Learn how to manage the pressure in a boiler's exhaust stack.
Pressure in a boilers stack can greatly affect the combustion process potentially costing you money or creating a dangerous situation. Today WARE Boiler University Instructor Jude Wolf will talk about how to utilize Barometric Draft controls to manage the pressures inside of the exhaust stack.
While the perfect draft pressure in a boiler will be different for each installation, how it works is all the same. Allowing the exhaust gasses to escape properly with a changing load or external pressures is key for having a well tuned combustion system. Watch as Jude explains how the control works and functions in a steam boiler system.

It would be nice to show where and how you check the draft while taking the reading for making the adjustments.

This is one of the most overlooked part of any fuel fired appliance... It is absolutely necessary to set your draft to a proper range. generally as low as possible. I like a range of -.02 to -.06. I see many appliances actually overfired with the combustion analyser because of excessive draft. If you set your fuel pressure to factory specs and then try to tune the burner, it is often found to have too high of O2. Most people will assume too much air being introduced into the burner dampers due to a linkage or damper adjustment... Its very possible that you have too high of draft. Air in equals air out!! If your draft is too high, you will lose efficiency due to moving too much "excess air" through the combustion process. It is very important to not only check your draft first but more importantly make it stable under all conditions with a barometric damper or similar. Only then can you properly set your burner combustion to proper ranges.

Thanks for your comment....Do you have any idea are they used with HRSGs/power plant stacks? Thanks.

I do HVAC work we run into fair share of heaters and boilers and I got this PK thermithic replacement boilers that when it was installed 2 years ago they never installed drafts. It really never dawned on me that I had to have a draft until I talk to Tech Support. Now the stack goes up all about 15'. I find it odd that boilers can run for about 2 years with a critical piece of equipment not installed. Now the boiler fails at least once A-day on Ignition failures. So I'm really hoping that when I install this the problem is gonna go away. Fantastic video thank you very much

how much of an increase in efficiency can this device give?

If I add this to a coal/wood stove, at what point do I read my Dwyer manometer and set the damper? Without having a fire in the stove? If so, I guess I would lose conditioned air when I'm not using the stove but that may be minor. Thx!

Excellent video....Can anyone tell please are they used with HRSGs stacks or huge power plant coal fired boiler stacks? I have seen induced drafts fans? So, do these barometric dampers provide same purpose? Thanks.

A barometric draft can only regulate and control draft, not create it. If there is not enough draft, as in many larger applications like you mention, more can be created with a taller stack, or induced draft fan. Either can be paired with a barometric damper on smaller applications.

¿where or in what parts of the boiler should be installed the taps of the furnace pressure transmitters of a balanced draft coal boiler?
@jregamey

This unit then is useless without that tool? I picked up old school powerless oil furnace. I wanted to add this to it. But I also want to have the wood stove hooked up aswell to the same chimney. And use them both but one at a time.

So I have a question, is this something that should constantly be adjusted day by day cause some days are colder than others

What about a system with no fan? Is the Draft usually at .10 inches?

I have a 10" flue, should I look for a 10" barometric damper or can a smaller damper work?

Recommend using the same size damper due to it being easier to install than a smaller one. Hopefully that helps. Thanks !

I've seen many of these wired in place most likely because they annoyed the people that worked there during windy weather.

Tbh, height of the stack does not vary much you must compensate against to :P
