How Brain Rot Destroys Student's Life

Have you ever felt like your brain is turning into mush from endless scrolling? Or maybe caught yourself in the middle of an Instagram marathon, wondering where the last two hours went?
We’re talking about something that’s secretly messing with all of us: brain rot. Yep, the dreaded brain rot.
For those of you who don’t know, brain rot isn’t some scary disease from a horror movie. It's what happens when you spend way too much time on mindless activities, like scrolling through social media, binge-watching cat videos, or endlessly clicking on clickbait RU-vid videos. You know that feeling when you’ve watched so many TikToks that you start dreaming in 15-second clips? That’s brain rot creeping in.
Imagine this: it’s a typical Tuesday afternoon, and you’re trying to study for an upcoming exam. You’ve got your textbooks spread out, a nice cup of coffee, and your laptop ready. You’re determined to make this study session count. Just as you’re about to dive into Chapter 3, your phone buzzes. It’s a message from your friend.
He’s sent you an Instagram reel, and it looks hilarious. You think, “I’ll just check it out for a quick laugh.”
You open Instagram and watch the reel. But then, you swipe up to see the next reel. And the next. And the next. Before you know it, you’re deep into the Instagram reel rabbit hole. You’ve watched a dog doing a dance, a cooking hack that you’ll probably never try, and a prank video that has you in stitches.
Time flies when you’re having fun, right? You glance at the clock and realize that an hour has gone by. One whole hour. Your textbooks are still lying there, untouched. The coffee you made is now cold, and you can’t remember what you were supposed to be studying in the first place. That’s brain rot in action.
You try to get back into your study groove, but it’s hard to focus. Did you know it takes about 20 minutes to regain full focus after a distraction? Yep, that means every time you pick up your phone, you’re setting yourself back even further.
This scenario doesn’t just affect your study session. It starts to spill over into the rest of your day. You decide to take a break from studying and go grab some lunch. While you’re eating, you absentmindedly scroll through your phone again. This time, you’re on RU-vid.
By the time you’ve finished your lunch, another hour has passed. You were supposed to go for a jog to clear your mind and get some exercise, but now you’re feeling sluggish and unmotivated. You decide to skip the jog and just chill on the couch for a bit. You turn on Netflix and start watching a new series. Three episodes later, you realize the entire afternoon has slipped away.
The next morning, you wake up feeling groggy. You didn’t get enough sleep because you stayed up late trying to make up for lost time. You drag yourself out of bed, already dreading the day ahead.
And the cycle continues.

@skyfeelan at least that means I’m not brainrotted 😅 not that bad anyway. I avoid TikTok like the plague, and the only shorts I really watch are the Land of Boggs cuz they’re funny and smartly written. And I write music so I kinda need to keep up with my channel. I will admit I’m on my phone a bit, but I still do other things. However, I’ve found it increasingly hard to live in the moment nowadays. I kinda miss the days when I didn’t have an account…

This is a strange thing honestly. Somedays, it's easy to let go, somedays, you just get dragged into a loophole of scrolling for 3 hours, thinking you just spent barely 5 minutes. There's a feeling of guilt, regret of starting to scroll, and yet, it's not easy to stop even then. The tips are really cool though! Especially socializing in the outside world, it feels great, don't be afraid to start a conversation!

Scrolling is basically like a drug. It takes one short form video for you to do it for hours continuously. It's just so hard to control ourselves with these fast paced content, short from videos have a short duration and it will only make us want to make us watch more. It's to the point people are ADDICTED to short form content, like no joke

The fact that some people think porn addiction can cause a depression which is that true, but the other truth is that the endless scrolling also cause the depression for some weird reason. But yeah, fun fact, I'm 15 and I'm glad I'm not living like a child who's eating while using phone or doing something like that. I really hope this helps me out pretty well but I'm glad I've never had any porn addiction since it's against our religion, but what can I say, this is a best video to save you being suffered from the social media.

Some advice that I think will help. 1. Put your phone on do not disturb. - I’ve had my phone on DND for 5 years and it’s great. I think it’s good because you only look at notifications when you make the conscious decision to pick your phone up. If you have notifications on, your phone is constantly vibrating. It’s a stimulus. 2. Ask yourself if you actually want to watch what you’re watching. Did you really intend on watching this or are you stuck in a loop? Keep asking yourself and eventually you’ll be able to catch it and get yourself back to where you were going 3. Rearrange your priorities. Unfollow/unsubscribe from filler things that have no place in your life. Pretty much what this guy says in the end of the video.

Ditching social media was the best decision i have ever made in my 21 years on this earth, I now only use youtube to watch educational content like this video. I'd be dishonest if I were to tell you that leaving social media was easy, it was not, but I figured that mindfulness and spending time with yourself is much better, I have learned so many things about myself that I wasn't aware of, I now work out quite often and I'm satisfied with the way I look. Its true that people in the real world are classified as "BrainRipe" whilst those on the virtual world as "BrainRot" , , but funny enough , these terms came solely from internet civillization and serious people dont know or dont give a shit about these things like [your] parents. Now if you are ambitious(which netweebes can never aspire to be), you can suggest from this that information has gotten wayy to informal that terms nowadays used seem stubborn to old people and in formal cases. However , this level of informality has brought serious problems with mental health which you mentioned , but also we can heal our mental health by maintaining the main class of standard informality probably in the case of talking with a friend outside. That's one of a deeper explanation!

