Pain or swelling around your gum
Clean around the area with a small toothbrush or interspace brush. Even better if dipped in an antiseptic such as Curasept or Corsodyl. This can be purchased online or from any pharmacy.
If you need painkillers, Ibuprofen is usually the most effective (assuming you have no allergies).
1. adult dose Ibuprofen 400mg 3 times daily
Or
2. Paracetamol 1g 4 times daily
For really bad pain you can alternate them every 2 hours
Some people find oil of cloves on a cotton bud rubbed into the gum helps
Sensitive teeth
Sensitivity is a very common- especially to sweet foods or cold drinks, often it is due to overbrushing and the gum shrinking. It can initially be managed by just rubbing some sensitive toothpaste over the area 2-3 times a day. Then nothing to eat or drink afterwards for 10 minutes to allow it to soak in. Can take up to a week to work. If no better then visit your dentist as may be a sign of early decay.
Mouth ulcers
Very common in times of stress. Most important not to play with the ulcer and keep it clean. Depending on its location you can use some gel on it which acts as both an antiseptic and a numbing agent. Otherwise just warm salty mouth rinses 2-3 times a day to stop it getting infected.
Check your toothpaste ingredients, if they contain something called Sodium Laryl Sulphate, or SLS for short, then bin it and get one that is SLS-free. This has been proven to make your mouth more likely to get ulcers. Most ulcers heal within 10 days, if it is still present after 3 weeks then see your dentist as soon as possible.

Ok, i got so much pain in the middle of the night that my jaw and face went numb. After two Panadols I mumbled salt water in my mouth and I can't believe it worked. I was ready to pull out a tooth myself.

I had a pain on my upper last right tooth while eating. I went to the dentist in Paris 10th arrondissement area. she just advised sensodyne paste, but it didn't help much.. i am sure she forgot to do a deep check.. even after doing a radiology. As i am sure there is a tiny fracture or tiny crack somewhere hidden between interior / gap in between the tooth (which is bothering me with pain everytime i eat). I will consult another dentist (not every dentist is qualified to give a right treatment)... I was surprised by her reply (as she didn't treated even after telling her, that it hurts while eating).. very casual attitude.. I later found she has just began her career practicing.. she seemed to be in a hurry for another patients.. There are very few proper dentist who do deep checks & treat perfectly.. I sometimes use baking soda, salt & hydrogen peroxide in small quantities to brush properly all around. It works on a temporary basis. But one should go asap to a Dentist for a permanent solution.

When I was a young adult ( I am now 70 years) the dentist extracted a tooth without any anaesthetic....my fear is so great that I have been unable to visit a dentist for many years since that experience and I have a toothache.....I am so frightened and in tears at the very thought of finding a dentist to go to.....

Where I live dentists are the most over priced compared to the clientele they serve. I had one who wanted to do a 2500 dollar root canal, and I found another dentist who simply used an overpriced filling for 300 bucks.

Thank you for the advice. I had my lower wisdom tooth removed 3 weeks ago. It still hurts in my jaw and the tooth right next to it hurts very bably. I have been taking paracetmol for 2 weeks now. What should i do to avoid the pain?

Sounds like you either have some food stuck in the socket or a "dry socket". I would try rinsing 2-3 times a day with warm salty rinses. If no better in a couple of days then I would return to the dentist who removed your wisdom tooth.

Im planning on getting a root canal done but my tooth pain keeps me from sleeping comfortably, unfortunately the orthodeontist i was recommended to didnt have an opening until february and i can't live with pain. Any solutions?

I would find a root canal specialist (endodontist) who can see you sooner. If you are in London we can see you this week.

@@bowlanedental as much as i'd like to magically teleport and get help in london i live in the states. I've tried salt water, using sensodyne on top, tylenol, and ive been consistently brushing my teeth and flossing for a while now but its just not stopping throbbing. But i believe whats contributing to it is my bad dietary habits like drinking coffee. I want to get treatment but due to having a specific insurance i dont have many choices and 2 months seems not only painful but also probably unhealthy for the tooth.

I would book to see your dentist to find out the cause of the swelling. Otherwise it will keep coming back.

I went to a dentist that I know personally, but not very well. He filled a cavity and for weeks after - I had sensitivity from cold food/drinks. I went back and he suggested my bite was slightly off so he shaved the filling down a little - that didn't work. Now we're three months down the road and I am having severe pain in that tooth that seems to cause pain on the entire side of my mouth. I went back (feeling like a nuance to him at this point) and he was like yeah... you need a root canal. He didn't give me an antibiotic but did refer me to an endodonist. He mentioned there was a chance when putting the filling on that it wouldn't be successful.Ultimately, I feel that he messed something up and doesn't want to fix it, but I could be wrong. I'm wondering if this is ethical practice? Thanks

It a fillings doesn't settle within 6 weeks then likely to require a root filling in order to save the tooth from being extracted.

