Today Uncle Stonnie is working with Max, a nice English Labrador Retriever. In this video Stonnie talks about how being overweight is affecting Max's behavior and what steps we are taking to change Max's behavior by returning him to a healthy weight and overall fitness level.

We had a couple of labs that, of course, loved food. We had to put them on a strict diet so they didn't get fat. We found that they really liked carrots for a treat so every day they got a big carrot which helped them to feel full. The carrots were also great for cleaning their teeth.

Stonnie, that was exactly what I needed to hear. My old yellow lab ain’t a football but he is a little too fluffy for his age (15). He gets plenty of exercise, and definitely isn’t grumpy, but I’m going to have to be tough and deny him some treats and bread slices. Great lecture! Thanks!

Love love love. Funny enough last month I got a little worried my own English lab’s weight was creeping up (he’s not fat but that’s where we were heading) cut his feed a little, increased exercise a little and am already seeing results.

Best thing about keeping your dog fit and their weight under control is that you'll have many more years of companionship with them vs if you overfeed them and cause them an early death and years of joint pains. ...not to mention the unnecessary vets bills you're setting yourself up for.

Thanks for the video Uncle Stonnie. We came to this same exact realization about 2.5 months ago with our 2 year old English lab. We completely changed her diet to a better quality kibble (Farmina) calorie count and heavily control how much homemade jerky treats we give her (we gave her way too much I’m embarrassed to say how much). Our exercise regime has been great with adventures, obedience, and socialization play. We’ve noticed a significant change in how she looks and her energy level during play. However she weighs almost exactly the same on the scale as when we started! Even though she feels lighter when we carry her. We aren’t sure what else we can do besides just continue with what we’ve been doing.
@StonnieDennis
@StonnieDennis 10 месяцев назад
If she’s in good shape and has a nice body composition, keep on doing what you are doing. The scale doesn’t really tell you what you need to know; how she looks and acts is what’s important.

It seems like swimming would be a good option here (or anywhere really) - low impact for the joints and tremendous activity level to tap into those fat stores. I don't think it would be too difficult to get a lab into the water!😅
@DEADB33F
@DEADB33F 10 месяцев назад
Same with humans. If you're overweight swimming & cycling are the two best ways to lose a bit of flab that won't tax your overburdened joints too much. ...easier to teach a dog to swim than ride a bike though.

My boy is in phenomenal shape. He has nice muscle definition and is able to run for a long time, play fetch, hike without any problems. He's very athletic for a Labrador too and likes to jump and climb on things. There's two labs in in my village that are insanely overweight. They have skin almost covering they're face and can barely move. I sometimes see them when I'm driving around. It's really eye opening seeing the difference between my dog and the other dogs and how the same dog have their quality of life completely ruined by ignorant owners.

Such a fantastic topic. I have raised sport dogs and competed in conformation and fly ball for over 20 years. I see the benefit of a fit dog both mentally and physically. My dogs tend to live 16-17 years with proper diet, regular mental and physical exercise and titer tests instead of vaccines, avoiding the vet and all the poisons they recommend on and in my dogs, etc. I get so discouraged and disgusted when my puppy people come here with fat dogs! The dog food companies don't help with recommending way more than the average house dog needs on the back of the bag and most food is crap anyway. Then there is the whole "treat" training issue. How about just using the dogs kibble if you want to use "treats"? Fabulous info, Stonnie. Thanks for posting.

Exercise is definitely important when trying to get a dog to a healthy weight. And a set back such as a torn CCL can be challenging. But addressing the dog's diet is also important. Feed a dog a high carb, overly processed food ( think kibble) and is it any wonder there are so many fat dogs?

Love your work stonnie❤ Do you have any guidelines on how much exercise a labrador should get per day. Mine is roughly getting 3 hours of gentle walking each day in a forest and a beach. Or 1 hour of gentle walking and 1 hour of intense fetch/dummy work. In your opinion is this sufficient for a labrador of 20 months don't want to short change him, he sleeps most of the day. Thank you.

Currently dealing with trying to help our girl loose weight. Her coat does not quit!!! I am going to start photo documenting and see how it goes. Appreciate the tip! Our biggest obstacle is not the work or exercise, it’s balancing calories between feeding, training aid treats, bone chews, etc… it gets overwhelming and frustrating.

If you feed 1 cup of kibble per meal, take 1/2 cup out and use it for training purposes.
@Kate_Short-For-Bob
@Kate_Short-For-Bob 10 месяцев назад
With our previous black lab, we weighed his food each meal..just a simple set of electronic scales next to where the food and bowls were. We found that helped loads - he was a perfect weight and didn't fluctuate more than half a kilo ish. The training treats came out of that weighed food. (We're doing the same with our new fox red pup).

Sometimes it’s hardest to see the clarity of simple logic when bogged down. I appreciate your simple answers and will mix it between 1/2 cup feed, 1/2 cup work/train per meal. 👍🏻
@riapichay
@riapichay 10 месяцев назад
I had this same exact challenge with my english lab. We were overfeeding her treats once we started portioning and counting how much we actually gave her. It was a bit of a wake up call. I did exactly as the other commenters. I had a set amount of calories and I fed less kibble to add in the treats or used kibble for her treat training instead. I only bring out the big gun high value treats for obedience training sessions but they were also accounted for in my feedings. So I would take out another 1/2 cup of kibble. I also went to a higher end weight management kibble to help me feel better about taking away so much food. So there is a high amount of nutrient per kibble. I'll eventually move do a non weight management one because weight management also has a lot of calories per kibble I also try to stick to treats that are basically one ingredient protein source. A lot of the multi ingredient treats from bigger stores have a lot of molasses and other fillers

I personally do not like when people overuse the term “aggressive.” When any animal or person is in pain or simply not feeling well, it’s/they’re going to try to get things/people to leave it/them alone. Quite natural to snap or react, but to call anyone or thing “aggressive” under those conditions is inappropriate as that term is understood as an unacceptable behavior. I’d like to see anyone go through extreme pain, stress, severe illness, etc and not naturally try to protect/defend themselves until they are in a condition that isn’t so miserable and vulnerable.

I’ve only owned two dogs. My first was a beagle and my experience with beagles was the one my wife’s family had and that thing got into everything and was overweight. I told my wife that we will never have a fat dog and by golly our beagle was never overweight. She lived to be 16+ years old. My current dog is a gsd that I rescued and is highly trained. He has zero interest in human food and if I don’t put it in his bowl he won’t eat it. If he gets overweight that’s my fault. He’s helped ME lose 25 pounds and more in the future. He is not very fit though, about a half mile in he’s ready to go home but it’s Florida and summer so he’s hot!

If a dog is in pain because its joints are affected by excess weight, the answer isn't more exercise which can cause more pain and possibly permanent injury. The proper thing to do is to alter the diet first and when there's some weight loss, increase activity.

Neuter/spay condemns a dog to being overweight. And, limiting food is not the simple solution. Limiting good food limits nutrition and makes a dog hungry and feel deprived. Always do research and at least delay de-sexing a dog. It is not a common practice in England, for example, because they understand the physical and mental disadvantages. Turns out that American trained veterinarians have actually been brainwashed in vet school to believe that all dogs should be fixed. Certainly, the weight, joint, endocrine and other health problems that are amplified by de-sexing dogs results in a lot of profit for veterinarians and the vet pharmaceutical industry.
