Hey guys... this stuff is pretty serious to me. I want to be able to accurately discern truth in all that I do, so the techniques that Katy taught me here were super helpful. I hope you are able to use them as well. MediaWise has been using the hashtag #IsThisLegit across all social media, so tag them on Insta or Twitter (Where a lot of misinformation happens) and they'll get a team to help you figure it out. Also, the upcoming series I'm doing on Algorithmic Manipulation is going to be a very hardcore look into the inner workings of RU-vid, Twitter, and Facebook. I hope you'll subscribe (bit.ly/Subscribe2SED ) and consider watching this 3 part series with me. I've never done a series like this, so I hope you find it to be as fascinating as I have while doing the research. Thank you very much for watching my internets. I'm grateful.

Important: When that happens, own up to it, and correct your shares/retweets publicly. We can be a much more effective filter together than any of us can be alone.

The biggest problem I see is that the people who are regularly guilty of propagating misinformation aren't concerned about any of this. Their concern is driven solely by confirmation bias. If no false information is found, discard tweet and pretend you never saw that tweet."

@declup
@declup 5 лет назад
It seems to me that the three main news t.v. networks in America -- MSNBC, CNN, and Fox -- despite claims of objective journalism, instead peddle emotion. Outrage and fear are seductive; they capture people's attention. So rather than disseminating dry but actionable information (e.g., long-term statistics and policy minutiae), the three produce dramatizations of sociopolitical conflict: replete with flashy chyrons, foreboding background music, and non-stop chatter of self-righteous indignation.
@r08800

@@bosstowndynamics5488 -- I agree. For various reasons, most, if not all, media sources limit the technical depth of their products of reporting. E.g., they want to appeal to a general audience and they probably suspect a general audience would find thorough treatments with specialized terminology off-putting or unintelligible. I understand why media outlets tend to prefer lighter fare with an affecting hue. Indeed, often this strategy, depending on the complexity and importance of the subject and the expected acumen of the target audience, is entirely justifiable. I do believe, however, that, overall, the media has excessively low expectations of itself and of its audience. People, to some extent, can and should stretch themselves to understand more-technical treatments. That being said, still, to me, the big three seem to be particularly egregious examples of pandering foisted as journalism. I have a simple standard for journalism -- perhaps overly simple in some cases but sufficient, I believe, for most: Journalism should provide useful information -- that is, factual analysis that allows a significant share of an outlet's audience to make informed decisions that will likely improve their lives. Many media outlets meet this standard. E.g., helpful reporting might include weather, finance, and local-business-and-gov't columns in newspapers, consumer reports, popularizations of science, trade journals, youtube videos like this one, and community pamphlets advertising coming attractions and events. Usually, though, at least in my estimation, the big three do not. "Ten More Reasons to Hate Team Red/Blue" and "Prospective Candidate X For Election 2035 Trails in the Polls" seem unlikely sources of practicable information.

@WMDistraction 5 лет назад
This is true, but to be sure, well-known sources that are generally less biased ("unbiased" is basically a Platonic ideal), such as NPR (less biased trending centrist), NYT (less biased leaning liberal, outside their recent op-eds which have been... weird), and WSJ (less biased leaning conservative, outside their op-eds which tend to be aggressively pro-Republican, as opposed to NYT which are pro-progressive/pro-liberal while not necessarily being pro-Democrat, though they do that sometimes, too), are great places to get initial information on something because you can be relatively confident that they're not usually going to publish some absurd version of the truth (again, outside many NYT/WSJ op-eds). The crux of your claim is still true, though: It's generally a bad idea to get your news from a single source, and it's always a good idea to check (reputable!) sources against one another so that you have a better idea of what the story "actually" is.

This is such an important concept that a lot of people haven't grasped. It holds true for media stories as well, even on your favorite news site that seems reputable. They often jump to be first at a story, or write sensational headlines, or use quotes from popular figures in place of data and evidence. It's important to ask the question "what is the evidence" with even the media stories, and find the actual root piece of data to take in.

