EV Times, How Catastrophic EV Depreciation has EV-iscerated the Motor Trades confidence in Electric Vehicles
I have used Motorpoint as an example as it has been well documented in the Trade papers, Motorpoint have regrouped and survived, www.am-online.... but many didn't, catastrophic EV depreciation had a disastrous effect on many garages, as it even had a knock on effect to ICE cars which sent their values tumbling too, so please, do not reply in the comments that DEPRECIATION is only an issue if you sell the vehicle, because its not!!!! its an issue to every one, from the manufacturer, to the garage, to the leasing company, to the end user, i say end user tongue in cheek because i still don't think we have seen the full picture of how many EV's have been pre registered, and how many are still out there ticking away and waiting to blow up in the Motor Trades face
my advice as always is that if an EV suits your needs and you can mostly charge it from home, get it,

i remember going to see the bank manager when i was 16 for a loan, and i went in wearing my overalls as i'd come straight from work. he made a point of saying he was more likely to give me a loan than someone in a suit because it was obvious i was a grafter. I've been running my own business for over 20 years now and i've never forgotten that day. I've also never forgotten that the best thing anyone can learn, is the art of listening. The public will only readily buy into something new if it is markedly better in every respect than what is presently available. It will sell itself without pushy salespeople. EV, and its battery technology in particular, needs to progress a great deal more before that criteria is met.

well, latest stats from the SMMT, the organisation that monitors the sale of vehicles, contradicts your assumptions...here are the figures... SMMT SALES DATA september 2024 Record 56,387 BEV registrations in September "Uptake of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) grew faster than any other fuel type in the month, up 32.1% to take an 8.9% share of the market. Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) registrations rose 2.6%, boosting market share to 14.2%, while petrol and diesel registrations declined by -9.3% and -7.1% respectively" Here is ACTUAL SMMT sales data .... Sept 2024 Diesel DOWN -7.1% Petrol DOWN -9.3% BEV (full battery electric) UP +24.4% PHEV (plug-in battery hybrid)UP +32.1% HEV UP ( non plug-inHybrid) +2.6% TREND( year to date) Diesel DOWN -12% Petrol UP +0.8% BEV (full battery electric) UP +13.2% PHEV (plug-in battery hybrid) UP +25.2% HEV ( non plug-inHybrid) UP +13.6% says the SMMT..."Demand for the latest BATTERY ELECTRIC vehicles (BEV) hit a new record volume for any month in September, up 24.4% to 56,387 units, achieving a 20.5% share of the overall market, up from 16.6% a year ago. " battery technology is progressing rapidly, the cost of battery manufacture is falling, the range of BEV's is rising. EV's are now achieving ranges of around 400 miles....not that range is relevant in the real world where the average daily use in the UK is 18 miles.

Barrie once again you're on the money, I used to do contract smart repairs for a very large Scottish based car supermarket, who became very interested in toys for us premises, I heard a salesman who had been advised by a mechanic that a turbo was faulty say don't worry we will deal with that later, he was only interested in hitting target. I would never buy from a car supermarket because of what I've witnessed. I bought my rrs 2006 2.7 six years ago on my gut feeling whilst having a test drive and nearly 60k later I still own it and it's used every day. Over my 50 years in the motor trade there are 2 salesmen that I would happily buy a car from I think that says it all. Keep the videos coming they are always something I can relate to.

@@russiandrivers9986 Unlike the old days, we now have all the info we need at our fingertips, including what prices we can really expect to pay. The internet has put more power in the hand of the consumer, not the salesman. When I purchased a new car 4 years ago, I’d already done all my own homework and had made all the decisions already (I don’t make impulse decisions on things like this). I made the salesman do his bit, but in reality all he could do was lose the sale. He did his job well enough and the sale went through. Yes, it was an EV, don’t worry about it! It’s fine by the way and the numbers work for me, even at depreciation around 70% 😉

I live in Norway. I'll give you a good example of a buyer here. My dentist, nice girl, had a BMX X1. Nice car, didn't want to sell it but because the toll system around Oslo is so expensive for fossil fuel cars ( eletcric cars pay less to drive ) she's now in the market for an EV to save on her monthly costs. She's not a car person, just wants something decent and not expensive but is now buying a brand new EV. She doesn't want to but feels forced because she won't buy a used EV for obvious reasons. So probably not too long for now there will be another used EV on the Norwegian market nobody wants to buy as the masses get more in debt buying EV's.