Best to see your local dentist or hygienist. Start warm salty mouthrinses three times a day and clean the area well in the meantime.

Try and clean it as best you can. Try warm salty water rinses three times a day. Painkillers as needed and book in to see your dentist.

Yes for short term. Use a cotton bud to apply a small drop near the gum of the affected tooth. Need to get to your dentist to find out the cause of the pain.

Sorry to hear that. You can alternate Paracetamol (if not allergic) with Ibuprofen. So every 2 hrs you will be taking one of them. Call your dentist to see if any cancellations to get you in earlier.

So is paracetamol not as effective for toothache? I've just been taking ibuprofen for 12 days (not at full dosage though, usually 2 times per day), and my GP has recommended I switch to paracetamol. I'm booked in for an emergency appointment tomorrow morning either way, but it would be beneficial to know for future use.

If you are not allergic it is better to alternate Paracetamol with Ibuprofen every 2 hours. Then start to stretch the time between doses. Hope they sort out the cause of your toothache.

Thanks Doctor,.. but how about the 3,3,3 rules? It is, 3 advil/ibuprofen pills, 3 times in a day, for 3 day forward.. how much exactly dosis can we(23 age) take for release from this deadly continuous pain..?

All depends on the dose of your advil/ibruprofen pills. Adult dose is 400mg Ibuprofen every 4 hours. I wouldn't take for 3 days. Try and get an appointment with your dentist sooner. Cold compress or ice can help. Also Oil of Cloves,

@@AKIYIAKELLY yes it is.. but i stop before 3 days because , the pain has gone like 30-40 minutes after I take 3 pills, and I continued the 3,3,3 rules until tomorrow I searching further, and ask doctor here,.. so far I think I feel enough, and depends on the doctor answer, it can be different dose for kind of person, and kind of your toothache/pain Hope this help you, and if you face this up, I really-really hope you get better soon.. Actually my insurance is expired and it will one week to restore... can i take ibuprofen for one week one each daily for tooth pain which doctor recommended to do root canal...

As long as you are not allergic to Ibuprofen and have no other medical conditions. Take as needed, try and stretch out the times between doses and book that appointment for a weeks time.

What is good for tooth sensitivity. When cold and hot get on it it hurt so bad. I use all the Toothache stuff. Nothing work. I want it to work for ever not just for the minute. Thanks

You can use a sensitive toothpaste, like Sensodyne. t works better of you rub a small amount of this toothpaste in the affected area just before you go to sleep. Then no rinsing. Try this for a week and if no better go and see your dentist,

Doctor i believe my teeth are horrible u went to dentist finaly after i tried garlic salt medicines etc... he told me he cant take it off before i took antibiotic with brufen for 3 days at least... im on day 15 now i finished 2 packs of augemntin 2 packs of ibrufen and still i feel pain and he told me i need more because he cant take it off like this!

Go to another dentist. One course of antibiotics for 7 days maximum then you need treatment.

Sorry to hear this. For the swelling you can use ice packs. For pain relief Ibuprofen or Paracetamol. Then go and see your dentist to treat the cause.

Someone help, middle of night and no painkiller working, I took naproxen 3 hours earlier, reduced pain but not gone, still hurts a lot. My wisdom tooth has got infected I think and I'm literally dying with this pain. Just pray maybe?

Use warm salty mouth rinses and try and clean it as best you can. Then get booked in with your local dentist asap.

Clean the area really well with your toothbrush, apply some sensitive toothpaste. Then if still bad take some painkillers and get booked in with your dentist.

@@bowlanedental unfortunately for I've lost the one thing that defined me. My smile. I had all 27 teeth removed april 2021. I think around 10 were fine too. But they said for my health I should remove them also. The dentist said the dentures won't fit properly for me cause I lost so much bone. I was really looking forward to being able to smile. Means everything to me, you know?

How about Paracetamol? 1g dose for an adult. Can repeat every 4-6 hours until you get to your dentist.

Great question. Tooth pain is usually acute and sharp and set off by a stimulus such as colds drinks. Commonly this is from exposed roots can be treated using sensitive toothpaste. Toothache is usually a continuous dull ache usually from dental decay. I would advise you see a dentist to diagnose the cause of the pain.
