My cousin is going to school for ballet. And they out jets glue on the bottom (where the ball of your foot is) so when they go on their toes they have nice support. :)

***** Dancers are athletes as well as performers. I take a look at my daughters teacher and every muscle stands out. The performance would not be the same with flabby legs.
@aleshaj.9884
@aleshaj.9884 8 лет назад
Anna Reuter Ballet is a performing art (obviously..), but you're right on the money--ballet dancers are athletes and ballet is a sport (kind of). Ballet dancers train for hours on end and must be in peak physical condition in order to pull off all those spins and jumps. The only reason I wouldn't consider ballet a sport is because dancers work together rather than compete against each other.. of course everyone in a company competing for a top spot, but you get what I mean.

Ballet is metal and you'll never convince me otherwise. The sheer training, demands, pain, mental anguish, injuries and dedication that goes into the sport is simply astounding. You really have to love it.

@maya plisetskaya's left eyebrow It's an artform, but I still consider it a sport. It's physically strenuous and incredibly hard work. Hours and hours of practice in addition to dealing with constant injuries and pain, all while smiling through it and making it look easy. Add in the fact that it's competitive, with other ballerinas competing with one other to be the best and get the best parts.

My teacher, Nina Stroganova, showed me her pointe shoes. They had darned tips, white shellac inside and cement glue outside. They lasted for six years, and were still usable 40 years later. And they made no noise. I don't believe shoes have to be constantly changed.

Just because pointe shoes are hard does not mean they are easy to use. They are still painful, and the harder they are, the harder to dance. Unless, of course, you extremely strong feet. Don't "assume" things.

@Belbelblur
@Belbelblur 10 лет назад
I often get asked about my calves when I'm doing weights in the gym, I still dance, and it really works the calves, all the demi pointe work (rising to balls of feet) and especially when we have to balance our entire body weight on one leg. I have giant calves LOL
@chestnutsev7
@chestnutsev7 10 лет назад
Christabel Ng Thanks for reply, you say you do weights in gym, do you do any direct work on calves like standing calves machine for instance. i used to do those very intensly but got little response. other bodyparts grew well plus genetically they are my weakest area. I think they are attractive muscles calves ,and on ladies one of the first things i look at .LOL.
@Belbelblur
@Belbelblur 10 лет назад
Not specifically calves related. For legs I do squats (standard 😝) and deadlift up to 50kg for now. I try to stretch my calves out rather than train them specifically because I run and I dance and they're pretty tight from all that.

That’s a great idea with signature, of course, I would probably keep my first and last pair but that’s so cool. I remember before I was told I was getting pointe shoes I wanted a pair, even just look at. The only issue is I know sometimes dancers bleed in the shoe and I would probably fill the shoe with something to prevent audience members from trying to go en pointe because that could seriously damage their feet forever.

I've never understood why pointe shoes haven't evolved a bit. When a maker has specifications for specific ballerinas, why can't they come with elastics and ribbons attached? And it seems they all get bent in half to soften them so why do they come so hard when nobody keeps them like that?
@selenieaned1829
@selenieaned1829 7 лет назад
Most pointe shoes don't come with ribbons or elastics attached because they are sold to a regular market as well as a professional market. So they can't tailor to every dancer. And not all shoes are hard. Some shoes are very soft and easy to break in. The problem is that if you have very strong arches the shoes with a soft shank (the part of the shoe that varies in hardness) will very easily break, the harder version won't break so quickly. But every dancer is different, that is the main reason for both the hard shank and the fact that the elastics and ribbons do not come sewn with all brands.

I understand that. I'm talking about the elite dancers who get their shoes made to their specifications, not the companies that get the shoes sent in bulk. Like the lead ballerina in the ABC or Bolshoi. Why is someone so prestigious still having to break in shoes?
@brittanyd6607
@brittanyd6607 7 лет назад
A lot of the times it's even a ritual the dancer develops. Like when I was dancing en pointe I always had to do my own shoes. Once my grandma tried to do them for me as a gift and I got scared and nervous and couldn't dance. I'm sure that carries over to prestigious dancers too. It seems silly but it's part of the process.

You can, shape doesn't really matter in dance nor is foot size, but you will lose weight because of all the exercises, warm ups, and stretching you have to do. It's tiring, but since you're doing something you like, it's worth it.

Ballet is EXTREMELY physically difficult. Ballet is an art, however, not a sport. I don't know why some people think if ballet is not called a sport then people aren't accepting it's physically challenging. It's normally done in shows, not at competitions. Even golf is a sport, as physically lacking as it is, because it's played to win a competition. You can't "win" ballet. It's not very nice for them to always pick on football players either just because what they do in ballet is harder. Who said football was harder/better? So leave it alone. I'm not here for people to attack me, I still said ballet is EXTREMELY difficult. I just don't get this whole obsession over one word, "sport", because if it's not called a sport it's still difficult, right? If you disagree then please keep it to yourself.

I don't care either way, it's you opinion. However, I do want to point out two things. I am in color guard, which if you don't know, it's part of marching band. Color guard is considered what is called a sport of the arts. Dance is also considered as such. The second thing being that there are competitions for ballet. There are competitions for all forms of dance. It's just that most of them aren't showcased because dance is not as popular as football or soccer or other sports like that. While I do respect your opinion, I did just want to point these things out.

xCyaNx x.x no I completely agree. I've never liked seeing those, "if _____ were easier, it would be call football" cause football isn't easy. I don't play it, but I like it and I do know how demanding it is. So yeah I don't believe that ballet and football should be compared when the two are incredibly different

+xchocofairy I completely agree - gymnastics is a sport but it is also an art form - if you watch Federer he moves like a male ballerina - I think because it is so high brow people don't know much about it or have an aversion to it - all sport has an element of artistry its just that the scoring is easier to follow than ballet which is scored on artistic merit, which is inaccessible to the public at large.

It is almost unbelievable how many shoes the dancers go through. I don't do ballet so for the longest time I thought pointe shoes were like tap shoes; replace them when they break. It kinda sucks that they have to work in each new pair when it may last them only a week or 2 weeks.

Love these videos. Not a ballerina but a showjumper...equestrienne for about 23 years since age 4...with some years off due to my chronic pain and heart condition and the politics and multi millions that I don't have that come with the sport...but was lucky to see a travelling Russian ballet company at a small university I had to go to instead of my top school due to my health and Dr's being at home...and they were fantastic. Performed Sleeping Beauty. It wasn't the Bolshoi, but whatever travelling company, if they are Russian ballet dancers, you know they will be fantastic regardless, even if they aren't "first string".

I do Indian classical dance, but I can still relate to the changing of clothing, every time I have to make sure that I can dance comfortably in my clothes so I can really flow with my movements, and express my feelings, so each costume has to show the right things and feel great for me.

@Life With Dante So far as I understand ballet shoes are made up of mostly leather, satin and a paste made out of a mixture of glue and shredded paper, and of course thread. Anywho, all of those materials are pretty safe for the environment and should also all be compostable.
@adambilling3280
@adambilling3280 5 лет назад
A vast majority of the Royal Ballet's pointes and flats are thrown away after they become "unusable" by a performer. However, a lot of shoes are also signed and then auctioned off or, for ones that ballerinas wont use for any reason e.g. thr box is too narrow/wide for them they actually donate then to schools so that the shoes are not being made to waste and they will actually live up to their purpose... it is very costly creating the shoes, around £250,000 a year, but they all get used to their fullest extent so, personally, i think that it is worth not reusing the material, because that would also come across wear and tear as time goes by
