@@ndhickson3599 thanks, I appreciate your understanding. I found a career working in industrial construction. anyone can get a job it doesn't matter what kind of criminal charges you have they don't even care. It sucked at first but now I am a journeyman in a union and I'm making the most money I've ever made in my life and I made so much money last year I paid my house off and bought a new car with cash. I also started a commercial website and have been very successful with selling a lot of products online. The biggest challenge was forgiving myself and accepting my mistakes in life. I try to have a good attitude and work very hard. in a strange way, sometimes I think being a felon made me more entrepreneurial because I had to think of ways to make money and work where are my criminal record wouldn't matter. I also try to thank God everyday for all the good things I have and also to forgive the people who did this to me because I'm not the only person they've done it to. our criminal justice system is very corrupt and weaponized against the citizens of this country.

As someone who was convicted of a felony when I was younger my advice is to take any job you can. It may not be were you want to be but you are in the process of rebuilding your reputation and need to establish that you are a reliable person. Hang in there and do the work. Dave gave excellent advice on having a short and to the point story about what happened if they ask. Most places at least in my area don't care. Do the work and stay the course.

It’s not the interviewer who gets to decide, it’s the company’s HR policy. I have a drug felony for dealing and I’ve gotten several jobs, one of which was after an interview with the regional manager of Ashley Furniture for an RSA job. I was more then qualified and he told me to put my two weeks in and was telling me I was going to be making around $100k a year. Even though he hired me and everyone in the store wanted me to work there, I still got denied the job due to their discriminatory HR policy. He entered a plea to HR to try and get me the job anyway, and they denied it. I’m 22 and currently make less than $35k a year but I want to be able to afford a house some day. I’m going to keep applying for jobs and keeping my head up, but I’m really not sure what I am going to do. I don’t want to have to work and pay rent forever. I really hope something works out soon.

Employers look for any reasons to say no! Although I have never been arrested in my life, I have had difficulty finding jobs since 1986. Why? Too much education(3 college degrees: BS Math, BS Physics, MS Math, went ABD for the doctorate). Most employers have dyscalculia or "math anxiety."(STEM washouts) Many employers are intimidated by me and ask stupid questions about my background. Felons do not have a monopoly on discrimination. I, to some extent, share in your plight. I go by 2 rules: 1) Apply to small companies with no HR department and cannot afford background software; and 2) Be self-employed. Don't waste time with large companies.

consider trades jobs like plumbing, welding, electrician, and fabrication work, but also explore the rural areas. The major cities I don;t think will be accepting to you. Also try oil rigging / rough necking, but that is dangerous work. After I had to perform some inspections on oil rigs (land) in my past jobs, it looked like every one of those rough necks was a felon. I talked to them, they were fine. If you're looking for a career path, I would recommend vocational trades and trucking. You can find free union plumber apprenticeships, electrician or HVAC training, and most trucking companies offer training too, although some may require you to wait a few years before applying. While the pay may not be great at first, some companies are willing to work with you, especially if you have a criminal record that makes it difficult to find work elsewhere. While you're working in the trucking industry, you can save and invest as much as possible, even though you'll be living in your truck temporarily.

Employers pay higher premiums for liability coverage when they have ex-felons, or the mentally-impaired as employees. That's why most jobs for ex-cons are; "minimum wage, any warm body" jobs. You're correct that hiring bodies is a dime a dozen; but quality, and retention are what most "reputable employers" look for. While I was inside I got my GED, & took college level education classes, & vocational classes. I paid for those classes myself, it wasn't "a gimmie". I was released in '91 after serving 10 calander years "day for day" in the State, and Federal Prison Systems. I was on parole, and being double-pressured by both state, and fed parole officers to get a job, "with a quickness", and provide paycheck stubs for jobs' verification, piss-tests, surprise visits, the whole shi**y-works. It was a tough set of years to get through; but I made it. I successfully discharged all my sentences in 2005, and received my discharge paperwork from both state & fed. I also maintained that same employer/job for over 30 years. It can be done but its not easy for anyone, especially those who have a criminal past, or are physically disabled in some way. You're competing for the same jobs as non-felony, high school/college grads, with no criminal records; and they don't have a "Parole Monkey" riding their backs, nor a bad criminal record to slow them down either. They're punks, tricks & smart a**es though, and will make you want to do something stupid to them. You can't though, you gotta remember the goal, support your family/loved ones. If you're a "real convict", you'll make it. Adapt, survive, and overcome. If not, you know the score.

A lot of States have programs where people can remove some crimes from your record. They recognize that as Dave said a lot of people have done stupid things in their youth and they shouldn’t have to pay all their lives for those mistakes. Never put it on the application about 20-30 percent of companies don’t do background checks, myself personally hired an lawyer and filed an expungement with the state, Dave is 100 wrong on this, step one distance yourself from anyone how knows your past family, friends and past coworkers... step two expungement of record, step three never ever talk about you bumpy past, I am 31, close circle of friends and they don’t know my past, the hardest thing to do is family, but in the end it’s all worth it, I have a great job 100k a year house is less one year of being paid off,

I really like how you didn't sh** on that guy. Nobody hasn't done anything that wouldn't result in a felony at some point. The justice system mandates felons to have a job, KNOWING that they can't get one. They do this to keep them in the system, but when you say that to someone who doesn't have a felony charge, you sound like you're making excuses. The justice system really needs to be held accountable for the way this crap is set u,p but they're not.

I was ypung and ill equipped to deal with what pain i was experiencing. But it feels like a lifetime ago. JUST FYI YOU CAN HAVE YOUR RECORDS SEALED OR EXSPONGED GO SEE THE LOCAL COUNTY OFFICE LOCAL COUNTY CLERK AND TALK WITH A JUDGE ON HOW TO DO THAT!; BETTER YET YOU GET ONE FREE QUESTION WHEN CONTACTING A LAWYER ASK A LAWYER IN YOUR LOCAL PHONE BOOK THE BEST ONE ASK HER OR HIM HOW TO WIPE SLATE CLEAN ESP BEING BROKE AG.
