That's why my mom always says Scream N Holla & ask for Supervisors if need be so they can SEE your pain & do their jobs cause alot of them don't believe we can feel pain or they think we feel less pain than non blacks (there were various research studies done on this very subject regarding black pain that showed medical bias towards black patients & how its still very prevalent today) with the exact same medical complications

Blac Indo I don’t think that’s it. It’s this new “woke” mentality that’s being used for capital gain rather than raising a awareness. I actually saw an opposing social experiment where they gathered several non black people to talk about black health vs white health issues. When some of the interviewees agreed there are differences in black health and white health, they were told it was a stereotype. It’s like okay... which is it??

The part about black families not talking to each other about illnesses is sooo true. In my family here in Grenada, its like a cultural thing to keep the illness a secret. Even when the person is dead, people still dont like to say what the person died from. Its crazy.

Soo true. Just recently I've had really bad back pains and abdominal pains. I told my mom and she just suggested to take pain killers. It didn't help much. I asked if i could go to the hospital, but she didn't wanna take me for some reason. But I finally went and they diagnosed me with a temporary infection. If i hadn't gone to the doctor it would have gotten worse. My family hates hospitals and doctors for some reason smh.

My aunt had breast cancer 5 years ago, I told her one day in salvation army after seeing one boob removed, "I am your niece, don't you dare hide your illnesses from anyone in out family. Grandma had breast cancer twice and survived, your sisters do not have breast cancer including my own mom but I am your niece, it could skip a generation and affect me and not knowing our families thorough medical history could harm me or anyone else in our family." She was shocked I was very stern with her.

That's a cultural thing?? No wonder. My granny hid her diabetes from me most of my life and I wound up being prediabetic at 13. She also died suddenly from colon cancer because she had hidden it from the family. Made her death more difficult to process and accept. Tell your family about your illnesses!!!

I'm from the West Indies right up until my uncle was having kidney surgery he tried to hide it, my aunt had a baby outside of where it should be and she almost died trying to hide it etc. I have so many family members that have medical issues that are very serious but hide it, it's ridiculous how they treat these issues especially mental health. There was a time in my life when I was in a dark place, my grandparents took me to get blessed because they thought I was possessed. Like it's entirely irritating itself.

Berika Halette me too sis . I graduated with two degrees and could only get admin or reception role. My background is in marketing and in finance. All job agencies only gave me admin or reception rolls. Nothing is wrong with those roles , however my skillsets aren’t in that area. During that time, I lost my apt, did not have a job for a few months , spend all my savings and backup funds, was homeless for a period , a family member allowed me to move back in with them. I landed roles and was treated poorly and disposable. Many of times not having training being expected to be perfect. The constant stress of in and out of work wore me out physically and mentally. To the where I was in the hospital for two for pancreatitis and mental health services. I decided to go back too level up. now that I know what I want in my career and better stand up for myself.

This happened with my sister inlaw. She's hispanic and I took her to the hospital. I told them I think she is having her baby. She's in pain and it keeps getting worse. They said ok and had us go sit down and wait! Like are you kidding me! After they finally called us we needed to give all the information while she is there trying to put up with the pain. Then we are taken by a nurse to sit again in a room when he takes her pressure and is asking how ling and all of that. After they put her in a wheelchair and we head up. So I'm thinking ok we are finally getting somewhere. They take us to the labor room and this nurse comes in and asks her for how long has she been having contractions and so on. My sister in law says she doesn't know maybe about I forgot how many minutes apart she said. The nurse looks at her and says it's been about so and so minutes and you are speaking perfectly fine with me. So the nurse gives her a cup for her to pee on and leaves. She goes to the bathroom and I can hear it's getting worse. She tried, but she couldn't pee. Fast forward when she is finally on the bed the nurse is suppose to check how far she has dilated. When my sister in-laws ob finally came in he asked the nurse this and the nurse said she wasn't close at all. So the ob looks at her and goes over to check on my sister in law. That's when he says she's close to giving birth! The nurse just responded with oh well when I checked she wasn't that far along. I'm not confrontational, but I asked another nurse if she was leaving already because I don't feel comfortable having her anywhere near my sister in law or my nephew. She was so rude and dismissive! How can she be a nurse and be like this. I don't understand when my brother finally came in I relaxed because he was around to support her better. I did see him argue with the nurse that was rude, but I never asked him what happened since I got side tracked when I saw my gorgeous nephew be born.
@goldblue976
@goldblue976 4 года назад
I'm so sorry you went through that. It's nurses and doctors in general though. I think a lot of times the nurses lose their compassion because they are all overworked. There's a huge shortage health professionals in our country. The doctors just get rich and arrogant. Always remember to get a second opinion if possible.

These things (as it relates to birth) were not major issues when BLACK WOMEN Were being taken care of by OTHER BLACK WOMEN. Black midwives in the last century delivered babies safer and mothers were tended to immediately after birth. It’s funny how now that the practice (midwife) among black women has declined that the morbid rate goes up. My grand mother and great grandmother delivered their kids (13 from one and 11 from the other) in homes and make shift hospitals in the south and all of their babies survived, their pregnancies were documented by their midwives, and their health was watched closely after delivering. There are thousands of black women who had these experiences. We need more black physicians, we need more medical journals from midwives in the past (there is more than one way to deliver a baby than the common way) and we need it now.

