if it's online and has a monthly fee, then everything normally available (besides expansions and special events) should be earnable in-game and not purchaseable. But to be close to perfect everything non-cosmetic should be earnable in-game and not purchaseable. FFXIV doesn't quite hit either of these marks. Retainers, multi-person mounts, and that one mount that gives you a speed boost all affect gameplay. As well as some other things I'm forgetting at the moment. Fairly minor in most cases and usually able to be worked around? Absolutely. But that they exist frustratingly moves the game out of the close to perfect category and into the nearly close to perfect category in my admittedly strict, but fair I think, requirements. If it didn't have those few things it has it could at least be truly defined as cosmetic only instead of just almost there. In a perfect world I think I'd want the FFXIV cash shop to be solely made of items from past events that are solely cosmetic and no longer earnable in-game. That way everyone would have a fair chance at everything currently available and even purchased items one would never know if the person using it earned it or just threw out some cash to look prettier than me. It really sucks seeing someone wearing or riding something awesome only to find out all they did was shell out cash for it. Besides the other risks you mentioned this also runs the risk of FFXIV holding out it's most desirable cosmetic items for its cash shop. I'm not saying they're doing that, necessarily... But it's one more thing to be wary of with the current system.
You mention Glamour Dresser and I'm here PRAYING we got more space (hopefully in 5.3), managing glam space between the Dresser and Retainers is so difficult 😭
Glamour dresser space ? hell yeah, but need the possibility to choose multiple weapon glam ! I like to make a glam for a specific role, i.e tanks, but having to glamour the weapon myself is freaking tedious !
I only have like 70-80 ish items in my glamour dresser, i got a few glamour plates that look good. How about more armoury inventory space, how about the problem of "well, each job requires 2 rings and only having limited spaces so if you got every job leveled they'll each have their own 2 rings"
I just wish there were more two-seater mounts that were more accessible in-game. I had to buy a whale to be able to ride around together with my gf's character. That said, I frikking love my whale.
Anyone saying that the Mog Station in FFXIV is pay-to-win needs to take a look at other games such as S4 League, Elder Scrolls Online, Black Desert Online and Blade & Soul to get a better perspective of what 'pay-to-win' actually means. Don't even get me started on the level booster or retainers; the booster only goes as high as the previous expansion unlike other MMOs (looking at you, WoW) and the Retainers are entirely optional and not necessary-- this coming from an omni-crafter. You don't need to save every piece of gear and every single material you come across.
Yeah you only need extra retainers if you’re a glam hoarder like me Dx even so I haven’t even bought another retainer, I just make do with the ones I have... but if they don’t add more glam dresser space in 5.3 I might get one cause I spent too much time farming some of the stuff I have in my retainers to just sell it lol
One of my favorite things about the cash shop in FFXIV is that it isn't in the game. Unlike other MMOs I actually have to go outside the game to buy stuff.
The fact Square add stuff fortnightly/monthly to the cash shop is as in your face as having it outside the game. Watching content creators and even following the game you will see them advertising new stuff regularly and doing this is just as bad as showing a mount or cosmetic that's only a limited time offer.

Also the fact that you can play this game for free up to level 60 and complete the entire ARR expansion without any time limit and they wont even allow you to buy anything from the shop should prove your dumbass theory wrong. As someone who has a single character in FFXIV, it was weird to see all of the 'account-wide' options available and not be able to pay a lesser amount for a 'single character' variant of them. As soon as I realized that, I skipped over all of them when looking through the different categories. Overall I don't mind Cash Shops that deal in aesthetics mostly/only, because I see it as a means for the developers to have a creative outlet that can still turn into a profit for the company as a whole. The level/story skips I wouldn't consider 'pay to win' per se, but I can see the argument being made that 'oh I skipped 3 expansions and 70 levels while you spent 2 months doing the same thing, so I win'. I would just laugh at that argument and say "I got a better understanding of the story and game play for less money, so I Saved to Win'
Yeah, the level/story skips aren't pay to win, it's more like "pay to be slightly less behind". it's like being in 8th place in Mario Kart and getting that Golden Mushroom. You won't get to first place with just it. But you'll at least be getting a really fast boost to get to lvl 80
Previous event rewards getting put into the Mogstation is dumb. The dyes and cosmetics and other premium/special items should be in the game, they are taken out and then sold separately. (Premium marriage, mounts, minions) Would be nice to have a bank instead of extra retainers. Not just in 14, but in all MMO's, name changes, appearance changes and server changes should not cost money, there could be a limitation of once a month maybe instead.
