The New 52 got me into comics, and I LOVED it, that is until I took a look at what the pre-flashpoint DCU had to offer. After that I felt wronged, cheated out of decades of comic history. Only recently did I realize I wouldn't have known or cared about that history if it weren't for the New 52.
I don't think that's true at all. There are plenty of DC adaptations and you could have theoretically started reading comics as a result of any of them. If you have the inclination to read comics in the first place it's a fairly safe bet you'd have had that thought anyway. I would imagine there are people who credit a lot of things for being their gateway into comics but in truth there has almost always been something else around that could have done the same thing. Maybe you'd have discovered one of the cartoons. Or maybe Arrow or The Flash would have eventually given you the idea. Or maybe the MCU would have made you think about reading Marvel and you'd have decided to try DC after that. It's a counterfactual and we can never know for sure but I see many different ways the same thing may have been accomplished in different circumstances.
Hezekiah Ramirez for years I've seen and enjoyed many comic based movies, tv shows, cartoons, video games etc. And I've been fond of many characters as a result. I would not have started reading comics without new 52 happening.

Nope...New 52 is what got me OUT of comics. It felt like a slap in the face after collecting comics for 25 years. I tried...I bought a bunch of New 52 titles but it just wasn't any good. Once Marvel rebooted, they lost me too. Now I just get back issues and trades. While I'm glad a lot of folks got into comics with this launch (which was their intention), they lost a lot of dedicated fans like me.
Pretty much. It's why I stick to either independent comics, web comics, manga, or universes that stick closely to one plot (ie, JLU, MCU, and other specific shows.) Just feels easier to keep track of a series that way.
That's the best of N52 for me. They finally had a chance to show how badass could Aquaman be, only... well, he doesn't want to. :) But erasing the original Titans from existence... methodically too, that was unforgivable. It's what I appreciated the most from the post-Crisis era, that sense of tradition: Golden Age superheroes (minus the Trilogy) revered. Wally West carrying on as the Flash, even Superman considered him the most experienced in the (then) League, and all the "sidekicks" practically on the same level. :)
Marvel Comics plot checklist: 1. Change the established gender or race and sexual orientation of your heroes as a gimmick to pander to PC culture. Check. 2. Kill the heroes that have been a staple of your brand just so they can piss off a Movie Studio that is completely unrelated to the comic book industry. Check. 3. In an effort to stay relevant and steal the spot light shit all over the entire legacy of your Heroes by making them betray the honor and values they stand for and turn them into villains. Check!!!!!
I Don't think new 52 was all bad, hey man i would have never read swamp thing, wonder woman, flash, animal man, JL dark, aquaman and basically every other character besides batman. Because its so hard to keep up with past continuity like batman pre 52 history took forever for me to finish now rebirth is a much better polish.
You totally nailed it here. I got into comics because of the New 52 and it was great. But it also was so confusing as a new fan. By pure luck the first series I chose (based on my prior experience through movies and tv shows) all seemed to be the "year one" stories of the characters. (Justice League, Teen Titans, Superboy). So imagine how confusing it was to then jump into other titles and have it not be the begginning and some titles like Justice League skipped years after finishing its "year one" story. I caught on pretty quickly but you are right. DC should have just started completely fresh.
I think the New 52 removed too much. I am a Flash fan and they destroyed the flash fam. Jay Garret, Wally West (the Real Wally West), Irey, Jai, Max Mercury, Linda Park all gone! There goes what I read about since a kid in 90's and there went my interest. Moved to Marvel and never looked back. Continuity can be explained in videos for new comic fans hell DC coulda produced them and made a killing off the sales. Removing the continuity removes the story and what made the characters special.
I very much enjoyed new 52, as well I read modern age comics as well and I understood that new 52 was supposed to be a reboot to the DC universe and not have anything of the past.
The New 52 was so bad that it distorted everyone's history and timeline. It was one of Geoff Johns' greatest mistakes towards the direction of DC Comic. It gave too much control and not enough idea of what the DC Universe should have previously looked like. For example, it destroyed Green Arrow's backstory (besides Jeff Lemire's revitalization of the character), created a cockhold Superman, erased potentially great villains (as well as the Batman's rogue galleries), and reconned book out of existence because it didn't meet their expectation or direction. I call this lazy storytelling, especially to their Rebirth line. This is because they are forced to reboot the DC Universe instead of trying to make it work in the first place. The problem with the company is that there is no organization or structure to fit in what should viable or check errors with other people's works. Instead, they keep shoving Batman and Bat related event down our throat which in time will saturate the character's market value. This is due to not having any other viable characters to take on the role of a better peak in interest. If you thought Rebirth was great, get a load of what DC was thinking in hiring Brian Michael Bendis to write Superman and Legion of Superheroes. Hilarious. The Shadow, The Rocketeer, The Mask, Spawn, Darkman, Mystery Men, The Phantom, The Mask of Zorro, Steel... That's most of the major ones. X-Men and Blade are both technically in there too. I'm honestly glad they took away Superman's Red Piece. Can't take my favorite character that serious lol. Besides it's just a piece of clothing. What makes Superman a character is not clothes it's his Symbolism & Personality alongside with his Iconic Logo.
