The Australian goverment was at one time faced with a possbible deluge of illegal and unwanted immigration by people who claimed refugee status after a perilous sea journey in often unseaworthy craft organised by dispicable people smugglers. Since Australia's hard nosed action that has resulted in this current dilemma the sea route to Australia has seen no further attempts by refugees determined to illegaly enter Australia. If the Europeans had been more proactive in protecting their borders they would not be in the invidious position of having their countries eaten alive by the human equivilent of a swarm of locusts from subsaharan Africa. The people on Manus Island are probably so damaged now that they would be extremely difficult to resettle sucessfuly - a risk that the New Zealand government can ill-afford, both financially or socially if they were to have their offer accepted. The Australians are only too aware that for many years New Zealand has become a portal through which immigrants, having obtained PR in that country, have attempted to enter Australia, their planned destination from the outset. Manus Island is a human rights crisis of which there is no doubt, however the Australian people have the unassailable right to decide who they want living in their country with them and to resist, through their government, the likely flood of illegal immigration by people who wish to force themselves onto a determined and reluctant host country who seek to make their own descisions who they want in their country without this being forced onto them.

Australia seems to have no problem helping them as long it does not involve them entering the country. It is a difficult situation. As Australia also has to look at the security needs of its citizens.
