Ever since I was a kid, I always loved music- especially viola!(yeah I’m aware of the viola jokes, but the instrument had such a human quality and rich tone^^). Unfortunately, I lived in a rural area, so there weren’t any teachers! So when my dad came home with a violin he found at a neighbor’s(a really old tiny one perfect for the 5 yr old me) I decided to try and teach myself! It wasn’t a cello or viola, but worked well. After a while, we moved to another state- I was 11 at the time, and found a real teacher! Her students were all so talented and I was jealous, but that drove me to try harder...it also gave me a lot of stress and fury. To make matters worse, my peers and other teachers told me it would be too hard to be a violinist and then laughed more when I corrected ‘viola’. But my teacher somehow believed I would be determined enough to be a musician! I had to overcome jealousy, mute out everyone else, and compete against myself. In the end, the results were better, and I ended up being accepted in a conservatory in St.Petersburg when I turned 14!!! (Irony. I auditioned for violin with the Tchaikovsky violin concerto for my violin major, and when I played them the Hoffmeister viola concerto for my viola MINOR class they switched me immediately😂)
