On Saturday May 30th filmmaker and photographer David Jones of David Jones Media felt compelled to go out and serve the community in some way. He decided to use his art to try and explain the events that were currently impacting our lives. On day two, Sunday the 31st, he activated his dear friend author Kimberly Jones to tag along and conduct interviews. During a moment of downtime he captured these powerful words from her and felt the world couldn’t wait for the full length documentary, they needed to hear them now.

I'm happy they showed her hugging her family. Because people are so quick to assume that black people raise their voice they are threatening and unreasonable. But the reality is, that took every ounce of her to stay composed and share the truth. I hope this shows to people how black people just want a fucking fair chance, and for centuries only black people understood that.

I'm a white person that--until now--thought myself to be a relatively intelligent, decently-learned person that paid attention in history classes. Incidents like Tulsa and Rosewood were never mentioned, or even hinted at. I've heard of white mobs and race riots previously, back in the post-Civil War era, but not these, so...I looked them up. For those, like me, who don't know what Ms. Jones is referring to, the TLDR is this: Tulsa was quite literally bombed from above by private airplanes because that's where well-to-do black people lived, and Rosewood, in a _completely separate incident in another state,_ was burned out of existence by roaming white mobs from surrounding towns for Reasons. No one tried to rebuild/repopulate after it was burned to the ground. No one, in either incident, faced charges. In Tulsa, it took nearly 80 years for officials to even _launch an investigation_ into the event. No investigation was ever made for Rosewood. (Edit: Apparently there was an investigation into Rosewood. I misread. It only took 60 years instead of 80.) I'm disgusted. Viscerally, deeply _enraged_ that not only these things happened, that these things were so easily swept under the rug and forgotten about by white folks. White people in power, the school boards and the cops and the politicians, they don't talk about it, because it admits culpability, because it "causes racial tension." _Murdering a town full of black people causes racial tension._ Why the _fuck_ is this not being openly discussed? Why the fuck can't us white people look at the atrocities that our ancestors wrought and say, "That was wrong, we need to fundamentally change"? My words may mean nothing, but: That was wrong. We need to fundamentally change. The whole fucking system needs to fundamentally change. Our inaction is killing people. Has _already_ killed scores of people. I've been trying to see a way of societal reform beyond complete structural collapse since the 10th grade--twenty years ago--but at this stage...shit, maybe it really *should* burn to the ground. We've done nothing to earn it.

Being afraid of a group of white people is your own problem mentally. Most people are not racist or wish to harm you because if they were/did they would have completely annihilated you off the earth. What the community needs to do is learn to trust eachother by socially interacting more. Imagine if I was afraid of you I would want to avoid you as well but thats why this is happening now. Avoidance breeds contempt. The black/white community is divided because we are not taught the proper techniques in schools or at home to deal with racial tensions/differences if we were even lucky enough to have parents to show us love. Ironically in all of this I was arrested as a white person by a black officer because I told him I didnt like him. He interpreted it as a racial thing even after I cleared the air it didnt matter his feelings were hurt and I get a misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

@@atheist28403 Well sure, if your only definition of racism is calling someone a name, or actively trying to hurt them. That's a definition that lets you off the hook, lets you pat yourself on the back, for not being the absolute worst. Great job, have a cookie. I'm talking about a higher standard, about every human's responsibility to work for a more fair and just society. My definition recognizes that as a white person I have benefited simply from being born into a racist society, and that not speaking up and working to fix it is equivalent to upholding and reinforcing it. So yeah, you and me, we have to be constantly working to not be racists. I get that that probably sounds unpleasant and totally unfair. Which means you have two choices: turn your back on it, or pitch in trying to fix a fundamentally unfair system.
@atheist28403
@atheist28403 4 года назад
@@TimMFWolfe *Racism* (n): 1) prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized. or... 2) the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another. Words have meaning. There is no "my definition" or "your definition" there is *THE* definition. Using such strong language (racism, racist, etc.) as flippantly as you do cheapens and weakens the power of those words. "Racist" _was_ one of the most damning labels one could acquire. Now...hardly anyone takes it seriously. Also, this privilege you speak of has more to do with an overt media bias and politically-driven propaganda and pandering. Like most organisms on this planet, pattern recognition is key to our evolution. When the news constantly pumps this "bigotry" narrative, and shows nothing but "white cop kills black man" and "black man kills so and so", blacks focus on the first story and perceive systemic racism; without realizing (or without caring) that it happens to other races as well (e.g. it has more to do with class and SES than with race). Whites focus more on the latter story as a result of in-group biases and (like blacks) perceive these incidents to be much more common than they really are. This is also not racism, this is called (inherent) bias. Also, the stats simply don't back up your claims. Single-parent homes, a devaluation of education, and criminal records attained during youth are the three best predictors of poverty and incarceration in adulthood. By _your_ definition, one can logically conclude that you believe many in the black community to be very racist: "not speaking up and working to fix it is equivalent to upholding and reinforcing it."

Don't forget to add what MLK jr said and taught to your knowledge because I believe most of them have lost touch with their own history I believe. MLK Jr, who was the most visible black spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement explained there is a difference between non-resistance to evil and non-violent resistance. He once talked about the non-violent philosophy, where he explain it as "negros will be able to face dogs and all of the other brutal methods that they use without retaliating with violence, because they understand that one of the first principles of non-violence is is a willingness to be the recipient of violence, while never inflicting violence upon another.".....well I guess that justifies all the looting and riots and vandalism and list goes on using the dead murdered man as an excuse.

