In the manga, Buutenks was owning Gohan for the entire fight. In the anime, they did an interesting shift in the battle. At first, Gohan was holding his own against Buutenks. However, Gohan began losing ground after Buu started to chip away at his confidence. I always liked that because it showed that Buu was utilizing the Piccolo in him to mess with Gohan's power. That makes a lot of sense because remember Gohan's doubt after getting his arm messed up by Super Perfect Cell caused his power to drastically drop until Goku was able to talk him back to his senses. Piccolo was there to witness that! Also, Piccolo trained little man for a year in the Saiyan arc then 3 years with Goku because the Androids showed up. Green Man knows how to eat away at Gohan's mental stability during battle. Buu even threw in some low blows like "Trunks thinks your a cowardly deserter just like your father..." and "Your little brother wonders why YOU let me take him..."

Don’t forget all the intelligence and fighting experience he got from Piccolo. Gohan really had no chance 💔

My second favorite fight in all of DBZ, the beginning evenness of their abilities, the clear difference Buu eventually shows in their powers. The constant belittling he does to Gohan throughout the fight. From saying stuff like “Goten is so disappointed that you didn’t save him.” “Piccolo taught you better than that.” “You’re letting them all down again.” Just damn the intricacies of knowledge from Piccolo Buu uses to just absolutely roast Gohan while also beating his ass is seriously some of the best in all of Dragonball. And I adore the action as well. Buu clearly demonstrating his full understanding of Gotenks myriad of attacks, from Goten’s kamehameha, Piccolo’s special beam cannon, and the many different types of spontaneous attacks that Gotenks had created memorized from the HTC. It’s just such a good fight. But I know it’s also a fight with a definitely limiting substance. Like there truly isn’t a lot to Buu as a character at this point and he really just comes off as a Cell ripoff, absorbing opponents to make himself stronger and then using opponents own technics against them. It’s why although I love this fight, it’s ultimately very silly and not all that deep character wise.