In order to evaluate the New 52 on a fair basis, I would seperate legacy/lore from stories themselves. Because while throwing away all the history of the characters and the universe was incredibally bad, there was actually a fair amount of Not only good or even great stories: Snyder's Batman, John's Green Lantern, Justice League, Azzarello's Wonder Woman, the first half of Swamp Thing, Aquaman, ... Yes, there were weak books out there but so are there weak Rebirth titles (Cyborg (!), Justice League has good art but is otherwise quite bland) I think Rebirth is an improvement but mainly due to the way DC is handling its universe and legacy.
Well jonjonboi is actually someone that knows the realistic way that things work like myself and many other real believers do. The WB scum have no idea following the Marvel part that will never catch up. They started successful and are still going strong. We need to focus on what our universe is best at. Keeping the current universe dark. That's our part, we'll never catch up to their current success.
Seriously, how can you like that. That's for old school normal Superman. I really prefer the different New 52 Kryptonian suit that is way more loved by Cavill. That I definitely know he is wearing in the next few movies. I read on the Internet if he preferred to wear the suit with the red tights on the outside or the New 52 version and he said that he would rather stick to the same New 52 that he's used to.
Everyone in person told me to NOT read New 52 and just read Rebirth, but I have read Batman and Flash and its not that bad. I think those who are previous readers or those who have been fans Pre-Flashpoint, its disappointing and not what they wanted. So pretty bad. But as new readers like me who just got into comics last year, its a good start and not that bad.
"Forever Evil" and it's tie-ins will always be my favorite story ever written. Plus, compare Geoff Johns' Justice League to the series in Rebirth. It's clear which one is better.
I think the New 52 Batman run was one of the best runs Batman has had, Scott Snider never made a wrong step and made some of the best story's in batman history: Court of the owls, City of the owls, Death of the family, Endgame. Zero year and the list goes on, and don't forget Greg Capullo's amazing art work. So like I said, One of the best runs Batman has ever had.
I liked the New 52. Batman, Justice League and the Suicide squad were all good. However, Animal Man was my favorite: A family man just trying to do the right thing while maintaining his family together was simply great. I understand that later on in the story it got dark and gruesome. But either way, I don't think Animal man gets the respect he truly deserves. DC still hasn't given this down to earth super hero any respect in Rebirth. They just decided to erase him altogether, which is unfortunate...
New 52 got me to buy comics on the reg since it had a single story to tell, with Pandora and the Box/the different earth thanks to Flashpoint. Some of my favs from this run was Justice a League Dark, Aquaman, Suicide Squad and Green Lantern. I also got into buying from other companies like Image and Dynamite thanks to this run. So I greatly enjoyed the New 52 a great deal.
I haven't read much as I am new to comics but to get into a comics I started with new 52 batman 1 to 7 and thought it was amazing. I loved court of owls, Dark city and End game especially but it is saddening to hear people don't like the new 52 universe as a whole.
Many people including myself really enjoy the New 52. Most of the people who dislike the New 52 don't dislike it because it is actually "bad" but because they love things that where established pre New 52 and ended up disappointing when DC did away with those things.
The biggest flaw in this New 52 was, why titles has to run for 52 issues? Brian Azarello stopped working on Wonder Woman after 35 issues. Geoff John's stopped working on Aquaman after 25 issues, and then who took over to finish these titles stories weren't so great.
As a DC fan all the way from '94 I gotta say that I thought that The New 52 was trash in exception to Justice League but I did like the modern takes on the superhero costumes. Especially Superman's.

I think the New 52 may have played a part in the ruin of the DCEU because just like DC Comics execs at the time, WB & Zack Snyder wanted their films to be "Dark & Realistic". You talk about how skipping 5 years of canon material, while Zack thought it was okay to skip 20 GODDAMN YEARS of Batman. And like you say here 6:31 DC films changed DRASTICALLY after the initial launch of BVS. Directors changed, people at WB got fired, movie lineups changed.
Julio Acceus exactly. They should have copied marvel's approach with the ultimates: keep the classic universe, and run the nu52 side by side to try something different. Use that as the test lab to see what you could do in live action...instead, they went grimdark angst and fucked their whole lineup.