@@SM-hc2nz Kimberly Jones knows exactly what she's talking about. Do your research. Stop sanitizing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "In September of 1967, Martin Luther King delivered a speech at the American Psychology Association’s annual convention in Washington, DC. Approaching his fortieth year, more than a decade removed from his most prominent battles and victories, this was King with the sun setting at his back. In the eyes of many he was the nominal leader of a movement that no longer followed him. And he was faced with the choice of whether to resist or submit to the growing momentum of a younger, more turbulent generation. It was his first speech since the bloody summer had come to a close, and he appeared to have evolved on the issue of rioting and looting. He now spoke of it as a necessary act, a stance which stood in contrast to his discussion of riots just a year earlier. He had been resigned to them as an inevitability, but now he was understanding them as a small measure of freedom. “Urban riots must now be recognized as durable social phenomena,” he told the assembled crowd of mostly white doctors and academics. “They may be deplored, but they are there and should be understood. Urban riots are a special form of violence. They are not insurrections. The rioters are not seeking to seize territory or to attain control of institutions. They are mainly intended to shock the white community. They are a distorted form of social protest. The looting which is their principal feature serves many functions. It enables the most enraged and deprived Negro to take hold of consumer goods with the ease the white man does by using his purse. Often the Negro does not even want what he takes; he wants the experience of taking.” - timeline.com/by-the-end-of-his-life-martin-luther-king-realized-the-validity-of-violence-4de177a8c87b

What does burning an autozone or robbing and shooting at Korean immigrants in LA or burning down Vietnamese restaurant in Tampa or nearly killing a random white truck driver, or people driving a Rolls Royce driving up to riots and emerging with armful of designer goods in NY or looting an Ethiopian owned Wireless store in MN to name a few, even communicate if it could be translated to politics? People do not loot seeking justice for George Floyd or getting any tenth of an inch closer to justice for Rodney King or reforming the system, they loot for the loot. People don’t loot or commit arson to make a political statement. So to fight for equality and for your voice to be heard, I believe they need new pair of shoes or a plasma screen tv or an iPhone. How is it remotely sane in ruining someone else’s life by destroying their form of income. It is pathetic and I don’t know how people can justify such acts. Anger is justified but looting and rioting never are.

@@pisto30 And vandalizing, burning small time business will solve all problems? If looting is the "ONLY" solution to have your voice heard "Go big" but spare the small businesses. These businesses are shutdown already due to corona virus and now their shops or restaurants are vandalized and burnt....have you thought what kind of message you are trying to send by harming hard working people? These people have lost their mode of income and are now waiting for insurance agents to give an estimate of the damage.....how will they recover from the loses? Have that ever crossed your mind when you say "Maybe now you'll listen"? Are blacks the only underprivileged and oppressed ones, brown or other colors don't matter? FYI I am not white if that helps. I am honestly with humanity irrespective of color of the skin or the origin but I can NEVER understand how hurting and destroying a common hardworking man or woman could be a protest of equality and a protest to have your voice heard.

Good that you are doing what you can to help. But what most white people don't know or even want to know is that the black people you see protesting in those streets and even looting in those streets are God's children. What I mean by God's children is that they are the very seed of God called Israel in the bible. Israel is not a country or place in the bible. Israel is the name of God's children. Israel is in America. We were slaves in ancient Egypt and slaves in America. America is the present day Egypt and again will be freed from this Egypt as well. Unfortunately, most of my Hebrew brothers and sisters still don't get it. We are here fighting for equal rights in a land that has no interest to do so and has never had. America isn't our destiny. The second great Exodus back to the Promise Land in Africa is our destiny. Their will be another great Exodus for Israel. Just as the first Egypt was judged by God so will this second Egypt as well. But this second great Exodus will be something the world can't imagine right now and will be something so great to witness that they will finally see who black people really are. The Hebrews

Im a white man. I grew up poor as hell wtih two heroin addicts for parents in a Hispanic community that exiled me. I know what it feels like to be hated for your skin. Once in the 6th grade i took a knife to my arm and proceeded to cut the "white" off my right amr in the middle of math class. As an adult i learned quickly that i would never be accepted into the white community because of my upbringing and my unwillingness to play the "game." I moved to Memphis and never fit in with the white populace nor the black. This never really hurt me. I was going to be me and never spread the hurt i felt. I was okay feeling at a disadvantage. Nonetheless, ive always gravitatd towards the other people who, like me, spread no hate and many of the biggest influences in my life are black. I never heard this side of your story told this way. Im in tears and im a grown ass man. I don't know how to fix this obvious problem. I don't pretend to know. I know what im gonna do to help. I will not let hate into my home and I will not allow my children to think that way. My best friend in Memphis is black and he's easily more loyal to me than anyone else in my local friend group. Nationally, the man who taught me the value of education; and thru that saved my life and pulled me out of poverty and off of drugs, he is a Hispanic man; i named my son after him. Despite this being how my life has gone, I feel in debt. I am so sorry for the hate and the evil that the generations of my kin believe me have caused. Im sorry that we have done this. I don't even want to be in the 'we'! But I am not going to try and deny what my blonde hair and blue eyes means. I honestly don't understand how yall managed to protest peacefully in the 60s when innocent blood coated the strees. I couldnt have maintained /remained peaceful. She's right. That word i dont want to be apart of, we, the white person, are very lucky. I don't know how it can be fixed but im not letting hatred based on ignorance into my family's home, our hearts, or our minds in desperate hopes that one day we can heal.