I couldn’t agree more with the message this video sends. I just wanted to add some of my own advice with this comment. It’s so important not to put yourself up to uncomfortably high standards to make your life match the nitpicked good memories people post on social media. You just need to remember that life will never always be “perfect” like social media posts make it out to be and that you as a person still have a lot of time to experience it. When you see other people having fun or being really successful online, don’t beat yourself up about it, because like you, they are human and have their struggles. They just don’t post them so their account doesn’t look bad. You probably wouldn’t either. Instead of glossing over the highlights of others, work on self-improvement and discovery. Hit the gym, go to college, join a club like the video said, travel, or do whatever you’d like to. These experiences are going to help connect you to real human beings and believe me, once you’ve established a good friend circle, you will begin to feel less affected by social media. You will truly feel like you have a place in life. You wouldn’t even care about how much “better” others might be than you because, you’re happy. There’s no pressure on you to do anything. Your life is your own life. Just take your time. Don’t let anyone, let alone social media, dictate how you should live it or how quickly.

This isn’t brain rot for me at this point anymore, I just wanna be done with existence once and for all but I can’t cause I don’t really have the chance. But once I do get a chance I’ll definitely be out. It’s pretty difficult to be productive in a world u no longer want to live in. But I just gotta pass my time somehow you know, just existing through the day. So I just pick up social media for a few hours or spend the entire day staring at the ceiling. It’s so difficult to pass each day; it’s too long. I wish this could stop, I feel guilty about this brain rot but I can’t do anything to stop it. Don’t tell me to ‘exercise’ or ‘eat healthy’ or just ‘get over it’ im so freaking tired of listening to it all, makes me want to quite being here even more. For me therapy helped, but its understandable if you dont want to do that. You could try finding new hobbies or friends that could make you feel less alone, i know it might be hard but you are worth every effort. I havent been in the same situation as you and i couldnt know just how you feel, but I still think that no matter how bad it might be you can overcome it, no matter how hopeless it might seem or how many times you fail. Heck, failing is part of the process and just the fact you want to change is geting you closer to whatever you strive for. I noticed I fell into this vicious cycle after I couldn't keep up with the study, had to retake an exam and there were no time left to relax. Letting yourself a small distraction feels like a simple way to let yourself rest a little, but it's far from actual rest. Social media don't let you take a break, it's just a noise among other information, it only makes fatigue worse. The only time I was productive this year is when I listened one music track on repeat for 8 hours while reading articles needed for my coursework.

One thing I understood to keep myself away from doom scrolling or watching hours and hours of yt is picking up a hobby , like blender or coding , it isn’t too much of a drastic change and I actually don’t feel bad for spending my time on it because I know I’m doing something productive , it has also made stop playing video games ( still play them once in a while but only for relaxing )

I think Vsauce once mentioned: Being bored: Feels long in the short-term, feels short in the long-term Watching TV: Feels short in the short-term, feels short in the long-term Having high-density fun with friends: Feels long in the short-term, feels long in the long-term To feel like you're making the most out of life, do a lot of social activities that you can easily distinguish from each other (sports, then arts, then... etc) IIRC, it's his Time Illusions video

If youtube never added shorts, my brain would still exist I have never scrolled on tiktok ONCE, RU-vid adding shorts was a HUUGGEE mistake. Because youtube is an app many kids use, so if shorts didnt exist. Then brainrot wouldve been much less AND kids would still have functioning brains.

Awesome video dude! I’m right now trying to reduce and possibly entirely stop my brain from rotting. Although my brain is technically less brain rotted than most of my generation, I still want to work on getting my brain to get a better attention span (that’s gonna be hard with my adhd/autistic brain-) and that feeling of being “That girl” (the idea of a girl has it all together, it’s kinda my motivation to become a better person in a not so toxic way). This video was very informative and the visuals were very simple which I enjoyed! Keep the good work up, you’re helping lots of people!

I'm glad that I don't have a rotten brain, I do communicate with friends a lot more than the larger zone of the internet, I also watch informational videos a lot more than just scrolling through shorts, and I rarely use tiktok or instagram or other social media apps that contain short videos we scroll through, sometimes I feel unmotivated, but that's usually if the family makes an arguement that I am hooked in, so, I still have the motivation of looking at good moments, and one more thing is that when I look at great memories I recorded with my phone, it makes me feel happy, especially if it's a video where maybe me and my friends hang out on a week end, or just fun memories I recorded, that's my dopamine, and I also like making random videos (no I'm not uploading them I'm only sharing them with my friends personally) to spend my time doing stuff, but yeah, I do fill in times where I do nothing with stuff that does not rot my brain.
