As the country's largest conglomerate, I hope SM switches from retail/services and venture more towards industrialism and manufacturing. The country needs to industrialise for any hope of becoming a developed nation. As the biggeat fish in the pond SM carries great responsibility for industrializing the country. Please be more like Toyota, Samsung, HHI, and Mitsubishi heavy industries and less like Walmart, Aeon and Ikea
Not sure if he mentioned it but the rise of Filipinos wanting to go to the mall in the 90's is partially due to climate. People with money want to dress nice and do nice things but it's absurdly too hot be wearing layers and staying outside a lot. The mall became the unofficial parks for the daytime while the official parks usually stay empty until the sun is weak. People go to the malls with no intention of buying anything really but to just hang out and enjoy the massive air conditioning.
What touched me most about SM malls is they give importance to little people like myself. Notice where their public transport terminals are located - right in front of their malls, in the most prime of locations - unlike in other malls where the commuting public has a hard time accessing public transport. I believe they realized early on that it's the combined spending power of the little people that would sustain its growth in the long run, and it's paying off handsomely.
Thats because SM malls wanted to temp you from buying in their mall before going home. Also SM malls tends to be a mall for commoner or those in the middle class at least so they have to make it more accessible but give importance to little people? I don't think so, they dont evem regularize their employees. They dont care about small people, they just want you to spend.
@@skyscraper7664 No company would regularize all staff if their business is seasonal, would you? SM malls have year-round regular staff AND they hire extras during the holidays. Btw, I think you missed my point. Compare the location of SM public transport terminals to those of Ayala and Robinson malls from years back. They must have realized what SM has been doing coz lately, the Ayalas developed that magnificent transport terminal right where the Intercontinental Hotel was, EDSA cor Ayala Ave. Also, all mall owners would want people to shop in their malls, not only SM.
truthfully, aside from school, SM is my second home growing up (even cutting classes sometimes just to spend time there. lol)...=) love SM, for its service, especially accommodating evacuees and shelter during typhoons, providing free wifi and necessary services, etc., but more because it represents both Filipino and global culture. truly, a mall that is like a home.

Fun fact: When the Ikea was built here at Pasay (name of the city where MoA is located in) They built an extension to the building so that people who park at MoA can easily access the Ikea. Also, there are tons of buffets are the back of MoA, called Sm by the Bay, which has Buffet 101 and Vikings
SM tends to attract local communities with the mixed intention of enjoying the free air conditioning and decent mall events, either from nationwide activities or locally hosted ones that SM facilitates. SM positioned themselves as a pillar of most local economies and as an event venue for any small to medium sized events.
SM also invest in education and owned National University which is the biggest campus located in university belt manila and the new one in SM fairview NU Campus which is soon to be open they are now competitve in every sports we have in national and local level, the UAAP VOLLEYBALL, CHEERING COMPETITION, etc hope they are expanding their campus to all provinces from luzon visayas and mindanao as well
The voice really sounds like a very good text-to-speech software and most subtle mistakes like these are often caused by just blindly typing words into the software without paying attention about phonetics, the software obviously doesn't know the context of pronouncing 'Sy' as 'See".
@@raikey2176 Idk, in some of the old videos the voiceover is different, it both sound like generic text to speech. And I'm not talking about robotic voices, Text-to-Speech software has become so advanced, some sound so human, they are all over youtube nowadays.
Ever wondered why theres no Mercury Drug stores inside SM Malls? Legend has it that when Henry was still selling shoes, he asked the owner of Mercury drug if he can peddle his shoes right beside his store. The owner of the drug store outright drove him away, so Henry made a promise if ever he got rich he would not let Mercury Drug stores in his establisments.
I've always been amazed at how huhe those malls were. Although it's a bit of an hour commute to get there from my home which is why i rarely visit the nearest SM branch here. I'm planning on visiting there with my friends on September
We will see how SM will go through the current crisis. It has been through several but this time there’s a war, inflation, supply chain interruptions and a pandemic that crippled them for 2 years. Something’s gotta give
SM Group of Companies is the largest conglomerates not just in the country but also in Southeast Asia. It is also one of the biggest in Asia and in the world.
