Uzair Younus is the Director of the Pakistan Initiative at the South Asia Center. He also hosts the Pakistonomy podcast, which focuses on Pakistan's issues through an economic and political economy lens.
Uzair and Ismail discuss problems with Pakistan's political system, and how they have impacted the country's economic system. They also talk about the magnitude of the economic crisis facing us right now, and what needs to be done regarding the IMF and other policies. Lastly, they have a broad discussion about populist policies versus "effective" policies, and what structural reforms are needed for Pakistan to grow and prosper in the future.

Hope these two economists know about word ecosystem. It can’t be created over night. If india has today favourable ecosystem, please understand it took india more than 30 years. China started changing its system 10 years earlier than India and for last 10 years Chinese pace is very fast and India is now entering on the fast pace growth. There is no immediate hope for work. Probably Pakistan has to face one serious shock probably bankruptcy. That’s the only way to sensitise Pakistani public.

I agree with you. But then why are you people criticizing Nehru and congress in general, so much? I do understand there has been some kind of mismanagement and even corruption. But as uzair said, corruption is everywhere. But overall, I think Nehru and congress did a good job. Yet, modi gets credit for everything. Some even say india got real independence in 2014. I personally don’t think that modi has done anything significant yet. When he came into power india was already a $2 trillion economy. If nothing, at least you were not in a situation like Pakistan has been from past 30 years. Idk why majority of Indians are so crazy about modi and give him credit for reforms which as you said takes decades. I think 1991 economic reforms were a game changer for india, not 2014 election to appoint modi as PM.

I have talked about ecosystem which can’t be created over night. Discussing about Nehru or others is part of political discourse and you should have no concern. Nehru or congress followed socialist policies and every thing was created under Govt which has its own merits and demerits. Finally you must be knowing India collapsed in 1991 and reform agenda jointly by Govt and opposition was put in place. Many would be shocked to know that from 1991 India took 10 years to reach FE reserve of $20 billions. No doubt every Govt play it’s role. Modi Govt is little more sincere therefore succeeding better.

@@9Rehankhan19 Nehru dipshit policies followed by the later political leaders bankrupt India in 1991..the thing is Indian heavey industry boomed after the 1991 ..the 91 reforms were Industry centric then came the vajpayee who did the reforms in bank sheet management and the infrastructure then services under Manmohan.. The thing is surely Congress leaders are praised for their good deeds but the demerits it created really sometimes makes everyone scratch their heads..also bjp never capitalise on the wrong part.. whatever bjp make an political argument congress is literally defenseless as the thing is really true..

@@9Rehankhan19 also your economy question..it takes 7% an average for a country to double it's gdp India had $2 trillion in 2014 and by 2024 it would have $4 TRILLION economy.. Also Indian economy works in phases..a high tide and a low tide..the 1991 reforms even upto vajpayee bank reforms the economy wasn't headfast.. under Manmohan it got really fast due to the public consumption and the fdi that came to India started output.. Now in case of modi we had $600 billion plus in fdi in last 8 years the public, co-operate consumption is gonna go up this decade..our banks have tackled npa..so this decade is the real growth decade..the growth in modi times was basically due to wellfare schemes and the government spending

Mr Umesh, Im surprised at your comment about the two Pakistani young men discussing the ecosystem. I understand your inherent disgust at any Pakistani discussing anything interesting and intelligent but let me remind that one of them is the Atlantic Council. Not sure if you knew anything about the group but let me remind you once again that if you were as smart as Uzair Younus you wouldn't sitting where you are at and making these utterly irrelevant argument. So shut the hell up!!!!!!

I respect UzairYounus a lot but please stop saying that deaths were less due to covid in pakistan. At the peak of covid, pakistan was testing less than 30k and this included antigen tests, where as even the state of karnataka in India was testing close to 200k every day. When u don't test at all, obviously covid related mortality will be less.

If Jinnah was alive for at least another five years after Pakistan was established, the history would have been completely different. Jinnah died early and Pakistan didn't even had constitution for as late as 1956 or so. Coupled with that take religion and dictatorships lead to deterioration.

The only thing pakistan could do is sail along with big boat which is adding 500bn $ on average every year to gdp... Tata realised that they can't keep with cheap ceramic of Bangladesh so they do MOU to import ceramic from Bangladesh to huge domestic market in india & export heavy vehicles to relatively increasing market.. just wait for 10 year how SAARC - Western Neighbour will take over our regional intra trade if China could be check market by market forces of west & Asean.. Hope sense prevail in western neighbour too..

Pakistani 'intellectuals' conduct their research in such a way that they always find India in a very bad shape. For instance, Pakistani IT 'experts' went on saying that during the pandemic, India's IT industry suffered a lot and much of the business moved to Pakistan. Ok. Let us look at the export numbers. Nice joke. The host here basis all his research stated that the agricultural sector in India is in a mess. Ok. Let us look at the facts. India is exporting wheat worldwide. In fact, the UN and IMF requested India to not stop wheat exports. Can you guys ever get rid of your hollow bravado and hot air? As on today, your country is very eligible candidate for being christened as a banana republic. Get a life boys!

Two fools discussing the serious topic of economy. Just feeling happy due farmers agitations which was political in India without realising India’s food production and wheat and rice yields which is double than Pakistan. India for last two years giving 5 Kg of wheat or rice and one kg of dal per person per month. India have two years good stock and more than $600 billion FE reserve. If you two want to talk about India better have better data. Pakistan is on the verge of bankruptcy. Lastly you want to bring FDI without knowing the export market and exportable goods and services. Have you examined the impact of Islamic radicalisation in Pakistan.

While I agree on what you said..but I think you are a little more optimistic about gdp figures..it should be around $380 billion dollar.. Also.surely in long run Bangladesh per capita is gonna cross India considering some sections of India wouldn't grow that fast but the per capita isn't gonna cross until 2026-27 ...to atleast what I read...not by much but a narrow up and down of $30-120 dollar at max.. Also the major issues are going to be there for bangladesh once it get out of ldc list and try to diversify it's economy from textile..as some Indian states most backward bihar are trying to have a better textile policy..there might be some good competition we observe.. In short as an Indian I am pretty happy for bangladesh growth .. it's been good
