More generally I agree with many of you that this was a poorly done experiment and I contaminated the results rather quickly by clicking on that first ad. Whether it was Google, Cortana, malicious adware, or something else is entirely debatable and I of course make no conclusive statements about the veracity of my results. It’s five years later, and I’m pretty sure we passed into the realm of video recognition by now. Holding up that paper would be the first mistake nowadays in the experiment setup.

Funny that just 5 years ago we were still wondering if our devices were listening to us while today it's just an accepted fact and we can't do shit about it. And it's actually even worse: face recognition, cameras everywhere, adds popping up while you are just even *thinking* about stuff, location tracking, deep fakes... we are living in the dystopia and I hate it.

I noticed this a few years ago. Even when phone screen was off and in my pocket I would start seeing very specific ads related to conversations I'd had. Later, while on a family trip, my kids and I started talking about random stuff just to see if it would influence the ads on my phone. Sure enough I started getting ads related to every single thing we mentioned (funeral services, leatherworking tools, cruises, real estate investing, lawyers, tennis rackets, korean restaurants,...etc)

0:45 Actually one of the big reasons that happens a lot is because google, along with other big sites and apps, will use your location by tracking when you and other users are nearby. Lets say one of your friends really wants a new pair of shoes. They come up to you and starts talking to you about them, and earlier that day they were searching them up on the internet looking at them. When you open up your phone after the conversation, you somehow also end up seeing ads for the same shoes they were talking about, even though you’ve never even seen them or searched them in your life. Many people who worked for big social media companies or websites says this happens because the app recognizes when your around another user frequently using you and the other users location, then which the app assumes yall two are friends or at least acquaintances. So the app will give you related ads that are like the other user you are around a lot. This might not be true for all apps, but it’s scary to know how far some apps will go just to sell you some information.

I immediately went in and disabled my microphone - your video is 5 years old but I've seen enough crazy things come up that I believe it's still happening!

Definitely does. A friend and I were talking about me needing a new mouse for my laptop. I immediately got adverts for cheap mouseses on Facebook, Twitter, my browser opening screen, and RU-vid. Same thing happens when I once had a long nerdy conversation about lightsabres to a friend and if they'd be physically possible to make... boom, adverts for those handmade lightsabre toys all over my feed..

I was actually talking about this video to my friend (I haven't seen it in years) and all of a sudden it pops up on my recommended page.

Ironically enough this video was reommended to me by youtube a day after I talked about this exact issue with my colleagues.