Hey Barrie, as a potential punter this smacks of opportunity. Electric would work for me as i can charge at home. So whats the best way to maximise the depteciation and balancing that with a great car? I have always avoided leasing cars as the lease companies are generally smart enough to make money out if the punter so i would fund from savings and 'pay myself back'. I tried a Kia Niro EV and liked the size and specs and the range so that would indicate where i would look.

To be honest any EV will be ideal for you, especially if you intend to keep it for a few years, great bargains to be had, and if you can charge from home then they are cheap to run, if you can buy one, if you can buy one that is covered by warranty then your exposure is covered, I wouldn’t say they are great to drive, they just don’t seem to give you that immersive and emotive experience, but they are practical and efficient, sounds like an EV will suit your needs 👍

Last new car I bought the salesman was under such pressure to get me to take the tyre insurance out, they suggested banging a nail through the tyre when the tread gets low to get a ‘free’ new one. Major manufacturer, main dealer.

Hi Barrie, greetings from Oxford. I have a 2019 BMW i3, not planning to change, but I do follow the market. I do think some EVs have very high depreciation, but much of this is the manufactures fault for setting unrealistic new prices for their EVs. One example is the Vauxhall Corsa, new, the EV is more than 50% more expensive than the combustion version, that’s just plane stupid, it’s a Corsa FFS! The other often sited example is the Porsche Taycan, but these cars have a poor reputation for reliability and build issues, they also have a relatively poor range for such an expensive car. Used car buyers tend to do more research than new car buyers, because they can’t afford to make bad purchase decisions. Good cars will retain their value better than poor cars.

If a battery pack is £15k this is what you need to add to the price of the regular gas powered version as the cost of the power train on ev and gas is comparable (motor and speed controller vs engine and gearbox). The difference is you are adding 5000 18650 cells (@ £3 each) in a huge pack to power an ev vs a £50 empty plastic tank. So it is going to be massively more expensive.

@@carlwilliams3488 Well an electric motor is significantly cheaper to make than a combustion engine, batteries are getting cheaper all the time. The main issue is the economics of scale. Legacy auto makers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Making low volumes of any vehicle configuration is expensive.

If EV's depreciate at astronomical rates the manufacturers are going to have to cut their prices astronomically as well . How can Lease companies price their leases which are based at the moment on depreciation ? What is happening is catastrophic, car businesses just will not be able to plan at all , what a mess.

You are correct about selling cars that suffer from high depreciation. Whilst it might not immediately affect the dealer selling the car, it will affect them in the long term. This is because the buyer will have reduced equity to buy cars in the future. You will have removed a potential buyer from the market for years to come. Now can anybody answer this question. There appears to be a new fashion in dealerships. You have a conversation with a salesperson followed by a test drive as you are having a chat with them, out pops your latest buddy who you have never met before, the Sales Manager. They are ask few pointless questions and scuttle off. Why? What is this all about? To me this is an instant ‘red flag’ and don’t buy here signal. A good manager employs good staff who they trust to make sensible decisions. The other old croc, is “I’ll just have to check with my manager.” Of course you can - but I’ll not be here when you get the answer. Same reason.

I have just purchased a new Jaguar I Pace from slightly more than half its list price. Therefore I feel I'm fairly well protected from depreciation and will keep it for about 5 years. My old I Pace dropped from about £83,000 down to be about £21,000 over 3 years and 45,000 miles, I.e. it lost about 75% of its value. I bought it on PCP over 4 years and Voluntarily Terminated the agreement. As I had paid more than 50% (taking into account my deposit, manufacturers contribution and my payments) I had nothing further to pay. If in 5 years the car is only worth about £10-12,000 (from its list price of £83,000) I won't be too upset considering what I have paid. I am assuming the garage want to get rid of all their Jaguar stock, and especially the EVs. I don't know why they have given such a large discount, but for me it has allowed me to buy another premium car for the price of a much more modest vehicle. P.S. I am retired and in a very small group of people where an EV is the right vehicle for my needs.

