You mean to tell me rich powerful people hired the brother in law of the most rich and powerful man in the world to be in charge of the Treasury? This can't be correct!
@@markfairbanks3533 that’s not really what happened. Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon weren’t related, their businesses were not intertwined, and Andrew Carnegie had no role in Andrew Mellon’s posting as Treasury Secretary. Plus, Mellon was nearly as wealthy as Carnegie. This video is intended to be humor, not an accurate portrayal of history. Andrew Mellon founded the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research and Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Institute of Technology, an unaffiliated university. The two merged in 1967.
@@dmr11235 thank you for that, I've just spent some time reading on Mellon as all i knew of him was from middle school. What I haven't discovered is how this is considered comedy, with no basis in fact?
When I graduated from CMU, they brought us all in a back room before hand and gave us a secret presentation. I’m surprised this is public knowledge now they made all of us sign NDAs
i cannot get overrrr how good you are at acting omfg like i know these are just silly little shorts but you’re an absolute natural & make me laugh every time!! so talented
@@gahl5897 Wow your mum must be highly qualified...one of my current profs here in India worked there during the late 90s as a prof in high energy physics and cosmology...
@@gahl5897 Absolutely true...I want to get into the Computer Science program for Master's at CMU tho I'm only a freshman rn. Gosh I heard it's ranked even better than that of Harvard's, don't know why people here hating on it. Tho it's hella expensive
I accidentally paused the video at the awkward "Not quite $100" stare and burst into tears laughing because it took a solid 10-15 seconds to realize I had paused it and it wasn't just a really long stare 😂
I like how he hired thugs to beat union organizers and locked workers in a blast furnace in response to work condition complaints, but hey- nice theater.
Do you have a source for those? I did a bit of research on his treatment of his workers, and although his hands definitely are not clean, I found no mention of either of your claims. Furthermore this video is not attempting to paint him as a good person in the first place, so I’m not sure the relevance of your comment. Edit: fixed garbage spelling
@@futuregamer25 The relevance, as much as there is, is that he is revered as a philanthropist. The Pinkerton agency actually did the locking in, I forgot the main guys name.
So during his career he wasn't the greatest boss but he never did anything as terrible as murder and he was better than several if the other robber barons What this video is about is how when they got older him and a bunch of the other robber barons just had a ton of money and just started donating it to random causes, and they donated a lot of money to a lot of stuff, that's why their names are everywhere
Funny! While the term Ivy League was in use as early as 1933, it became official only after the formation of the athletic conference in 1954! Carnegie Technical Schools (1900-1912) Carnegie Institute of Technology (1912-1967) Mellon Institute of Industrial Research (1913-1967) Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) (1967-Today)!
@@nursesophie5254 Really isn't same difference. The variation of accents is abundant and Andrew Carnegie was from my hometown of Dunfermline, Fife. Xxx
@@Lost-in-Wonderland Ahhhh.... makes sense why he financed the Libraries in my town in the North of England and neighbouring town.... I always assumed he was American because of Carnegie Hall but him being from around 100 miles away makes much more sense.
@@samuelwoods164 Yes, he was a major philanthropist throughout the UK and the States. Funnily enough I live in North Lincolnshire now. As a child I performed in the original Carnegie Theatre in Dunfermline. He put a lot of money into such things as drama, music and literature. For school days out we went to Carnegies birth place museum which is the house he was born in within dunfermline, there is a statue at the entrance of the Glen (outdoor park) of him. Very fascinating self made man if I remember correctly who did a lot for those less fortunate. Proud to be from his home town xxx
@@Doc_Schmidtperhaps, but the difference between what you stated and Wikipedia is pretty massive. Carnegie was married to a Whitfield. The Mellon Institute of industrial research was founded by the Mellon brothers, who also founded Mellon bank. CMU didn't become CMU till 1967. So in the sense you're on the internet sure.
They’re still doing fine lol. I worked at a nursing home in western PA that ended up having a mellon move in. Boy was she extra in all her needs. Rented two deluxe rooms one just for an office and had a bath installed
To answer your question a bit late, basically everything with that name slapped on it was named after him due to a large donation. I mean the money came from less than ethical business practices and his philosophy around business and money had some serious issues (both in practice and suggesting some serious character flaws), but he wasn't the worst of the robber barons and did legitimately give a _lot_ of money away and set up some good institutions that are still operating today. Not sure if I'd say the good outweighed the bad, but he did do a fair bit of good and (at least in my interpretation) probably sincerely believed in what he was doing (even if it's not entirely possible to seperate it from his self-interest), so a lot of stuff has his name.
@@TrelliessRose oh, sorry, i wanted to learn elvish, but i (of course) ended up learning 2 words, fire (lacho) and friend and somehow i messed up, even these 2!
Surely $50,000 would be no where near enough money to create and open a brand new University from scratch. Also I stumbled across your Vids for the 1st time early this morning, And I have been binge watching your videos ever since. It was also during that 1st vid that I Subscribed. 🙂
@@Doc_Schmidt Of course, if it had failed, the oldest buildings were easily convertible to factories, and it was just a technical college. With a good arts school, back when my mother went.
Basically everything with the name "Carnegie" on it got a lot of money from the same guy. Tl;dr not so ethical businessman, somewhat sketch philosophy around money and business (though not the worst), but did legitimately give a lot of money away in the latter half of his life.
