I'm a UK resident, the British make out I'm paranoid, but I just view it as pure embarrassment. Like the embarrassment you'd feel when the toilet is blocked up with a curling turd and its not my fault.
Mate I'm from Manchester, England and i can tell you this is just describing people from central London fuck why does every foreigner think britain= only London!!!! Only a Londoner would think that britain is the best country in the world And pretty much all the other stereotypes mentioned here only apply to londoners
Yeah I live near Manchester and it's a shit hole!He should do a video with everyone from the north west and compare the stereotypes with the ones from London.
You complain about stereotyping and yet there you are stereotyping. North England is greater than the south in my opinion and it would thus seem that England is the best country in the World if you saw the country life.
Hi. This American wonders where someone from England would go for a similar video if they came to my country? I'm betting it would not be where I live. Everyone in my country is not like someone from New York, Los Angeles, etcetera. I'd be willing to bet those are the cities where an interview would be filmed.
Angela Sedgwick We grow up thinking Americans are stupid lazy gun slingers You might have grown up thinking British people are posh stuck up and clever If we went to New York or LA it would actually disprove that stereotype of Americans And this guy in the video only went to london where people can be very much to the stereotype. I get what you're trying to say but my point is and was from the start, go somewhere that gives you actually something to learn, in other words, go somewhere that disproves the stereotype!
I love how when you watch the video on what the English think of Americans they talk down on us for thinking big of and being proud of ourselves and of our country yet they think MUCH of themselves as well.
Football_is_my_life oh no never, that's why I was talking about everyone who participated in that video, so what I took from it was that not ALL do, but the majority yes. :)
I've watched several of these videos. I'm from the USA. We Americans likely see ourselves much the same as British. By the way, I have several wonderful friends from England; those friends all tell me that I'm quite cheeky. I can't wait to visit them. They've lived and worked in the states for a bit. Two are in the process of either moving back home, or getting resettled at home.
I could see that bloke's head at the end, cogs whirring going "something other than you're black, something other than you're black!" Banter's difficult with first impressions and acquaintances, you need to expose personal weaknesses to each other first so they can be exploited really, safe in the comfort of friendship. Us and them, it's the difference between banter and insults. There's the in group and the out group, but there's also the out-out group. It's perfectly fine to take on national stereotypes of strangers, but not personal flaws (basically physical since it's all you've got to go on). As for pride and patriotism, I don't think the responses are particularly representative there. People might think as individuals they're amazing, but they don't tend to think that of the nation as a whole. I feel that, rather than better than everyone else, perhaps above it all is a better way of phrasing it. But then that's always betrayed by the pettiness that goes back to the "us and them" thing. Perfectly fine for us to denigrate ourselves, but if anyone else does we'll turn on you.
Oh look at Cardiff. How I miss u so. I am American and lived in Wales. Let me tell you that the Welsh people are so nice & friendly. I could not understand too much the language on the north of Wales :), but they were still nice and humble people. I never had problems with the British people as well. I love how the English women carry this strong character :). Over all I miss it. P.S. I miss welsh cakes & the cheese and onion sandwich's from tesco :(.
The word 'banter' is more commonly associated as a British used term, and after talking to other Americans, they've even said that banter is used a lot lot more in the UK.
DaWhiteWolffie in understand what you mean but if you come to England I can guess it is used over here a lot more, and has a lot of different interpretations
I'm driving two young English gentlemen to the Philadelphia airport back in the 1980s. They are admiring the Pennsylvania countryside and commenting on how much it resembles their homeland. I infom them that many of the areas have English names do to the early English settlers. I add that the area has a lot of history. Without cracking a smile, the one young man says (somewhat sarcastically), "All 200 years." Cheeky! I was surprised that in this interview asking the British how they view themselves, no one mentioned the one thing in which they could have clearly boasted..... the Beatles!
Been years since I lived in England but back then tea was like their crack. They were either drinking it, getting ready to go out and score some or wondering if they heard another family member putting a kettle on. And they though we Americans were animals because we used tea bags... But that was years ago, I've heard they now take their crack in bags. "Anyway I can get it Luv."
obesitytravels I lived in England from '65-'67. Tea bags were not "always viewed as the best invention". "It was Tetley in 1953 that drove the introduction of tea bags in Britain, but other companies soon caught up. In the early 1960s, tea bags made up less than 3 per cent of the British market, but this has been growing steadily ever since." www.tea.co.uk/the-history-of-the-tea-bag
dimbulb23 tea bags were invented by the Americans in the 1800s. They were used frequently. During the war they were fazed out for the original tea leaves (because they could be reused several times so it helped with the rationing). It takes people a while to change but we all accept tea bags as the best thing since sliced bread!