I was about to comment about the slow adoption of fintech on BDO, as of today you can see on how old & vulnerable their system, so i don't think they can catch up very soon especially nowadays, because GCash, PayMaya, and other banks that has robust security & optimized online feature.
Love how they avoid to regularizing filipinos employee for many decades by contractual and exploiting fresh graduate every year. They gain much money in this scheme.
@@zchaosemperor81 it's honestly pretty cheap, but the large array of options and the rows of shops in different levels can burn a hole through your pocket pretty quick...heck not even 40 minutes Into SM city Cebu and I was shocked to see that I already blew through 3,000 pesos
@@zchaosemperor81 its expensive if you're actually there to shop. i visit mainly for the entertainment (arcades and theater) and for bonding with friends.
And what’s even more sad is that these workers in the malls are, for the most part, not actually SM “employees” per se, rather they are agency contractors that are not regular employees of SM, as a way to really maximize margins with cheap labor.
@@denniscabubas7189 surely we have laws which these companies just follow the bare minimum where in fact they can afford to do more if they truly value their people
SM Foundation should do something to those poor and homeless people around Manila City. How to help them and make the city to be more clean... I am Ezra from Jakarta.
An a Filipino and i think SM means super mall since it starts with S and ends with M but i knew it was originally a shoemart since my grandfather told me about it
@@eduardochavacano Glad to know they still practice it. One time me and my sister went shopping for clothes. There was a cluster of sales ladies who were huddled in a corner, chatting, and nobody bothered to check on us. When we called for assistance, we saw the irritation on the girl's face for breaking the huddle. I think this practice minimizes such incidents and makes sure they earn what they are paid to do. It's not always the case wherein SM is the "villain" and the staff, the "hero." Pretty certain she'll be the first to complain when not regularized, hence the attitude.
@@eduardochavacano lol, that just happened to me yesterday at the mall. However, she was actually nice and even assisted my mother in choosing clothes for me.

SM is great at everything but I have to say this from my personal experience: Their Bowling Centers suck. Why ? Because they can be overcrowded easily with casual bowlers, they’re overpriced and worst of all is their Pinsetters were poorly maintained and the mechanics were barely qualified to work on them since they didn’t do any Maintenance and also not staying behind the Lanes at all times.
Hey I know an octogenarian who goes to sm everyday, all 365 days of the yr, and spends an average 1000 to 1500 pesos a day , everyday at their supermarket etc
A few years ago some BDO depositor's accounts have been hacked and lost their money when they complain the BDO blamed them and accused them of scamming, but only when the government intervened that they investigate and return the depositor's money, BDO thinks that they can get away with it but they didn't, a really sad experience for depositors.
in jakarta some malls have to fight against the online shopping trend. when we come to mall, the crowded area only in the foodcourt or cafes or restos. Tokopedia, Bibli and Bukalapak are the names in Indonesia that have benefited greatly from online shopping era.
There’s also the Lim family that founded the New City Commercial Corporation or NCCC. Most of their Malls, Supermarkets, Department Store, ChoiceMarts, etc. are only found in the Davao Region and Palawan only had 1 NCCC Mall
Here in the Philippines, outside of the capital, SM malls are the only clean, well maintained, brightly lit, air conditioned malls and their services are great. Other malls are dirty(lots of roaches), over crowded(they stack aisles so closely together), dimly lit(might as well bring a flashlight), and you'll see lots of cracks in the tiles, poor air conditioning, and out of order restrooms. Outside the capital, I wouldn't even consider the other malls as malls. SM malls even have cinema, arcades, and there's a frickin indoor ferris wheel at SM Bacoor branch(look it up). So, long story short, SM Malls are the best malls in the Philippines though that's also partly because most other mall companies are mediocre as sh!t. But in the capital(Metro Manila area), there are tons of other more luxurious malls but what makes SM Malls loved by us Filipinos is that they branch outside of the capital while most other luxurious malls only stay in Metro Manila. SM Malls even branch out to rural areas, something most Metro Manila mall companies never do.
Give back to community. Increase their wages so they can afford to buy at SM. Pay their college tuitions if they decide to return to school. Have you seen their cashiers at their grocery stores in the mall? Many of them should eat more… so increase their wages. They need calories to do their job. You are milking too much from your workers and consumer. At least that’s what I saw while visiting the Philippines
