The parts where audio data is recorded are magnetized, so the magnetic powder gathers there. This is the audio data that is recorded onto a cassette tape.
Take a look at this. I have taken out the part of the boombox where you place the cassette tape. This here is the magnetic head, which records and replays audio. The magnetic head is an electromagnet. When we record audio on tape, the electromagnet changes the electrical signals of sound into varying magnetic strengths.
