Canadian here. Our education system teaches us world history. We know a lot about other countries.

I would think that "world history" by definition is about the world. Not about the US, but about the world. In my country we learn about the world, but for US citizens there is no world outside the US. That is totally weird. And bad.

It is not just history being fairly US centric, it is that you don't get much in your daily news about other countries. Certainly in Europe, but I think in the vast majority of the rest of the world, we grew up with significant segments of world news in our daily news programmes. We all know what is going on in all the other countries as well as our own, which is different from the US being majorly focused on what is going on in the US. I think this doesn't help Americans get a perspective on how the US is so different from other countries, e.g. vast majority of the world has freedom and the US is not the most free country (15th down the list), US is far lower on world indexes for health, low mortality rates, education among other issues. As you said, it takes people like you with more enquiring minds to have to do your own research. Also, US history is only 300 years old, whereas rest of the world is 000's. If you are only getting history where you are involved, that is not much of history.

As a Canadian born in Toronto, I remember talking to a group of Americans when I was in Egypt during the Gulf War and they telling me that the Americans would win because they loved their country so much and remember telling them it might surprise you but I love Canada just as much as you love the states.

John Cleese when asked about the difference between living in the US and England said one thing I noticed in Britain when we have a World Championship we tend to invite other countries.

I went to school in Canada and I remember learning about Canadian history and Geography but also the rest of the world to some degree. I remember doing a report on the fishing industry in Greece once.

USA is oriented on the USA while a lot off other countries are focused on the world. 50% of the news in the Netherlands is about other countries (and not only Europe)

British Columbia is on the west coast, Vancouver is a 2 hour drive from Seattle, you should know that from your own history, "54-40 or fight"

Talking about accents, as a brit americans and canadians can sound similar but it suprised me when i was mistaken for an australian in the u.s. Apparently we sound quite alike to americans to my ear the difference between the english accent and the australian is as big as the difference ours and the american accent

They get so offended easily but most what was said, is pretty much on the nail. The fact these two don't even know their country's history blows my mind away. If anything, they just proved how truthful these stereotypes. Ill will gift some maple syrup to anyone who can post how many times they say "like" and "blah blah blah". Smart couple.

Canadians do not say "eh" nearly as much as Americans believe that they do. Also, Canadians do not say "sorry" as an apology but instead as a means to express sympathy. It's an alternative to saying "I'm sorry that YOU are so unfortunate.".

I once saw a Reddit post asking what we non-Americans think of them and they said the way the rest of America looks at Florida 😂😂😂. Also shouting USA in unnecessary situations ain't it😂 ThE lAnD oF thE FrEeeeeeE

7:36 - Portuguese here. I was 9 years old in 1974 when a military revolution put an end to the dictatorship (the longest one in Europe). I remember watching TV when I was 5 or 6, still during the dictatorship, in the single TV channel we had back then and even in a state controlled media situation, there were news from all over the world in the two news segments they broadcasted during the time of day they were on the air (around 15 hours).

Kudos for trying to examine your own culture objectively, including criticisms & stereotypes. It says a lot. ❤️

I grew up loving American movies and music , beautiful country and great nation . But the boastful bragging , and general ignorance of the rest of the world takes away everything praise worthy .

Most "parts of Canada" are different than "parts of Canada" to be honest. The US is fairly... insulated. There is so much "US" material that both your history and your news seems to largely ignore the happenings everywhere else. I mean all countries focus on their events, but the US seems to take it to a different level. The different areas do have slightly different, occasionally drastically different, cultures. Quebec is an obvious one because it is rooted in French culture. The Maritimes too have a distinct culture...

She is, well, lets say a little bit atypical American, says what she thinks and makes fun of both the US (mostly) and us Germans where appropriate in her own special way. But also deals with serious topics very well with facts and research.

Vancouver is a city in British Columbia, which is a province on the west coast, just notth of Seattle, Washington. Montreal is about 2/3 French-speaking and 1/3 English-speaking. The rest of Canada is about 95% English-speaking. Most francophones in Québéc identify as Québécois first and Canadian second.

When we are kids we are not too interested in any history but as adults we are more interested in it. Americans and Canadians have a very similar accent and I can tell the difference only if I hear someone say aboot instead of about and I know not every Canadian says aboot. Americans are not told much about how other countries work because they might face the controllers and say " we are the only country that lives as a business" and that makes them have to look at things differently

Our geography and history classes taught us both Canadian and American history. Also, we learned about world history and major events throughout history

U.S. intelligence back some time ago some U.S citizens came upon myself and friends in either July or August with skis on top of their vehicle asking us where the snow 🌨️ was. It was hard to contain our laughter. Finally telling them it's thousands of miles north of where they were but they didn't believe us

7:40 I'm from Germany and of course we learned about the history of other countries even if it didn't involve us. The history classes are of course time restricted so learning about everything everywhere is impossible, and the focus was definetly European history, starting with antiquity all the way to today. However we did learn some basic (past Columbus - the native american history was almost entirely neglected) history of the Americas, India and East Asia (mostly China and the Mongols) as well. African history (except ancient Egypt and during colonialism) was mostly ignored though which is a shame. That said - I did ask my teacher once about this and he said that he'd love to teach more about these topics as well, but the limited amount of time simply left no space for that.