My general rule of thumb is to never share "informational" pictures/memes. They're almost always incorrect or over-simplified. Of course funny/cute pictures/memes are fine. For information I only share actual articles from reputable sources, and only if other reputable sources are covering the same topic with more or less the same information. As a result I probably only share things on Facebook once or twice a month. My standards for liking or commenting are much lower.

100%. Not only are political memes oversimplified and often false, I go a step further and propose that they are one of the main contributors to the severity of the current political divide. Even when accurate, political memes serve to do only two (very damaging) things: to stroke the ego of those with the agreeing viewpoint, and to present the oppositions viewpoint as a joke that you would have to be an idiot to believe. There is no subtlety, no attempt to understand why people believe differently. According to memes, everyone who does not agree with my perspective is so dumb that it's funny. Humor is powerful, and used in this way it is dangerous.

So I started reading 7 online newspapers from 7 different countries. This helped me realized that most American news sources online are not only 'partisan' but they seek to manipulate your point of view. However, once realizing that, it made me realize that I was not a member of the society those other 7 newspapers were from and therefore, what I was reading SEEMED like the truth but I really had no way of knowing. Therefore, I spend more time in Science and this too bothers me. I take walks around the area and nature provides a peacefulness that I don't fuss over this. So thank you for visiting this extremely important subject!

I broke the OODA loop sim. Set both jets to 5000ms, and they stop fighting. Like an allegory about how if society just slowed down a bit, we may have less internal conflict. And another glitch: set both to 250ms, and they both just go in circles. Another allegory on how the faster we go, the tighter the unending loop. Seems like they stopped fighting again though, since the G's are probably wreaking havoc on those simulated pilots.

@garn5341
@garn5341 5 лет назад
I agree, but if the honest news sources can get you to read the article, by using BS click bait titles, and 'then' give you the facts, that might not be all bad. Although I realize most of them do not do that, most just want the clicks. I only mention this because the people that do NOT care about facts are going to use click bait titles, and due to that they will start getting all of the traffic, and the requital sites, with real news, will start being left behind. It almost to the point the real news 'needs' to be click baity these days. It's a sad game they/we are all playing with one another. And why I think it is so important that people like Destin share information like this. Most people will probably ignore the advice in this video, but for the ones that truly do care, and just didn't know this, it will truly be beneficial for.

3:04 this is a really good moment to mention how important it is to not make the "retweet" decision personal. It's about the content you're retweeting, not you. It's obvious that the topic of the tweet was important to her. Similarly you might come across poor quality content that really speaks to something you care about. In such a case, rejecting that content can feel like you're rejecting yourself, or the importance of the topic that matters to you. But you're not! If the image in the tweet is fake, and there's no sources, etc - it's just bad content. Not sharing it doesn't mean that the issue that matters to you isn't important. If you really need to you can go and look up reputable sources for that same topic and post that instead of retweeting the post with the fake image, for example. So make sure not to make it personal when evaluating if something in your news feed is true or false.

Surely, as you've read articles from both sides of the aisle, you've seen this in effect. You're crazy smart, and you care a lot. I would love to see you talk about the cognitive biases that we fall prey to while reading factual-but-spun information, and offer some tips on what we might do to protect ourselves from falling prey to these "glitches" in mental processing that lead us away from thinking fairly and critically about information we come across. The problem is not social media itself but learning to follow trustworthy sources and variety of biases. Also don't click on ads. But then again it gets difficult when the feed is no longer chronological.

@@LuisAldamiz How many channels do you watch? Like 2? The notion the all channels are biased is totally nonsense unless CNN and Fox is ypur definition of "all". The local Fox of my city does a very good job in REPORTING the news rather than giving an opinion on the news.