Speaking on the account wide issue, you're right. Most people DO tend to have one character so charging more for account wide is a bit....hm. MAINLY because they either make a mount single character or account wide. There's no option. You can't choose. :/ But also, account wide should have been the default to begin with. But overall, I'm ok with the cash shop I just feel like the prices are a bit high. I don't usually buy anything because of that, even though I'd be happy to support the game more. But I just can't justify $18 on a shirt, shorts and shoes. You know? I would buy it in a heart beat if it were $10. Emotes being $7 is way too much imo as well; I'd prefer the $4.90 we get on sale. And housing items? Dont even get me started. No event housing items should ever go on the mogstation imo because people find such creative ways to use them - like the snowmen that people used as lighting fixtures. You'd want like 30 of those, but no way would you pay for that. So if you didn't buy a million during the event, you just miss out and that's unfortunate. It makes me buy tons of event furnishings just in case I have a cool idea later on. But that's another issue because they don't stack in storage.... it makes me want to rip my hair out.

Yes, ESO is overly aggressive with selling cosmetics. Exchanging crowns to gold in ESO is not an in-game feature though. That's a low blow. I normally like your videos, but I am disliking this one.
Realistically SE _could_ be taking profit from story/level skips into account when making design decisions. But we would need explicit proof. Other companies have been exposed like Assassins Creed Odyssey where they tried to curtail effective xp grind in a SINGLE PLAYER game where they also tried selling xp boosters for real money. About the account wide stuff their reason is that the game architecture is very bloated at this point (there are a finite amount of flags to attribute to items) and they are trying to be conservative in using them.
Serious comment though, I absolutely consider glamour as my end game, and really wish that I can farm all the glamours without paying real money. It's really unfair and frustrating when I spent days farming the Ruby Tide dungeon for the Shisui Joi set then someone show off the same set but better that they bought with real money. :'(
You won't get many likes but I agree. FFXIV is still one of, if not the best, big MMOs in this regard. But combat is very much not the sole reason to play this game or even the main reason for a number of people, so even non-combat cash shop purchases are frustrating.
You mean the one from Moonfire Faire years back? The Mog station one was previously an event item, and also its different from all the Shisui ones anyway. I farmed all the Shisui tops despite having the Moonfire one because, in my eyes, they are very different in the details and I liked the Shisui ones better for what I wanted for my glams. It’s quite possibly the only gear on the Mog station that’s a redesign of dungeon gear, and it came out (I think) the same summer SB did so after the Shisui gear, not before.
LunaUsagi I don’t think, for a lot of people, the cash shop gear is “superior.” Glamour is, truly, my endgame, but I’ve never felt like the in-game gear wasn’t good enough. I have plenty of Mog station items, because I enjoy the variety, but all my main goals are using in-game assets, and I don’t begrudge people who get the newest Mog station glams, cause I can save up and get them someday too! Everyone has a chance because they aren’t limited. But even if glam is your endgame like it’s mine, a player isn’t better than you because they have Mog station items, if anything it makes them more basic because *everyone* wears new items when they come out xD
I really dislike the cash shop, it's overpriced and I don't like a game having subs and cash shop. however it is far from the worst one around so I can't complain too much.

