It would be very, very rare for any non-Power 5 team to make it to the National Championship game, and let alone win the whole thing. But, in 1984, that is exactly what happened. The BYU Cougars, led by Head Coach LaVell Edwards, went 13-0 and finished with the #1 rank in the AP and Coaches Poll, giving themselves their first National Championship, and being widely considered the last school from a non-Power Conference to win the Title. Their story is very unique, from being a school in a small conference to Champion, and it wasn’t met without any controversy.