@@Leo-jt3tc - I don't watch TV anymore. I quit 18 months ago or so. I get all my info online: it's much much healthier: there is a much wider range of sources and I can more easily select my sources. TV sucks 200%. Fox is worse than all the other channels together, and that is very difficult to achieve, you must admit. They don't "report", they just spit lies.
@LuisAldamiz

@Lord Of Onions - So how do you call the class that owns the means of production? It's socialism 101: there are two classes the haves (bourgeois) and have-nots (proletarians), and by having we talk of means of production, not personal property, stuff you use to exploit others as your dependent workers, to milk other people's work. The terms may be a bit 19th century but they are still standard currency for socio-economic analysis. Of course the bourgeois try to pretend that distinction is less clear cut, so they use made up terms like "middle class" for the proletariat (or much of it) but as long as you do not employ workers, in plural, you are still working class, proletariat, have-not, the 90%.

Of course people like that, but that's what journalistic integrity is supposed to be. Knowing that there's the easy clickbait and not abusing it. Unfortunately if you've had to scour through a lot of old news papers then you'll know journalists have always been the way they are now and the "journalistic integrity" has always been the shield they use when they get called out on their malicious behavior.
@Ladadadada
@Ladadadada 5 лет назад
Absolutely. Also simplified versions of a story (to the point where they are misleading or outright wrong) are created faster, consumed faster and are shared sooner than the more complex, nuanced, referenced version of the same story. And these are techniques that we see in even reputable sources.

Even if the stories were true, social media is still not a place to get news. Social media, almost by definition, provides news that is tailored for YOU, based on your past reactions (so called filtering bubbles). Real news requires 1) responsible journalists/editors, 2) anonymous readers.

My news on social media is overwhelmingly from scientific publications and space agencies. This is a very serious issue though, that’s why I appreciate that I got to learn in high school journalistic principles like investigating the origins of a claim and thinking about how to evaluate and assess it. Thank you Destin for making this.

Yeah, but to be fair, its also the first time of our society to get confronted with such a open information source and currently we start to openly discuss the situation about this information flow on a global scale. I mean if you look back 20 years ago... what did people had then ? Newspaper and TV ? And also most of this stuff was only local wide, only in your state, city or country. At that time there was no need to teach the people what they had to look up, because these few sources just selected and defined the information for you and also at that time nobody really critically looked at these informations. We are currently in a phase where all this is starting to change, because of the internet. So... its not really sad, but rather eye opening that things changes quite quickly recently.

RuLeZ1988 I agree, I think it’s unprecedented that mainstream media publish content/articles without verifying that it’s true, and in some astonishing instances where they double down on inaccurate information to appease an audience looking for a certain narrative. The thing that’s most shameful in all of this is the journalists, because one would hope that as a journalist you would feel at least a little bit shameful for purposefully publishing an untruthful piece, but that seems pretty rare these days

gracefool Interesting point, in my opinion there are huge upsides as well as downsides to the accessibility of social media: on the one hand, outrageous events around the world can gain international traction and condemnation when they would otherwise have gone unnoticed has become possible due to ‘virality’, but equally it has degraded the influence and arguably the ethical standard of conventional media. I think «to make it harder » makes a good point, for example if twitter hired an unbiased firm to independently verify trending hashtags/stories for sensationalism and accuracy it could shape the way people consume media. Interesting point thanks for posting it

Whow! Great series. Very insightful and eye opening. I couldn't help but notices you missed an important aspect which most do when trying to solve an issue.The factor of human need to manage normal real life events.Going with what was said on the speed at which information/ads are generated far outweighing that of our speed to research before we post or retweet some piece, the fact that we can simply retweet something as easily as one click, while it could take hours to research one piece of news, would deter people from reposting anything. The ads and fake news will continue to proliferate and we continue stuck in the cycle of unreliable facts. I truly believe that it is up to the corporations which created such systems and cultivated a culture of fake unreliable information to prevent the ease of simply clicking once to repost something as well as continuing to improve their efforts to rid the media frequencies for false information. What they need to do is shut down the entire report capability until they can figure out how to overcome this problem.