FF14 has a level boost, does it not? That alone is P2W. Literally. P2W is when you can spend real money to gain advantage over another player. You can't just limit it down to top-end raiders and pretend that deleting 99% of the game allows you to say "This game isn't P2W cause the biggest niche of the game can get better character stats than you can buy." lmao. That's why this video took 17 and a half minutes. It was entirely you rationalizing why buying an advantage isn't P2W because if you grind you can find better stats. You find theories posted by randos and generalize anyone that disagrees with you as being "excited to label anything P2W" yet this is a YOU problem. You're taking P2W like it's an insult and getting defensive as if YOU have been personally insulted. Almost every MMO these days has P2W. It is normal these days. I've never seen someone get so defensive over the notion before. You cannot state FF14 is not P2W just because other games are "more P2W". You cannot state FF14 is not P2W just because "Players like the game." I don't claim to know you and won't make assumptions on why you did this, but you may want to investigate a potentially unhealthy relationship between you and this game if you feel the need to act like this. It's like watching an addict justifying the price they pay for their fix is actually beneficial.
my biggerst gripe with mogstation mounts was multi-person mounts for the longest time being heavily gated, either buy from the cash shop, recruit a friend or marriage, and event, now we can get one in normal content at least
I'm an RPer so I have a main on Aether and an RP character on Crystal. I own a couple glamours on my main and the fact that they're character specific (don't get me started on gender specific) just really irritates me. I miss WoW's transmog system so much!
You have a collection system that if you pick up something that can be worn by your class and armor type match, it’s automatically added to the collection. No need to store it and you can vendor/disenchant it. The appearance is then able to be used on all class who can use that weapon/armor type account wide.
I agree the account wide stuff shouldn't cost more, if you pay for something it should be by default account wide (Or simple fix, have Account wide version, for those who play on multiple server with multiple groups, and a Single Character version of all items.) Cash shops and Micro transactions have ruined so many great MMOs, but this one I believe it to be well done. As for the exclusivity of mounts and minions There are sooo many different types of mounts, and minions based on content that can be received through hard work, that the ones in the shop are a nice little add-on to show your support. As long as they keep prioritizing the game content vs their shop content. I think it's okay. As for Game Time bought with in-game currency, as long as it's non-trade-able and can only be purchased at a very specific END-GAME NPC, (As a reward for playing that far...) And can only be purchased once every 4 months (2 Months you pay, 2 Months are free, max 2 Purchased a year) to avoid abuse, I think it would be a great reward for the Dedicated players of the game. Well that's my opinion on the matter. :)
Honestly, I have a bigger problem with anything that isn't account wide because I play alts. I pretty much won't buy the Single Character Only Mounts. I also get more of the feeling, the single character only is discounted, as opposed to the Account-Wide is price hiked. Also I wish most of the equipment (or Mog Station in-game items) just unlocked the gear to purchase with gil on the Calamity Salvagers across your account. That'd be nice.
What rubs me the wrong way is paying a subscription on top of a subscription, not only the retainers but also the companion app has a premium sub which is ridiculous. I don't pay for extra retainers but if it where a one time payment even if its like 15 dollars I would most likely had acquired some by now. Sqex is lucky that its competitor are bethesda, activision and whatever owns BDO, all shitty companies ready to shear their customers.

it's not predatory or aggressive at all. At no point do you HAVE to purchase ANYTHING from it. Be an adult, use your head. At no point as an SE employee come into my home and held me at gunpoint to buy anything from it. Ive never purchased a thing from it. I pay my sub when Im actively playing and that's it. This applies to more than just FFXIV shop, but to all games with additional content that isn't required: Be an adult. you dont have to buy anything if you dont want to. Simple.
For me the Cash-Shop in FFXIV is absolutely optional! There is literally nothing in it you "need" or have something "better" than players who don't pay for stuff in it. I didn't even know that a shop existed for ne first 2 years of playing xD and i didn't miss a thing ^^
Glamour is end game. I wish store outfits were account wide. It's very annoying... especially seasonal stuff I missed. I am an altaholic. My main is all 80's, I've just levelled another server character to 70 in all DoH and DoL and a single job... I have 8/8 characters on my home server. Avoids fantasia addiction but gosh does it make me annoyed at seasonal items being sold :D
Buying crowns to sell them to buy equipment is quite stupid in eso. 1st)sets are easily obtainable. To get most of sets that are good for pvp u will spend less time to get than getting gold through that to obtain... 2nd) monster sets and unique cannot be bought with gold. 3rd) there is no level skips and such. Most people who sell crowns use gold to get ... furniture... and such....it takes about 5 hours to prep character lvl 1 to be pvp ready for low lvl and that character will kill most people who dont prep for pvp even if it's like lvl 3000...