Imo, Batman, Justice League, Brian Azzarelo's run on Wonder Woman, Demon Knights, Francis Manapul's run on The Flash and Scott Snyder's run on Swamp Thing were the highlights of The New 52 (I know that Geoff Johns' runs on Green Lantern and Aquaman were good, but I have yet to read those). Grant Morrison's run on Action Comics wasn't too bad in the beginning, but by the end, it was kinda weird. I would say that The New 52 had good intentions, but I agree with what you said, they should have started with new origins and built up the universe from there. So far from what I've read of Rebirth, I'm not loving it as much as I want; it's okay for the most part, but I expected better from some of the titles I've read.

I was reading all of the Green Lantern books and nothing changed going into the New 52. Everything had been built off the previous story arc. That whole 5 years into a new universe thing didn't seem to count in the Lantern books and I was ok with that. I only stayed with Justice League for about 12 issues. I read all of JLI and was not happy that Booster Gold just kind of went away. I was the one guy reading Static Shock and he was the first to get canned. I got the first issue of Mr. Terrific and it was the most racist book I had ever read. By the end of the whole thing I was only reading Lantern books, which is exactly what I was doing before.
I liked JL,Batman,WW and some of Aquiman but over all looking back I don't like the new 52 much I liked some of the flash and Green Arrow but they fell off a bit and I also hate that they ruined my favourite super hero Superman,Deathroke and Nightwing
Starting at 5 years of backstory isn’t really that bad, as long as it is simple or left for one to wonder what happened in that time. But you still need interesting characters to help start it off.
i'ld always love the New 52 it made the Justice League cool, badass and with their dope looks N52 Superman suit is my favourite till date, Geoff Johns made me love Superman again, i'll be honest i didn't check out all the titles but Scott Snyders run on Batman was badass love the court of owls, Green Lantern was amazing loved the jerky Hal Jordan (love his interacting with Batman in JL). the New 52 made me love comics again just when i was thinking of quitting on it, DC brought me back, i could relate to it's Superman but now his dead and replaced with the old good boy scout (snooze fest) and N52 finally gave Darksied the respect he deserved being a League villain instead of a superman villain plus they added Cyborg to the League not just because his black but also because he represents the 21 century and they pimped him out, the dude became really cool. So yeah like all things in life New52 had it's down sides but it made the super heroes, especially the Justice League( because that was the title i followed to the end) more realistic in looks/character, made me care about them and it gave me hope.
Did DC Comics change Batman so the old continuity was correct or was it completely different continuity Batman? New 52 continuity or something similar to that?
I actually really most of the New 52 titles, sure not all of them were winners, but most of the main character titles were pretty good and it was a good starting point and it helped me get into DC comics and comics in general
Now we know thanks to doomsday clock why the New 52 was darker. And why there was no JSA or anything related to them when flash failed to reset the DC universe into it's good ol DC multiverse
The stuff you listed after giving the Pretty Bad rating is what made The New 52 vital for DC. To add to the list, they firmly established Harley Quinn as a independent character, successfully upgraded Cyborg as a Justice League founder and (while the demand was there for it) gave every Green Lantern fan a book for their favorite version of the character. While the new universe started five years into the storytelling, we did start with origins for Superman in Action Comics and the new Justice League origin.
The four Batman titles, Aquaman, and Swamp Thing were great-they were the only ones I read from the New 52 run. It’s too bad Swamp Thing was cancelled early-I think that was the last best chance for the character to have a successful run in comics.
I had loved what was happening with Superman before Flashpoint. When the New 52 series came out, I got the first issue or two of most of the new series, and just completely lost interest. I stopped collecting DC because of New 52, and I won't be going back. I also stopped collecting Marvel just before the end of Secret Wars III. Just too many changes, reboots, etc. Lost all desire to spend money on comics at that point, and the RU-vidrs who were keeping up with the stories were giving me everything that I needed. What would have kept me interested is continuity. Both majors decided to reboot. So both lost me as a subscriber.
I like the New 52. I certainly wasn't collecting any DC paperbacks until I got a hold of Court of Owls. Then I got to take a look at 52 titles and read Volume Ones, exploring characters with their own book and a modern, updated look. I can't stand superhero undies.
