I've always felt bad for Baggio. He's arguably Italy's best ever attacking player, but a penalty miss is his defining moment.
@SaintFaria
@SaintFaria 2 месяца назад
One detail that is rarely mentioned is that Italy had already missed 2 so even if Baggio had scored then Brazil only needed to score the next one to win it. The fifth taker for Brazil would've been Bebeto, who was a great PK taker. Baggio seems to carry the blame but Baresi and Massaro should also shoulder the blame for their misses.

Baggio was incredible in this tournament. Everyone thinks of him missing the penalty in the final even though he wasn't the only one. 3 Italian players missed.
@milanidis
@milanidis 3 месяца назад
Couldn't agree more - even though Italy was hard to watch as they squeezed through almost every match (pbbly due to catenaccio + Sacchi), it's a pity to say the least how this miss almost ended R.Baggio's career and deprived him of the legendary status he'd enjoyed prior the WC. It was on legendary Baresi and Massaro as well, but no one mentions they missed
@vitodoriacalcio

He was decisive. Baggio carried Italy to the 1994 World Cup Final. Without Baggio, the Azzurri couldn't get out of the group at Euro '96. Sacchi's stubbornness proved to be his downfall.

I was lucky enough to attend a few games in DC as a 12 year-old. (Thanks, Mom and Dad!) I remember witnessing the incredible atmosphere, buying that wonderfully absurd US kit, and digesting the game played at the highest level...but little did I know the all-time greats collectively on show that tournament: Romário and Bebeto, Baggio and Maldini, Maradona and Batistuta, Pep and Enrique, Bergkamp and Rijkaard, Stoichkov, Hagi, Valderrama, Etcheverry...more stars than even the number on those slick US shirts. 😂

Oooh my, oh my, how many memories! Bra-Ned - definitely the best match of the tournament; Greatest moment: Bebeto's ''baby'' celebration! The biggest on-pitch upset was Argentina: starting from Maradona's eearie scream into the camera after scoring against Greece in the group stage, ending in an early exit after being stunned by the Romanian team led by Georgi Hagi (whose son btw played at the last Euro 24); And no one on earth could see Bulgaria going that far Thx SF!! Take us to France '98!!💪

Great video! Brought back so many memories I was at the opening game in Chicago for Bolivia/Germany, for a game in Detroit for USA VS Switzerland, in home state of Florida in Orlando for Ireland VS. Holland, the quarterfinals in Palo Alto for Romania VS. Sweden and the Semi Finals in the Rose Bowl for Sweden VS. Brazil.... Looking forward to 2026 and to hopefully have my favorite non-US team the Germans Play the US in the finals! 🤣🤣🤣Hey a man can dream right??!!! 😆

@@MB-xq9hu For me, the team of the tournament was Bulgaria. Who can forget that memorable win against Germany? They lost all their friendlies before the tournament, but were a tad unlucky not to get to the Final. Hristo Stoichkov remains their best-ever player. 🇧🇷 v 🇧🇬 would have been a much better Final.

I've just realised something. Every World Cup final that ended on penalties is remembered mostly for the star player of the _defeated_ team. 1994: Baggio is immortalised as "the man who died standing" 2006: most of the times, it seems like fans talk about this like "that time Zidane lost the World Cup final" 2022: Mbappé scoring a hat trick and still losing

I was looking forward to this video. My favorite world cup ever. The first one I watched, the best format (24 teams is the best size imo) the best and most neutral host, best and largest crowds, most iconic moments (both bad and good) and the best result (of course being Brazilian I would say that hehe. But that was a humble and deserving brazilian side, with amazing players) and, of course, amazing games and awesome goals. This one had it all.
@Jose-sy1je

This was seen as the worst World Cup of all time. No atmosphere in a non football country and great games were missing.
@Chadner
@Chadner 3 месяца назад
@Jose-sy1je No atmosphere? It was the most crowded world cup ever, to this day it holds the record. And also coming from the low scoring Italy 90, this one was a breath of fresh air. I may be biased because I remember this one very fondly, but you'll be hard pressed to find a world cup with more iconic players, squads and moments.
@JuanPatricioIzquierdo
@JuanPatricioIzquierdo 3 месяца назад
@@Jose-sy1je the 1990 World Cup is viewed as the worst of all time. They had to change the pass back rule because of it, and they had to start awarding 3 points for a win because teams had no attacking impetus. It had the worst goal per game ratio out of any World Cup, and it was the most turgid and uninspiring as well.
@Jose-sy1je
@Jose-sy1je 3 месяца назад
@@Chadner You mistake crowded stadiums with atmosphere. Most people in the country did not even know that a World Cup was going on. In which country hosting the World Cup have you ever seen anything like that before? In many World Cups I could also mention fantastic games, but Brazil vs Netherlands was probably already the best one in this World Cup. It's true that Italy '90 was seen as somewhat disappointing by many. It simply did not live up to the expectations for many, especially after the '82 and '86 World Cup. But it was still far above the '94 World Cup. Undoubtedly the worst of all time up to that point. And now they want to give it to them again to ruin another.
@Jose-sy1je
@Jose-sy1je 3 месяца назад
@@JuanPatricioIzquierdo 3 points started to be awarded as of the mid 1990s. If that's a good thing is debatable. Backpass rule (one of the few good rule changes in football) was implemented after the 1992 season. Denmark took full advantage of it in the final, which ruined the game. The 1990 World Cup was quite defensive since many players played in Italy at the time. And it definitely was not as good as the '82 and '86 World Cup. It also had the worst final ever up to that date (although in the 1994 final they tried hard to outdo them). But 1990 was a far better World Cup overall. Better atmosphere, some dramatic games and some new exciting teams to watch like Cameroon.

This was a year of extremes for all the Brazilians - from a great loss (A.Senna) to a great WC win. Besides Our Lord and Holy Mary they have 2 pictures on the walls - one of Pele, the other of Senna. According to many, between these two Senna has a little edge as the greatest Brazilian of all time: for the political context of his prime time and for the charity work that still goes on through his family fund - the Ayrton Senna Institute, funding poor children's education. Two great people, two great athletes. R.I.P.

World Cup 1994 was played mostly on sunny sunshine, especially the games in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Because of the hour start of the games imposed by Europe, many games started at noon (or afternoon), especially in the Eastern Coast, like California. This proved to be a key advantage for a team like Brazil the most technically gifted in the world. Aside of that, Brazil met little resistance in their way of winning the tournament, only serious opponents been Holland and Italy. Teams like England, France, Yugoslavia didn't even make it to that final tournament, while Argentina lost in the 2nd round.

Sacci did not form his team around Baggio. He built it in spite of Baggio. My biggest pet peeve about this tournament was how Sacchi made Baggio the 5th pk taker. He should have been first due for o his hamstring. Making him fifth cooled him off. IMO

There were more things that ruined this World Cup. Hosting it in a non football country where people didn't even know what they were watching. There was zero atmosphere, the fields were bad, temperatures were often too hot and it lacked big games. Many teams such as Germany and Italy disappointed. What's telling is that nobody in Italy thought they played well, yet they almost won it.