Love being English, We can take insults, laugh at ourselves, our spirit can't be broken as proved in ww2, We can take any crap from any countries and laugh it off, We play fair but if anyone messes with us they will very quickly wish they hadn't. XD
+Fighting Force You can't compare the Brits of WW2 to the Brits of today though....that was a fucking long time ago. And modern day Europeans have been wussified too. Also, are you trying to take credit for WW2?(in your last sentence) As it is believed by many historians that had the Germans went on with operation sea-loin instead of operation barbarossa, the brits would have been easily defeated. Germany was up against almost the entire world(German allies were either incompetent in case of Italy or too far away to be of any help in case of Japan). I respect and like Britain(you Brits are well respected here in Pakistan and Stephen Hawkins is one of my favorite scientists) But I get annoyed when you guys try to take credit for everything under the sun(no offence intended).
+Omair Iqbal Nope, you have the wrong end of the stick. He(?) is saying that the British had a terrible time during WW2, which came so soon after WW1 but that our spirit was not broken.
+solatiumz But if the Americans hadn't hd joined the allies, then Germany would have taken all of Europe, while Japan would have taken over all of Asia.
solatiumz OK well we came into the war because they attacked Pearl Harbor. We gave Russia trains, tanks, and jeeps to keep them in the fight. The British attacks against Germany were not going very well and so when we joined together we started beating them, not to mention the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan was the decisive factor for Japan to surrender.
+eve khan I am from New Orleans in the U.S. and I absolutely cringe when I see anything about my city on T.V. or internet. Just as it is here, they pick the worst people to interview, and stereotype everything! They try to portray us all as Cajuns with alligators roaming around, and Mardi Grass parades all the time lol. It's hilarious!
@@rachstone9491 cheaper house prices are always said by people from London,or other parts of England but they may want to mention at the same time, that the reason why people in London ALL get paid more than the rest of the country, if they don't They will get pushed out to the places your talking about cos that's where the council /cheapest housing is, very often substandard delapidated ,and then the only people who are beneficial from that is the people who own the land (Westminster)it's exactly what it is happening to the poorest people in Wales but it's just in a different type of landscape, the Gentrification=Urban Sprawl , that is why It's so cheap to live in parts of the Welsh (and though I don't know I Imagine it's pretty similar up in Scotland),It is always why the English in Southeast specifically countryside is a Jewel of the country, and parts of the South Wales Valleys are only just coming back from economic ruin, So all I'm saying house prices are always related to average wages of the particular area so actually the reasons for Some Welsh and Scottish housing being cheaper than Some parts of England is cos they are areas of lower economic development than other house prices correspond with income and tax band (not how nice is the house it's how nice is the area)
"English thinks themselves being superior!"..wow thats how Winston Churchill thought.. Their cheeky and banter stuffs are called Racism in America.. Politeness of English people🤔 seriously?how come I see different characters in UK big brother show?? As an Indian lived in both UK and USA ,I feel Americans are most friendly and welcoming people compared to UK citizens (except London,as it is a metropolitan city)
I m a French guy who plan to live in Uk and it s so funny to see the thoughts from British people about them . I like your videos Yafa ! By the way you look like me hahaha
HI yafa, I don't know how to recommend a video idea that'll get your attention but I was wondering if you could do How Germans think of Argentines? Since we Argentines are really close allies(from WW2 and present) and I have never spoke to a native German person I wonder if you could interview people in Germany of what they're views are about Argentines or Argentina.
American translation: Banter means to "give someone shit" or give someone a "hard time" but in a joking way. Cheeky means "smartass" "sassy" someone with a bit of a slight attitude.
I'm American, and I could listen to the British speak all day! I LOVE the way they speak. It's strange, but I have always heard the words "banter" and "cheeky" since I was a child. Do other Americans really not know this? Nando's sounds a bit like "Popeye's" (a fried chicken fast food restaurant) here, with the chicken and spicy rice (my guilty pleasure) :p
The cheeky thing about Nandos is that it places itself a cut above fried chicken because it's branded as a Portuguese restaurant doing authentic grilled spicy chicken. The fact that their menu is covered cheeky British humour is how they say with a wink "yeah you've really just gone for chicken, fries and bottomless soda but let's keep it our little secret ;)"
I recommend those whom have not yet seen "The Patriot" (with Mel Gibson) to watch it. Roughly half way in Mel Gibson's character use the phrase Cheeky Fellow (in dialog with the main general).
