When I was doing my 1st year engineering during 1990, I had this same question, during those days I used to watch Prof Yash Pal’s Turning point a science programme in Doordharshan. Same questing was asked by one of the participant and this same answer was given by prof Yash Pal. Thanks for recalling my good old memories.

If a flight goes above cloud, stays there for 2 hours and land back, it will land in the same place. In that case, how high the flight should go from the land to take advantage of the Earth's rotation and land on different place?
Flight goes above and land backs is somewhat misleading, it is true for linear motion but not rotational motion like earth. This is because the coriolis force will drift the flight and it depends on height. This coriolis effect can be easily seen in rockets.
Thanks for detailed explanations GK. I cannot accept on how fuel is saved in general. If Tokyo to NY takes 9 hrs, the flight has to come back to Toyko and takes 11 hrs. So average is 10 hrs. If one hour (fuel) is saved in one-way (from avg), then 1 hr (fuel) is spent more in the other way. So for up and down 20 hrs of fuel is spent. How fuel is saved. I am thinking the possibility of using 1 flight for one way and another flight return way: basically there are two flights and each can move in only one direction (say if one is always west to east and the other is east to west). Still no idea how fuel is saved overall.
they use the jet stream to reduce travel time(tail wind) but they will not come against the jet stream(head wind). so fuel is saved in one way and no fuel saved(not wasted) in opposite direction. net result in fuel savings

According to us from earth we have directions and up or down. From space it has no directions. Everything is just sticking with the earth. So north maybe below. Think you are putside of the atmosphere, you will get it

You will reach destination with same time (example - if you start (06:00 AM) travel 2 Hours from the point to either north or South - You will reach same time of Origin 08 AM), But you can't feel the earth rotates
