How Breaking Bad Brilliantly Uses Color to Tell a Story

Breaking Bad is celebrated for its sharply defined characters, symbolism, and exquisite writing. But this is also a story that is told with color.
Nothing you see in Breaking Bad is an accident. Every piece of clothing, the colors of the backgrounds, the props--all of them work together to tell a single, cohesive story. Every color in the show has a symbolic meaning, every character is associated with a color, and their relationships in the show are even defined by their position on the color wheel.

I remember reading a comment about the color thing: Marie no longer wearing purple, or having purple in her house after Hank's died, literally represents the "color" in her life has been taken away (Hank's death). It added such a tragedy on rewatches of the last two episodes.

Great point! Although I don't think he's ever associated with black, and if you watch Better Call Saul, that sort of makes sense with how he, at least at first, tried to be the good guy. He's a good guy struggling with evil, while Walt is an evil guy struggling with being good.

Interesting. I'm sure he has some color themes at various points in the show. But if it's true that he has no most prominent color, that may actually be a reflection of his character. He's a fraud and a phony. His loyalty is fluid and only dependent on who is the highest bidder (or the least likely to get him killed). I've yet to start watching Better Call Saul so I'm sure we learn more about his character there.

I always thought that blue represented a person who was harmed by Walter's actions. Skyler wore blue until she joined him in the business. Skyler is floating in blue water when she tries to drown herself. Jane wore blue when she was buried, and her father discovers her body wearing a blue shirt. He's wearing a dark blue cardigan when he crashes the planes. All the students wore blue at the memorial for the flight crash. In the fly episode, Jesse is bathed in blue light. Even Walter wears blue when he is overcome with guilt for his actions. Lidia always wore blue and was killed by Walter. Everyone who uses his meth is poisoning themselves with a blue substance. Mike is in a dark blue car when Walter shoots him. Walter's fake confession DVD that would destroy Hank was in a blue case. Walt was wearing a blue shirt when he got "caught" and the fiasco that followed. Elliot and Gretchen are wearing blue on TV when their company stock price dips after Walter got publicly outed as Heisenberg. Elliot is wearing a blue shirt when Walter threatens to use a hitman if he doesn't give Walter Jr the drug money. I always thought Gus wore blue when he was blown up, but I guess some people see purple. Anyway, great video!

this show was not just entertaining, it was artful. i try not to think too hard about the details or symbolism on the first watch, but it’s hard to ignore in mainly artistic episodes like fly, hermanos (not a bad thing). i loved how everything actually had deeper meaning, it wasn’t just some cheap bloody action and yelling. i felt proud for noticing when skylar started wearing more green when she started actually laundering money. i also liked when skinny pete gave jesse his hat in the movie, because it wasn’t just to help him disguise himself, but to show respect and sincerity. he even says out loud jesse is his hero in case people didn’t realize what the action meant

That kinda shows how he's hiding his green greed with backgrounds like a blue sky or beige copy of the constitution to make himself look better to clients, but also unpredictable to the audience.

Interestingly, Marie also often wears yellow, usually as an accent colour that compliments the purple she always wears. This might be to symbolise the fact that she has a lot of the same character flaws as Walt, but without taking things too far. Recall that she enjoys taking on new identities that make her feel powerful, she likes to lie and take things from people just because she wants to and finds crime thrilling, same as Walt. She also comes off as a bit disingenuous and manipulative, which Walter is as well. The difference is that in her case she steals silver spoons and tiaras, as opposed to selling drugs and killing people, so the effects of her bad tendencies are on a much smaller scale, just as the yellow usually appears only as a pop of colour.

I even feel song selection is just as meticulously thought through as the colour selection in this show. Think about it, the song at the very end when Walter dies is called "baby blue". As said by Vince Gilligan, this is clearly indicative of what this show was all about- a blue meth business. If you look at the lyrics more closely, it starts with "guess I got what I deserved", meaning that Walter's death was inevitable right from the start of this show. The song also has the lyric "my special love for you, my baby blue". Clearly, cooking crystal meth was something, really, the only thing that Walter liked doing (he even confesses this to Skyler when he meets her for the final time).

One of my personal favorite things about Breaking Bad that’s pretty niche is how well it captured its setting. I grew up in New Mexico and frequently visited Albuquerque due to having family there, and there are so many little details in the show that really show care with how they made Albuquerque a part of the show, from phone numbers with a 505 area code to the food they eat to the way they talk about the area. This is particularly impressive when you know that, like many other shows and movies, they only chose Albuquerque because of the tax breaks the state of New Mexico gives to the film industry. They could have still had it take place in California and just filmed in NM (that’s happened before), they could have just superficially included the city, but they really committed to the details instead.