yesterday at 11.04am in morning my sisters 18 month old ev died on the drive... the recovery company took her car away 45 minutes ago the dealers rang her to say the charge controller had failed but its under warranty.. oh great she said and its going and the replacement part should be in between ................... January 17 to febuary the 10th shes now got a diesel loan car

When I was transporting cars in and out of 'Trade Sales' in Slough I use to watch the salesmen from my cab waiting for their prey like a pack of hyenas and the gibberish nonsense that would come out of their mouths was a joke, the salesmen just wanted to sign that customer up to a finance deal/ extra warranty and breakdown cover for his extra commision, but more shocking were the amount of people who fell for it!!.

Many moons ago I had cause to visit that dealer in East lancs. Sure enough they appeared to be a dumping ground for high mileage, one owner(rental) cars. They were late model cars and under manufacture warranty. So, they didn't even have the onerous duty of providing a warranty.

yes, that's why you see thousands of videos spouting nonsense under the guise of click bait titles to entice the gullible. I'm a premium member so I pay to not have to endure the relentless tedium of adverts...then some youtubers, thinking they're smart, advertise by stealth featuring "channel sponsors " . it eventually creeps onto every youtubers channel as they clamber for more clicks to accelerate revenue and attract these sponsors. hey get into the endless circle of greed, having to produce more and more videos to keep up momentum, as a result they are forced to spout nonsense to get their view rates up ...as soon as "and todays sponsor is" is mentioned I unsubscribe.

Also good advice dont buy a car that seems too good to be true , Good example i bought a 2013 Fiat 500 in a gorgeous Ferrari Yellow , the Lounge version with the panoramic roof Ac Electric mirrors windows built in sat nave alloys etc , the car looked like brand new not 1 mark on it , new exhaust brakes tyres , I thought oh this is great and only £3 grand when i bought it at the start of this year from a car supermarket type place so paid for it there and then which was a bad mistake , got home and a few days later clutch and gearbox went £1000 bill i was left with , took me 2 months to get half the repair cost back , dealer refused to give me the full cost of repairs but i just left it at that as taking a dealer to court would cost me £180 for starters then id have to wait months for the magistrates courts to see the case and would probably have got the full amount back but who has 6 months to wait around nowadays? Anyway i left the company a bad review and strangely enough they changed their name , this is another common bad dealer trick ,Anyway i think im stuck witht he 500 till death do us part now lol as its only worth £2 grand now thanks to the use car market falling off a cliff , I think thats more due to it being winter , no one ever buys cars in winter unless its an emergency.

If EV depreciation has eviscerated the confidence of the motor trade, shows that the motor trade is working on old assumptions. Depreciation of all cars is currently very high. Most people who buy or lease new EVs get generous tax benefits, this depresses the second hand value, on top of that the technology is improving making people worried about obsolescence and have a much wider choice of new cars. It will take some time for this to settle down, but it will.

@@BarrieCrampton Cannot find UK information, from Us NADA website Outside of maintenance, all vehicles require repairs. Based on a no-deductible extended warranty, EVs averaged $1,712 in repair costs over five years, while ICE vehicles averaged $1,695. Servicing was $300 cheaper so EVs cheaper overall.

There is no catastrophic EV depreciation. There is used car depreciation. Ever tried to trade in a car? There is no difference. Please please please, point me in the direction of a late model cheap EV. I'm waiting.

My 21 EV is £6000 cheaper now than when I bought one year ago. That's forecourt price, the trade in price is even more horrific! That's a big hit. My 19 MX5 is worth the same now as it was was last year. In 50 years of owning car my EV has by far lost the most money. Some of my cars I have sold for more than I bought them for.

So your EV does 110mpg . Save a fortune on fuel do you lose a bigger fortune on depreciation and Insurance ? They are fine if you can afford one , but there are many drawbacks at the moment .

@@MarkWistowYep, Tesla has a service schedule and it's published on the website. This is often mis-claimed. It's "doesn't require regular servicing as a condition of maintaining the warranty and any servicing is discretionary and on demand."
