Just for clarification.....Star Trek TNG ended in 1994. South Park didn't begin until 1998. I suppose they could have "bumped into each other" while Brent was filming Insurrection, which is the only possibility, since the South Park film came out the next year. That said, he strongly implies that they "bumped into each other" during the filming of TNG. Also, Conan wasn't "really new on the air" as Spiner claims. By 1999, he had been hosting Late Night for 6 years and he was hugely popular.
That last point is why I questioned the validity of Spiner’s account of what happened. I didn’t even know there was a four-year gap between shows. I also question why they have a studio lot for an animated series and how they could have possibly animated and approved a scene in five days. The SP creators are known for their last minute antics but a film production is so much more than the two creators, no way every single executive producer would okay that, especially taking into account how new they were
What about Nemesis? Also look into what other projects Brent Spiner did with paramount at the time. Looking back on a long career can be fuzzy. Go ahead, keep your expose coming.
Kinda disappointing to see that the most liked comment on this video is one siding with the person who was the most obviously dishonest. Like another commenter said, there a huge gap between the shows he claimed were filmed next to each other and Conan was on the air for over five years at that point. But also, he speaks of their studio in Santa Monica. I’m pretty sure they create the show out of that studio. Since the show is animated, they don’t have to film in the traditional studio lots because they aren’t filming anything. These guys had also been on the air for only two years at that point, with an animated medium you can take more ownership but they still need to rely on producers/companies for distribution and clearance. You can’t record sound for an animated scene that’s dropping nationwide in five days. You especially can’t proposition someone to come in at a later time to record sound for an animated scene that’s dropping nationwide in five days. The MPA was established in 1922
The only retribution is that Conan should have been cast to be Data on "Picard"🤣🤣🤣 imagine seeing CO in the Data makeup doing a horrible version of his mannerisms
I know the South Park gang was notorious for being last minute in producing their TV episodes, but I highly doubt Spiner's story of recording his voice days before its release is accurate. This was before the digital age, so we're talking about striking prints from a negative, then mass producing film canisters to be shipped out all across North America.
My instincts are: Conan/Matt and Trey are closer to the true story, but it's possible that both sides have misremembered (or possibly embellished, maybe both) the facts a bit for whatever reason. What they agree on is all we can possibly confirm, but for all we know it could be a big joke on all of us, but probably not. Maybe Brent was contacted by Matt and Trey five days before they locked the picture, and could have been wrapping up some loose ends while they had time to do so. What day was the movie completed? Does anyone know that information? Didn't they change the movie drastically before they resubmitted the finished film to the MPAA? Could they have run into each other somewhere, Brent forgot the details, and he just made something up? Honestly, speculation is a fun pass time, but if I actually wanted to settle it, I would try to find out in as noninvasive a way as I could. I don't, but if anyone actually does, cool.
I believe Brent Spiners version more, especially because he mentioned how last minute it was and knowing theyre notorious for pushing things to the last possible second they can, but either way good to see they all had a sense of humor about it. Also that late night, threes a crowd video was so well made and i absolutely loved it, i was born in 1995 and always loved the old talk show clips so it was great to see the background and made me love David Letterman even more. Keep up the great work, my favorite new channel!
Also the Matt and Tray interview, it really sound like they just thought it would be fun to get a random voice for Conan and then make up a story about it.
with all the controversy about this movie and having to get it approved by the MPAA I highly doubt they were still doing voice over work 5 days before the film opened, not to mention conan was starting to get pretty popular by 99.
I'll give this to Conan -- I think there's almost NO WAY Johnny Carson would have tolerated that! He was famously thin-skinned and would not have liked being made fun of that way. Yeah, I forget South Park:BLU. I really need to pick it up someday. It's funny that I have the soundtrack but not the actual film which I DID watch in theaters. I thought it was hilarious at the time. South Park's just kind of there now like The Simpsons and I wish it had ended on top.
Telling people they got Brent Spiner because he said he does a perfect Conan is funny and sounds less hectic than scrambling to get an actor last minute for a movie that comes out next week. They'd probably have gotten Conan if he was an LA based host, but they didn't have the budget to schedule and fly him out, so they got Brent and it's forever been funny since.
Since they got Brent Spiner to appear on South Park i think Trey Parker & Matt Stone SHOULD have gotten William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Leonard Nimoy & Michael Dorn (who wanted to appear in South Park) to appear in South Park too.
Conan's version doesn't seem plausible. Trey and Matt wouldn't cast Spiner and write Conan into the movie without ever having heard the impression first.
I think Conan's point is that they do exactly that. They seem to be Trek fans so maybe they were happy to cast Spiner. Remember the disclaimer on all South Park episodes that "all celebrity voices are impersonated badly".
A little, but I guess he is being paid to be that way, to entertain, on the panel, to be the star, put on a show, be larger than life. He can’t just sit there being humble.
Brent Spiner is a mildly amusing (although, after about 5 episodes, thoroughly annoying) sidekick type guy who thinks he’s a superstar, because: Trekkies.