@@toxic-spammz1478 that’s true. I recently rewatched the series and I’m conflicted now. I still don’t think he was inherently evil. I think that maybe the point of the Walt’s character arc is to show that we are a product of both our problems and how we choose to overcome them. And maybe good and bad are subjective. Because the old Walt gave up on his dream in favor of stability and thus lost out on the rewards of the company he’d helped create. He settled, in his mind, for a life of insignificance. And in the end, he was rewarded with cancer. But when he began breaking the law and hurting people, while it was perhaps temporarily fulfilling, it ultimately cost him his family and his life. No matter what he did, he lost. But still, I think the argument could be made that the problems he faced were exactly what cultivated his ego, and that his ego became a self defense mechanism. And while it’s no excuse, it is an underlying motivation. Yes, he did it because he wanted to. But he wanted to because the alternative life was to be walked on, ignored, and hurt.

I was writing a script of my own and read it in a reading group. And the one thing that had me scratching my head a little was people thinking it was odd to describe what the characters were wearing. And in my mind, all I can think is, well...this show. The very intentional, specific attention to the detail of what everyone is wearing. That's something that the writer/creator is clearly taking into account. And it goes a long way to subtly help tell the audience what's going on beyond the words and actions, as a way of further cementing either who someone is, or their changing nature over the course of the show.

It doesn't matter if they intended it or not. Because of the Death of the Author concept, the artist's intentions are no more important than anyone else's interpretation of something. Everyone's interpretations are valid, even if the creator of the work of art never intended for those meanings It what makes art so fun to discuss. Everyone's interpretation is equally valid as long as they have good reasons for it. It means we can discuss movies for hours at parties, talk about what meaning we personally took from certain songs or albums, that sort of thing As it happens, the colour thing in breaking bad was absolutely 100% intended by the creators. They've confirmed as much, and it explains why you can so often see the HTML color codes for these specific colours written on things in the show. But even if they didn't intend it, if someone can explain why they think the colours have these meanings with a good argument and evidence, then it's a perfectly valid interpretation either way Art would be a hell of a lot more boring if we couldn't take our own meanings from it in this way. Once an artist is dead, that would be it, you could never discuss it anymore, we couldn't talk about say the meaning of Mozart's music or Shakespeare's plays, because they're dead, so we can't ask them what they mean anymore. But because of Death of the Author, we can find our own meanings even if they weren't intended by the artist, and so it makes the world a much more fun and interesting place

Composition and positioning add a lot to a shot! For example a character being framed above another character may represent authority over the other character, a close up shot may provide a deeper, personal connection to the audience, a wide shot of a character may tell the audience the character feels lonely, or a symmetric shot like you suggest a feeling of stability and balance. Composition can communicate a lot of subtle information to an audience and there are a million ways to do it. I hope this helps

Walt devoted a lot of time to earn Skyler's affection. She was the best thing in his life. Once he was in the meth business, his drug was the purest on the market. He was proud of his creation. 1:42 The background is also color-graded in yellow, and Krazy Eight AND Walt are dressed in yellow.

It's incredible how they managed not only to evolve their characters' personality but also their visuals, every single detail of their clothes having a specific meaning which constantly contributes to the series plot. Bro wtf it's just amazing...

Another thing that hasn't really been talked about much are the colors in relation to where they're worn. Obviously Lydia with the red nail polish and Walt with the "I am the one who knocks" bit are good examples but I think there's more to it. The way that the colors of clothing are worn in layers is also something to touch up on more. I think that coats represent what someone is like on the surface, shirts represent one's desire/emotional state (like the good example of Walt wearing a brown coat with a yellow shirt), and inner-shirts, neck-ties, other hidden articles of clothing represent the core of a person's being. Gus's debut started out with him wearing a yellow shirt, brown pants, and a black tie. On the surface, he is a grounded (brown) businessman (yellow) though at the core of his being he is mysterious and secretive, and his life revolved around power through a lot of death (black-tie).

I found this video because I'm currently rewatching Breaking bad, and two and a half seasons in I'm still a little obsessed with a scene of the first chapter. When Walter faints for the first time due to his cancer, he is working on the car wash, and as he falls to the floor he is looking to an attractive red-haired woman dressed with a emerald green dress, and I was obsessed with the meaning of that. With the information of this video I can work on my own theories, but I really want to know the meaning of that character on that scene.
