Something I like to encourage people to do is to take advantage of the time during drilling when they are uke. You spend 50% of drilling time as uke! Don't just zone out while your partner does the technique. Keep your mind active, there's no such thing as an unstoppable technique! If you're drilling sweeps, when in the technique do gaps open up? What would you need to do exploit them? When your opponent is coming on top what position are they landing in? How could you move as they come up to get back to your knees or have them land in guard? These are all things to be thinking about and as the drilling progresses (assuming your partner is ok with it) start working those movements in and understanding how to "win" the NEXT battle when you've "lost" the CURRENT battle.
At my gym we do a lot of those 2 minute bouts of just trying to get out of soon control or pass the guard or whatever and it's some of the most beneficial training I get because I get to keep trying different things from the same position and it really helps reinforce the techniques
Failure is the catalyst for growth. In everything. We learn so much from our mistakes. In the debris of a failure lies the seeds of success. They're there if you choose to cultivate them.
I always fish for that underhook or push the face to create space when I'm on bottom side control. My dojo is super old school and has a lot of high level brazilian dudes. Way bigger than me, I usually take a wrestling approach with them. The really hard thing is when they learn your game. I feel like I only know 2 side control escapes using technique. I can buck out and benchpress but I waste more energy and my heart rate gets faster and then I tend to rush moves...
Being new to Jiu Jitsu everyone is better than me. I find that more often than not the higher belts will role with me and then when I do something good or bad they will let me know and they will help me work on that particular thing to make it better or more efficient.
Chewy thanks for this great advice! Time in position! (I always get stuck in knee on belly so I've been starting out with that and getting better!) (amazing how many people love to start off with knee on belly on me HAHAHA)
Hey Chew, great video, but I have a question: I train for MMA, and therefore when I roll, I usually get mounted or get put in a heavy side control. Now, I always think of it to be like this guy can land elbows and punches on my face, so when my technique fails, I always start to panic and struggle to get out. Will this drilling technique also help? (I'm a white belt btw) Thanks for the help!
My honest recommendation is to set the MMA mentality aside in these situations (for now). Try to work on not freaking out and staying calm and breathing.
But honestly Chewy, idk if I like going with people I can beat. When i usually go against them, I try to get a quick tap and then I just kinda mess around. I enjoy the high pressure anxiety feeling because it helps me overcome the same feelings i have off the mat... I love going against people better than me, it helps me perform better and i actually pull off things that i would never do with someone who is not as good as me. To be honest, I thoroughly enjoy getting my ass beat by the high level dudes in our gym and pushing myself to the point I throw up.
@@Chewjitsu haha for sure. Appreciate all the vids man. Been pulling off a specific escape from side control in class the last few sessions. Just started BJJ few weeks ago. Thanks!!
