I’m glad Cannone is turning out to be the real deal. I remember when Limardo won gold and most people kind of wrote him off as a one trick pony until very recently. I’m glad he’s getting the respect he deserves.

I hope the success of mdowald doesn't lead to more behavior like his. I think its important to highlight the weakness of relying on cheap tricks and games to win, though its part of the game. And to highlight the extreme importance of being respectful and focused within this sport. Thank you for reviewing this video.

I'd say fencing is probably in dire need of a little drama/excitement. What is this the 15th century or something?

@johnseabron is this the excitement you are talking about? It might have cost the men's usa epee team their seat in the Olympics ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ahQmXkKxV3I.html

Curtis is an enigma. I guess the gamesmanship works for him, but there are times that I feel he would just be better off just fencing. He’s got a great mind for the game and a student of all fencers’ games. However, I would think that Cannone is used to the games. They must have crossed paths frequently when Curtis was at St. John’s and Romaine at Sacred Heart.
@GPFencing

That's really interesting, I didn't think that they could have crossed path like that before, thank you for sharing!

@@GPFencing I believe that they are only a year apart. I suppose we could fact check, this but I would often see them both at NACs during that period as well.

He could fence much better if he can control his temper better.

Oh man I was really hoping for you to analyze this exact match, what a banger of a comeback by Cannone. I also do think that at some point the refs just need to wise up to people playing the mental game BETWEEN touches. It's absurd how much people can dillydally around, change weapons and waste time. If you want to play the mental game it really should happen when the clock is running, and there should be a rule against what is clearly stalling to take a breather.
@GPFencing
@GPFencing 2 года назад
I agree that there should be a rule however until there is one I think it’s ok for people to play around them !
@arnaudchauffaille7270

There is an existing rule: abusive interruption of the fight T43.2. The referees just need to have the courage to apply the rule. Look at how badly foil has evolved because of poorly trained referees.

Mcdowald at that last point, as an experienced ref I would have given him a yellow. If he kicked off I would have pointed to the line and reached for my cards. He does display poor sportsmanship. Not necessary as he is so skilled. I think his own antics are very much his weakness as well as his strength . Thanks for a great video.
@GPFencing
@GPFencing 2 года назад
I think I would have personally yellowed as well. I feel as the antics bring him to mental highs they also bring him to absurd lows, it’s a hard act to balance.

Good analysis !! After three or four fleches, Cannone had figured out the rhythm in which Mc Dowald was stuck into. C. had noticed Mcd doesn't know how to step back, so once you double lunge in close, you know you got him.

I feel Curtis's blade and food work is designed to attack someone from a low to high line. When Cannone lowers his body whenever Curtis wants to attack he neutralises all of Curtis's footwork and bladework.

Mcdowald makes me confuse when I watch his matches, he is definitely a strong player with great techniques especially his extremely fast flash attack, he doesn’t have to do those cheap mental tricks to make him win. I don’t know if it’s precise to call those tricks “cheap”, sometimes they really helped him to win and sometimes they just make him lose his reputation and respect from his opponent. Mcdowald is not a guy with hateful behavior, he saluts friendly and shows respect to his opponent when match finished, I met players that just rude and impolite myself during competition, they keep complaining to ref and refuse to salute or saluted very disrespectful after game, apparently mcdowald is not one of them, I really think he needs to stop those mental tricks he use now when he fence, he DOES NOT need them.

Unfortunately you’re only half right…Curtis has a reputation here in nyc for being a bit of an asshole. I’ve heard no more than five unique stories about the dude. Either way he’s been known for choking for quite a while. He needs to work on his mental

last lap 0'56 McDowald deserve a yellow card. you can't stop a match as you want. With his speed McDo can't lost this match. He's really speed but a part of technics missing.

Fencing needs more people like Mcdowald to spark public interest. People love expressive and temperamental characters, bitter rivalries etc. Sports people from Ali to Chris Eubank in the UK, baddy wrestlers, McEnroe; Mayweather, Marc Marquez have known that more people will turn up to see you get beat than to see you win. Curtis vs the advertising hoarding brought more attention to fencing than if team USA had won the thing. People like a bit of fireworks in sport.

Cannons was too far away. With flèche, the speed is slow when you are ready and close or really away from the range. Curtis has a long range being effective so be ready and close in is the way to go I think. Nice lesson

Curtis had a strong read on the tempo of Cannone's footwork, the bouncing in and out. He was catching Cannone planting his front foot, but impressively also timed and deliberately overshot some fleches to catch the backwards part of Cannone's little bounce. Awesome bout. Love seeing technique prevail over gimmicks.

Mcdowald pulls his arm way back at the beginning of every fleche. I'm sure that fools a lot of fencers into not reacting.