I was 10 when the New 52 launched but I didn't know about it until a few years later. O was just strolling through a ToysRUs and happened to see a comic book with my favorite character, Superman, on the cover in a dope new outfit (which to this day is still my favorite version of Superman). That alone caught my attention and was enough to get me to buy it. I was hooked. For the next year and a half my brother and I were buying issues of our favorite DC characters. At the time I was able to put two-on-two together and I understood that the New 52 was a reboot of the characters, and at that point, being the massive geek that I was, I already knew enough backstory to the characters to not be bothered that it started off 5 years after all the heroes had started fighting crime. I loved it. But I started loosing more and more interest when I heard that they were trying to reboot it, or at least do a soft reboot. By the time Superman had lost most of his powers, Jim Gordon became Batman, and Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz replaced Hal Jordan, I had completely stopped buying new issues of anything. I've heard good things about Rebirth, but in all honesty, it just doesn't catch my attention like the New 52 did, and I especially didn't like how they got rid of Clark Kent, only to replace him with the Pre 52 version that had somehow not been affected by Flashpoint and has been living in hiding along with Pre 52 Lois and their son. It's a nice idea, sure, but it didn't make any sense to me, even by comic book standards. I kinda lost track of what my point is. I'm basically trying to say that I personally feel that the New 52, while not the best, was still really good and I'm grateful that that's what got me to read comics, because up until that point, I'd only watch the old cartoons and movies about superheroes.
honestly the only good creative thing to come out of New 52 was Batwoman, the art and style and the way that comic was put together with something completely new of course they canceled it. Nice one DC
I can't even read most new Marvel comics because the influence from up top is so obvious. This is especially the case with properties they really covet like Guardians of the Galaxy who had previously been an unsung fan favorite with some of the most out there and unique stories. Now to read a Guardians comic is to read someone basically writing the film characters personalities where they don't really fit. It has that uncanny valley feel of say a comic book based on Rick and Morty, where it just feels off from the beginning. DC on the other hand has been killing it since rebirth and their movie wing went to hell. You just can't have both in this world I guess.

Why be upset the New 52 dropped readers into a few years of pre-established continuity? It's boring as hell watching the same tried and true origin stories over and over again. How many times do I need to see Batman's parents die in Crime Alley? By skipping the bullshit, DC keeps the general canon from years past while allowing writers to jump in and tell stories right away. I never once had a problem with this while reading through Snyder's Batman run, Justice League, or any other series.
I don't think u can judge it as a hole I've see cuz it has some great stuff in there and some rlly bad stuff. Like it has arguably the best batman run of all time and one of the worst superman runs off all time. A gd swamp thing,Wonder Woman and animal book. Gd batgirl. Rlly bad teen Titans. Better Shazam stuff. The introduction of justice league Dark. A rlly bad green arrow run and then one of the best arrow runs of all time following it. Awesome justice league run. Green lantern stayed the same and when it changed it was okay I guess. Some rlly cool flash stories but wally West was gone 🙁. Constantine was worse as well as Omac,the forever ppl and many other forgettable titles. Phantom stranger was alright. There was one rlly gd event book (Forever evil),one okay event book (trinity war) and 2 rlly bad event books (convergence and futures end). Aquaman had the best Aquaman of all time arguably but then turned into a rlly weak book after Geoff John's left. Batman and robin and batman incorporated where both rlly gd series. Detective comics was on and off. Nightwing was okay. Grayson was awesome. Damian son of batman was okay as well as red hood and the outlaws. I thought Deathstroke was bad tbh even though I rlly love his character in marv wolfmans run ,teen Titans and rebirth. Lobo was butchered rlly badly. Red hood and arsenal was fine as well as suicide squad. Justice league international wasn't gd,same with static shock. Superman and Wonder Woman was fine I guess but Lois and Clark was better. Half of batwing was rlly gd up until judd winnick left the title. Apparently Catwoman was no gd.

JL International is alright, but not as good as Earth-2. But yeah, the Teen Titans books, Superman and Woman and Catwoman's run of the new 52.....they all fucking suck!!!
One thing I won’t ever forgive the New 52 for doing is axing Wally West and the rest of the Flash Family in leau for Barry Allen (who I was never really a fan of anyway)

Im not a big comic collector but I have around 50 new 52 trade paperbacks. The big thing for me was the number of times the series got cancelled. I picked up blue beetle vol 1 and 2 and it got shelved. So did Justice League International which I acc thought was quite strong. The final straw was Teen Titans which I had already bought 5 of. I'd say most of the stories were pretty good. Scott Snyder batman was actually insane and even after going back and reading the long halloween and year one etc it holds up well alongside them. Having said that, there were definitely too many events and to be honest way too many runs. Even just in the batman universe there was a sea of crap like red hood and the outlaws, batwing and like 4 batman stories. The new 52 was supposed to prevent it being chaotic but acc it was fucking chaos anyway 😂😂😂
Also question why does DC remove writers from stories there obviously doing very well on? Key example the Green Lanterns writer Stan Humphreys and the former Nightwing writer Tim Seely? Why take them off those titles when in my opinion they should of never been moved.