I’ve heard many Polish people here saying- if you want to die, go to the hospital. Our health care system is horrible overall. When I had my son I was bombarded by even a social worker asking me if I wanted to keep my son. I was shocked. It’s like they wanted to take my son away right there. WTF

The one thing that no one is speaking about is also the mistreatment by our own people in hospitals. I have been fortunate with my doctors. I’ve learned to speak up after my first bad experience at 17 when my baby was sick and they weren’t treating her. I had to contact the health department due to the mistreatment and then everyone acted accordingly after that but I have always had the worst treatment in hospitals by black nurses and I don’t get it and I always wonder if they treat the white patients the same way.
@celiawilia6677
@celiawilia6677 4 года назад
Vel I'm white and was getting mistreated by white people in an ER. My mother is a nurse at that hospital and has told me that many co-workers wouldn't want to use their own hospital. I had a miscarriage,but was fine...then, I started having episodes of hemorrhaging. My mother took me to a different hospital the next day(to see a gynecologist)and plead to them because I had lost of strength at that point. Then, I hemorrhaged in their waiting room.The doctor saw me shortly after that and rushed me into surgery. As someone with many family members in the medical industry, I see how they typically put less focus on the basics such as diet, sleep, and balancing stress to keep you healthy. They think in terms of patented pharmaceuticals and don't utilize critical thinking for healing dis-eases.

My cousin lost her baby girl at 8 1/2 mths pregnant with a healthy baby girl up until the day she went to the hospital for severe pain and bleeding. They made her sit in waiting room for 4hrs, until she ended up passing out. Her baby died due to a placenta rupture and her baby girl basically drowned in her blood; she ended up having to have a blood transfusions, and almost died as well. The hospital covered it up; and It was later found out that they had not even checked her in until she passed out. They brushed her pain off and left her waiting , Im assuming because she was a blk teenaged, unwed mother, at a catholic hospital, they chopped it up as her not knowing any better, not important, and didnt take her serious. Her symptoms alone should have given off red flags, and her baby would still be alive, if only they would have atleast checked her in so she would've been able to see triage. No one was held accountable, even though thru research, It was found they had other cases, dealing with discrimination and malpractice, when dealing with young mothers and minorities SMH!!

Abortion is not healthcare. Also as an African American girl who recently gave birth, they STRESSED to me what risks and statistics there are for African American pregnancies and babies. This is in LA county, not a small town or anything. Every doctor's office I went to there are papers and pamplets AND groups like Black Infant Health that help with literally everything so I don't know what BET is talking about when I only learned about fibroids and other health issues specific to my ethnicity from doctors. Sounds like these women just have bad doctors but that is not the case or the normal for everyone. Also not just me, all my family members. If you have a bad doctor nurse or gynecologist then seek a better one, they are out there, my father is one of them.

I’ve been in the hospital many times once for a kidney stone and another time for a hole in my intestine, very very painful and the doctors and nurses wouldn’t and couldn’t do anything for me an hour later and I would’ve been dead but before they knew what was actually wrong with me they had no idea what I was feeling.

They probably specified that she’s black because racial biased exists duh. BW (since that’s the topic) aren’t taken as serious when they are in pain and our concerns go unheard even when we are pregnant/need medical care. If you need a history on black bodies and medicine... look it up.

Asking as a genuinely concerned Black woman. Could hair relaxers be a culprit contributing to some of our health issues??
@Landry16
@Landry16 4 года назад
It definitely could because I have many fibroids and I used relaxers all my life. My sister never used any relaxers and she doesn't have any fibroids.

My Mom has fibroids removed about a decade ago and I wonder if that’s a potential for me? Sorry you had to go through that. How are you feeling now? What were your symptoms?
@Landry16
@Landry16 4 года назад
@@natashadwyer8336 Yes. Definitely look into getting it removed. I am hoping for a partial hysterectomy soon. I have 6 fibroids and the sizes range from a grape to a lemon. I'm allergic to birth control so I have to just deal with the pain. Basically I have really painful periods and heavy bleeding.

jenna dean oh nooo. If this something that can be seen during a Pap smear? Or anytime they take a look down there with the speculum? Jenna, thank you for being so candid. Going to keep an eye on this. Really appreciate you sharing. Thank you. Hope things are smooth now and there’s more options in the future for you.

Being apart of clinical trials resonated with me. As a breast cancer survivor, I turned down one. But watching this has changed my mind.

The simple solution is clean up your diet and exercise more and you will see the doctor less. Meaning , they will have less chances of dying. Black women have to take some accountability before blaming doctors. If you live a sedentary lifestyle expect an early death and many trips to the hospital 🤷‍♀️....there I said what no one wants to say because suddenly that’s become racist.

soraya .e Do you know what Serena Williams does for a living? Are you also aware of what Beyonce does for a living?
@soraya.e5482

Mica Serena Williams is a professional athlete and Beyoncé is a singer. Both ladies are past their prime of having kids so that automatically makes you high risk regardless of money and doctors but of course you wouldn’t mention that

My mom (Mexican) when she had me 28 years ago, the doctor never offered her an epidural even though she was clearly suffering from the pain. She said the doctor told her Mexicans don’t complain about pain they can take it...my mom said she would have definitely asked for epidural if she knew how to communicate it.
@goodiegoodygumdrops
@goodiegoodygumdrops 4 года назад
Camelia Vivero I didn't have an epidural and I was in labor almost 2 days. Epidurals increase the risk of having to have a c-section and they cause back issues later on in life.

Mystique Darkholme yeah but my poor mom said she felt like she was going to die. I have two kids one epidural for my first and yes definitely had back pain but working out actually helped a lot. My comment was more on how she was treated by the ignorant doctor. My mouth dropped to the floor
