I see these as an essential kitchen add-on as well as for tank. I have a 6 stage system plumbed under the kitchen sink. Just prior to the RO filter I split off two extra lines - one goes to a water tap on the sink for drinking, the second goes through the wall into a kegerator, where it’s chilled, carbonated and fed back through the wall to a second water tap for carbonated water for drinking, the third line feeds through the the RO/DI filter and into a small under counter pressure tank. Goes through a final polishing filter before ending in a seperate line for filling ATO and AWC reservoirs. Set up correctly these are not just for the aquarium. I do not to get an inline TDS meter and more importantly a float switch for the reservoir end. So easy to forget that the line is open!!

I got so tired of lugging distilled jugs of water. I've had an RODI unit for a month now after a year of not having one. Worth it, though it cost about as much as my whole tank setup.

I prefer to buy my r/o water from my lfs, it not only supports them but its an excuse to go to lfs every month and buy some cheeky corals and fish without the partner there !! ;) having one at home on standby for emergencies such as covid lockdowns etc would be a good idea, but on a water meter and paying for the litres of waste water from using an rodi unit at home it does work out quite abit dearer for us in uk, i will carry on getting it from lfs for now :)

@@Sammy31Dee test it like you test your own r/o water lol, tds pen…. and i like the excuse to visit my lfs, in uk on a water meter i get charged on the meter, so the waste water the r/o unit puts down the drain is pretty close to paying for r/o from my lfs at £1.25 for 25 litres and i only have a redsea 300xl so it makes no difference to me, but thanks for the advice

@@Sammy31Dee you are very much the glass is half empty person, i am the glass is half full type person, i enjoy buying r/o from my lfs and supporting them i can see the inline tds meter there as its a good shop, we are all individuals and we all like doing our own thing. Think you should respect other’s choices abit more, i respect yours having an r/o machine at home.

I have Water Softner system at my house. Should hook up my BRS RODI filter to water (city) before it goes thru the softener system or I can just hook it up underneath the sink using the water that has already filtered thru the softener system? Thank you

When talking about savings . Are you including filter replacement? They can be pricey .
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 2 года назад
A filter replacement kit is only about $30 depending on the kit you go with 🙂 The RO membrane usually needs to get replaced once every 2-3 years for most of our customers and the pre-filters can usually go many months without replacement. DI resin is most frequently replaced.

When I go to flush my system do I need to disconnect it from the DI filter? When I put it in the flush position, it still sends water through my DI filter and it still makes water just not as fast.
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 2 года назад
That usually happens if you have moderate to high water pressure. No need to disconnect the DI stage from your system as there should only be a little bit of water passing through it when you open up the flush valve.

If you're on city water, a 5 stage RODI system will be perfect balance of price and performance for someone just getting started in the hobby 🙂

I'm led to believe that for every 1 lt of RO water this thing produces it throws out 7 lt of water down the drain (unless you can find another use for it !) here in the UK we are on water meters and to use something like that would cost us a fortune !!
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 2 года назад
Not quite. We usually see about 1 gallon of good RODI water to about 2-3 gallons of waste water. You can also run a water saver setup, which will get you really close to a 1:1 ratio with good water pressure.

As much as I want this it’ll have to wait. Setting up my first saltwater tank and the costs keep mounting… nearly $180 for the cheapest option. but I knew it would be expensive. For now though I’m going to use distilled water I think.
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 2 года назад
Hey, fair enough! Distilled water works fine. Try checking with local fish stores to see if they sell RODI water too. It's usually cheaper at the fish store vs distilled water at the grocery store.

@justasimpleengineer96
@justasimpleengineer96 Год назад
@@kickassclone75 I’m somewhere in the range of about 2500 into my tank so far but I am very calculated about where I spend. My philosophy is, do I need it? If yes, then I buy it. Or is it a nice to have? If so then I decide if it really will help me or not and make my decision that way. 180 is a lot of money hence thinking about whether or not do I really need it or not. In the end I bought one and am glad I did!

How can I tell if I need a water softener before the RODI?
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 2 года назад
A water softener isn't 100% necessary before RODI, but if your home already has one, it's best to install the RODI system on a softened water source.
@kickassclone75
@kickassclone75 Год назад
if you can get one GET ONE if you can't your ro membranes will be worn out a lot faster and not produce as well as they could but its not necessary.