In an interview once they explained that they're actually running out of primary keys (unique identifier slots) for account-wide items, which is a pretty awkward manifestation of the ol technical debt. Reading between the lines, they may only be able to make a max of 256 such items? For the same basic reasons that a lot of old rpgs have stats that cap at 255. So they need to be extra selective about it at this point. My only semi-gripe with the cash shop is more a gripe about the Gold Saucer shop. It's a little weird to see glams and haircuts added to the cash shop all the time, yet we only rarely see additions to the Gold Saucer rewards. In fact, I don't think there have been any added in the past... year and a half? And that might have just been the 2 million MGP mount. So I have this feeling of "maybe they should take some of the effort they're using on cash shop items and use it to add new Saucer reward glams", or something.
Maybe they shouldn't have designed the game on a C64? Seriously if any number in a game created this century is limited to 8-bits you have a case of gross incompetence.
Stop talking shit, you don't even know what a primary key is. It represents a slot in the database. They can have as many as they buy. ff14 is a sub based game, you pay the sub for them to upgrade the servers to support you. Kinda fucked they don't just invest more in servers.
i think, each and every time in that store that you'll only have to buy once, should be available to give you the *option* to pay more for account wide purchase or not. those who only play one character will be fine with a lower price. those who play alts will pay more to have that access across the board.

I like all of your points. I think that this game is far from being pay-to-win at least in it's current state. I think the cash shop gives you an nice opportunity to give further support (optional) to the development team and the game if you enjoy it which is fair. As you said you don't need anything that they sell. I'd like to mainly respond to that last point you said. I think their could be an argument about having more economical pricings in the cash shop (lower amounts I mean) overall and making everything account wide. I think, at least in it's current state, the character vs account wide system just gives people that option to pay significantly less considering this game let's you play everything on one character and never get more characters anyway. If anything the account wide status becomes more of a "convenience" at least somewhat to me if you decide you want alts because why not or multiple lockouts/etc.
As a ESO player who has had it on 3 systems I can agree with some of the stated issues but I personally have never felt pressure to buy certain things. I also play FF14 quite a bit to.
Just started playing a month and half and the only thing predatory of the cash shop. Is the pricing, man they are high. Other then that loving the game.
Whoa. Please stop bashing Wow. We can enjoy FF without comparison. I love the Hearthsteed that my son won for me playing Hearthstone. Did not purchase. But even if it had been purchased.. special and rare mounts can’t be had by everyone just someone with the luck of the draw with a drop they farmed..not because you worked any harder than anyone else.
except in ESO u can keep playing the game at least if u unsub plus get a bunch of free shit.. u never have to touch the lootbox at all.. and u get all the expansions included. FF14 sub u get only the "privelage to play the game" .. plus 2 bucks per retainer? wow thats some bs
I think you missed one major thing with retainers: they can go out on missions for you and get you mats and gil. So that's real character power for money and that doesn't require much effort as they are just timed missions.
I like how she skipped over the fact that you can pay to level skip and story skip. Yes these are considered pay 2 win. You are paying to win against needing to level like everyone else did. You are paying to win against needing to complete the story like everyone did. Are they the best player, no. Do they know the story, most likely no. But if they are mmorpg savey it won't take them to long to get to 80 and be good with at least 1 job.
SWTOR (At least, as of the last time i played) is/was heavily pay-to-win. There is a specific item you can buy with real money that "allows" you to equip purple gear.
The problem is that sometimes people only have the 1 character. Which is why it's good to have items only for 1 character. The account wide thing is more for people who play on multiple chars who should have extra money to spend considering they're paying the premium already. And thus why the account wide are more expensive. However the point @Undies stands that account wide should have a character only option in case you only have 1 character.
Its not realy bothering me and I am not even interested in the Shop Items but for a MMO at this price range (monthly sub + Expansion buy) cash shop shouldnt be a thing and for me its concerning ppl buy these overpriced Items. At least thats my opinion about the topic.I would be pissed af If I see myself wanting a Item from cash shop and if its not replaceable with a similar or better ingame item.