Most of this applies mainly to central London. Go to other parts of the UK and it's somewhat different - for better or for worse. I'd love to see a video where Americans listen to local accents from around the UK. I think to a lot of Americans, London is the UK.
What I notice was that you leaned in to close for a comfortable public personal space of the British. So you see a lot of them, especially ladies leaning back. It might be ok in Spain and other more physically open nationalities.
therebinthe queues are normally not that long here tbh, its just an alternative as to how many people just walk up to the till, even when there are other people waiting (I always get really shocked when I go abroad and people queue jump, it just goes against all British morals...).
I must be living in a bubble or something as cheeky nandos isn't something I've really heard before. To sum up us Britt's.. we are allowed to take the Mick out of each other. But we really don't like others doing it.
You went just to Kensington to get an impression of the British?! Absolutely, it should be in there but that's the very richest out of the UK's 650 boroughs. Those are not the global 1%, they're not the 1% of Britain, it's the 0. something %.
Cynical, stubborn a lot of Brits seem to think we're above everyone else but we all know that's not true, did I mention self deprecation? yeah we do that a lot, erm mostly stiff upper lip is about right, where I'm from up in Yorkshire blunt but friendly
I don't find any country to be superior to any other. Brits do have good things and some bads ones too as a whole. But after watching this video, one could summarizy it as "how perfect the british think they are, and how differently other countries perceive them".
I livee in uk and in my opinion most British people I've met are cold, filthy, sarcastic, polite on the surface but rude the moment you turn around, they think too high about themselves and a lot of them are racist even if they try not to show it. However the older people are really polite and nice. Of course you cannot generalize when coming to an entire nation but I am not really fond of them
Credo. I think you're a complete twat! No one is making you stay here??? I would think by the way you insult the British you're probably jealous. And you come across as being two faced and rude. I bet everyone hates you at work?
The first part is pretty much upper class London, apart from the tea and being sarcastic it's not what I was brought up with. You should watch Karl Pilkington he's pretty much the exaggerated English working class man
As an American.... I don't pay attention or care what they think of themselves as English.... or how they view us as Americans. I'm polite and professional, and I always have a plan to eat everyone for breakfast if they piss me off.
i mate a exchange to london..... intresting.... the only thing i learned eu ppl= move out of the way duck themself and go like snakes ppl from london= dont move out of the way ram into the othee person and shout "sorry"
They seem to express a level of concern pertaining to our presidential elections. Wouldn't blame them, to think that the next leader of the free world could be trump.
Yeah, that's around Sloane Square, isn't it? This is like basing your view of the US on chatting to a few residents of the Upper East Side of New York.
You know, watching all the videos about what one country thinks of another, I had the same thought. We stereotype entire countries, but WITHIN those countries are many different cultures. I live in New Orleans, and have hardly anything in common with say, a person from Idaho LOL! COMPLETELY different way of life and speaking.
I like those UK citizens who have good humour and friendly like Charlie Chaplin,Mr.Bean etc..But Im very disappointed with leaders like Winston Churchill..It's because of their colonialism we Indians were the victims..Just a honest reply. No hard feelings on anyone 🙏
The Only British StereoType I Hate Is The One About Our Teeth, Like Bruh xD Yeah We Have Fucked Up Teeth But Not Many, Only A Small Percentage. Fucking Pisses Me Off LMAO
As a British person I can say honestly that us British people in the kind of younger generation (well where I'm from which is Hampshire) don't think that we are the best country in the world😂 Infact a lot of us say how shit our country really is 😬🙄
I think this would have been a lot more incisive if you had asked people from different parts of the UK what they thought of each other. you could have asked English Northerners how they view Southerners, Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish for example. In the video, you asked middle class Londoner's how they viewed themselves rather than British people from other parts of the UK. You did the same with the Welsh. Why didn't you ask them what they thought of the English, Scots and Northern Irish? You may have got some interesting answers. They are all British after all. And the questions could have been a lot more creative....asking a million people what a Cheeky Nando's is isn't very inyeresting considering it's always the same answer! But you did help to reinforce the,American stereotype that,Americans know nothing about other countries. Anyway mate other than that...it wasn't 'alf bad😃