Stereotypes come about from facts but we know they don’t apply to everyone. Oh another note re the stereotypes that Americans have on Canadians I have found to not be so kind - calling them boring and slow etc

I am polish I learned in school about world history same goes for geography it was not only centered on Poland far from it

I’m Australian and we learned about the whole world with a focus on the British Commonwealth ( of course). However, we did learn the history of China, Russia, Greece , India , to name a few, so we did actually learn about most countries ( their history and geography). I’m not sure if that is still true as ,unfortunately , the general educational standard has gone down in recent years.

Puritans went to america because they were at odds with the anglican and catholic churches . they got their supplies from britain by ship, they didnt want to pay duty on their imports, which had been raised because the prince regent was in debt, so raised the duty tax on supplies . paul reveres ride was somewhat later in your history

There is so much that can be commented on this topic. I'll keep it short. Canada is 2nd largest country in the world with just 40 million pop. 80 per cent of the pop lives just north of the US border. We are so so influenced by the US , it's news, it's movies, it's tv shows etc... check out history of pilgrims, British settling in New England , then some wanted their own country but Britain was still supporting the british in what is now the US. You had to chose, stay with Britain or become your own country AKA loyalist wars ... it goes from there Check out Canadian geography, the provinces and How Canada came to be. The persons in the street interviews were a little over the top, we really don't think like that. Americans are awesome neighbours!! Keep up the good work :)

Geography obliviousness is probably the most common stereotype outsiders have of Americans have is probably the most common. The next one is “U! S! A! Yeah we’re the best!”

The British Colonies (which would eventually be the beginning of the USA) were originally established for trade and commerce to BENEFIT Britain! Then immigration started, including the Pilgrims who left England because they felt society was too free and liberal and established an ultra religious CONSERVATIVE society/settlement in the Americas, setting the future of much ssof the USA's conservative/isolated (somewhat restrictive/backward world view).

Canadian here, from Alberta. Yes a, we learn WORLD HISTORY. we had to know each state and its capital, plus other countries of the world. YOU also have no idea why the people “fled” the UK and TheNetherlands. They were the American taliban and wanted to persecuteANYONE who did not follow their extreme beliefs, so they went to the Americas to persecute anyone who didnt believe in their religion. 🙄

In Denmark we learn about World war 2 and vikings of course.. but also Way back to Martin Luther Kings periode and yes we have some American history as Well but thats in the begining years of the us

You should watch American Revolution oversimplified to see why, if it was to get away from the government the government wouldn't of spent all their money defending the colonies from against the french. It was pretty much to look for money making opportunities and to set up trade with England also some wanted to get away from the church. hence why England needed to tax the colonies because they'd just spent a ton of money defending them.

Your Canadian accent is pretty good.

Following the Seven Years' war between New France and Britain, the British parliament imposed punishing taxes on its American colonies in order to pay itself back the high cost of the war. The colonies didn't take this lying down. Decisions were being made about them across the ocean and they didn't feel represented in the process. This launched the resentment that would build to the American revolution. No taxation without representation. It didn't help that their recent enemies (the newly conquered province of Quebec) were being treated with kids gloves by Britain. The French in North America were given the right to freely keep their church and practice their religion (Catholicism) and keep much of their seigneurial system of government. The Oath to the king was modified to allow their secular leaders to stay in power. All this was done to placate the French, as it was understood by Britain that there were more of THEM in the Saint Lawrence valley than there were English British subjects. For a people whose founding myth was that of Plymouth rock and the Puritan pilgrims fleeing religious oppression in Britain to Massachussetts, this was quite unpalatable. American eceptionalism is alive and well to this day in all your media and culture.

My stereotype of the United States of America is it's a nation that doesn't even know the name of their own country. There are two Americas north and south. The name of their country is the United States of America. Meaning it's a group and many states that united as one in the continent of North America to form a nation

Newfoundland is Ireland, NS is Scottish, Quebec is French, Ontario is “Canadian”, and west of that is pretty well comparable to the western United States, with less guns.

I'm from Montreal and that video was shot near Concordia University (presumably those were students). I don't think they were a good sample of Montrealers.

The thing about history classes... It just makes sense to study human history as such. And there is a logical and meaningful concept. You start where civilization first rose from the Stone Age. And although the history of our culture begins about 12,000 years ago, we can easily forget the first 6,000 years because we have very little data about it. But if you are interested, then check out something about Göbekli Tepe. Otherwise you start with the Sumerians and slowly work your way through antiquity via the Egyptians and all the peoples from the fertile crescent to the Minoans and Greeks. This is the beginning of the cultural history of Europe, which was then also essential for the emergence of the USA. The trick is to only look at things that are exciting. The Egyptians are way ahead and doing things like building pyramids, while in England they are tinkering with gross things like Stonehenge. So why waste time looking at England when there are pyramids to admire... And so you work your way through history until your own people emerge from the shadows and step onto the stage of history. Btw... The 3 young dudes are high as hell...

Talking about history,yes we learned not only about Romania's history but also about french history,italian history,US history,british history but like for a semester or something and we had to study it to pass examas. You maybe learned Texas history or US history but I bet just those pretty stories not the hard truth like how the whites have masacred indians or black people. No offense!
