I have come to appreciate Carplay as well. I can do without power windows or locks but that hasn't been an option for decades. I hate out-of-lane and speed-limit alarms, but I think collision detection is a plus. I'm willing to pay for that, especially in a car that I give to my children. Sad-to-say but that saved my butt once.

Quality of any vehicle depends how you maintain and care for it. Always makes me laugh when anyone thinks one I more reliable than the other. At this point they all have more computers in them than anything so of course computers and electronics being more prone to failure means more issues overall. Simple.

my dad owned a '91 Civic DX Sedan from 1995-2018, had to get rid of it because the fuel tank was leaking and it was too expensive to fix. I'm glad I had the opportunity to drive it when I was first learning how to drive :) rolldown windows, manual door locks, GLASS headlight lenses! Toyota dealerships are the worst. I visited two in my area (Virginia Beach, VA area); they were both arrogant and rude. I have excellent credit and I was ready to buy with a decent cash down payment. Not trying to brag, but I'm the definition of a good customer. One sales manager got angry with me when I refused to pay a markup. They both felt entitled to my business. I put 488K miles on my 78 Corolla. I bought it in 83 for my college car. It had 70K miles on it when I bought it. After achieving my PhD, I kept driving it. I decided to see how long it would last. It died in 02, so I replaced it with a new Camry . I drove my Camry until my needs changed in 11 so I bought a new RAV 4WD Limited with the 3.5L V6. I drove it until 2/29/24 when I was ready to replace our worn out pickup. We sold our pickup and bought a “leftover” 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed, TRD Performance exhaust with the Premium and Technology pkgs. we then sold my RAV. I’m almost 60 years old, retired and plan on driving my 23 TRD until I die. I’ve been driving for 40+ years and have had to own only 4 daily drivers and they’ve all been Toyota’s. They’ve never let me down. I wish that Toyota would bring back the Hilux 22RE 4cyl 5spd regular cab long bed 4WD pickup with hand crank windows, manual locks, A/C and cruise control and allowed them in America. If they brought that back, I’d sell my 23 TRD in a heartbeat. It would have been a Great replacement for my worn out 83 Hilux with over 400K miles. That was an Awesome little light duty truck for work around our property and for getting firewood in the mountains. I looked at a used 23 SR5 access cab 2.7L 4cyl, but it had the automatic transmission and only 159 horsepower, so it was too gutless for my needs.

When I compare this video to the Car Care Nut's oldest video, '2007-2009 Toyota Camry Buying Guide' from four years ago, I am amazed at how conscientiously this channel has embraced Toyota's 'Kaizen' philosophy. 'We believe in the natural ability of people to change things for the better. Every improvement, regardless of size, is valuable. Encouraging both incremental and breakthrough innovative thinking, we seek to evolve with Kaizen, never accepting the status quo.' AMD is constantly evolving both his shop and this channel while maintaining the high quality that made us all fans. AMD and Sreten of M539 Restorations are two non-native English speakers who produce informative videos that can hold the attention of people who have no mechanical inclination at all. It's all about their passion for cars and attention to detail. RU-vid should be showering them both with cash!

As people became lazy and spoiled with electronics, everything has turned into what we have today. Imagine today, having to use a manual choke to start a cold engine or watching a movie on a black and white TV that we had to get off of our lazy ass's to change the channel or adjust the antenna so we could watch the best parts of the movie? People today would drop dead from the shock.

He is spot on regarding the fact that people neglect the maintenance part . I went to check the used car market to help a friend buying a compact car. The percentage of 10 year old cars who were maintained according To the manufacturer schedule was maybe around 10% at best. And we are not talking about fluid changes which a lot of manufacturers do not require anymore such as ATF or cooling fluid. Hardly anybody takes care of that.

You also have to pay attention to where the car was located. I check the reports to see where it was maintained. If it has maintenance records in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore or Washington DC, I wouldn’t buy it because those cars will have problems because of the terrible road conditions. Those cars get beat up because many drivers drive like the roads are smooth when they aren’t. I think it’s better to buy new and take better care of it and keeping it for a long time. It really doesn’t take long to damage vehicles out here if you’re not careful how you drive it.

I told him I had already purchased 15 quarts of 0W-8 and a case of filters and would be doing the first oil change at around 1000 miles. I recently changed ALL fluids in my 03 Tundra as well as valve cover gaskets that do tend to leak around 200 thousand or so. CCN hit it on the head when he said you Must keep up maintenance and fix things that pop up. Toyota isn’t the only company raising their prices though, could you imagine paying over a hundred grand for a bucket of bolts like an F-150?

As a Toyota master myself and I’ve been at the same dealership since 2013, unlike other people my age I would often listen to the older guys and soak in their wisdom. Toyota has changed over the years. Could be do to the older folks retiring and the newer guys taking the reins. Could also be a culture thing like how everybody wants the fully loaded out Mac daddy model with a sunroof. Could also be processes have changed which could be cheaper or epa mandated. All I know is at the dealer level it’s getting to the point idk how people are afford this gimmicky options and we are seeing issues that never existed before, like water leaks! I’ve been with Toyota for 12 years and have chased more water leaks in the past 2-4 years than I have my whole career. I’ve been a Toyota fan boy since I was 16 but it’s getting to the point I don’t want to buy anything new cuz I remember the days a base le Camry was like 22 grand out the door, now they start at like 31 and the base L Corolla was line 14 grand and now it starts at 25.

They already had adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, backup cameras, proximity keys and push button start, automatic lift gates, lane departure and blind spot monitoring, but physical buttons and dials were still present, so you didn't have to go through drop down menus on a massive screen or use voice commands for everything. It's been downhill ever since.

Thank you AMD. As a loyal EX-Toyota owner (7x), it really does come down to the "Cost/Value For Dollar" ratio in recent years. In truth, Toyota priced me out as early as the mid-1990's. I still greatly admire most of their vehicles. But budgetary concerns caused me to begin considering (and purchasing) other quality/functional/reliable JDM brands. I still clearly remember the pride I felt as a 17 year-old when I was able to buy my first Toyota. To me, the pricing (*LARGELY due to DEALER "ADD-ONS"/"Adjustments") is a deal-breaker. Thanks again for explaining how YOU see Toyota right now.

What's great about this model is it has a Timing Chain that I don't have to worry about replacing. However, it's been burning oil since 300k mi mark at about 1.5 Qt every 1500 mi give or take. I have a 2008 Avalon with 175,000 miles. I’ve owned it for 40,000. In that time I’ve…. -swapped both front axles (previous owner poorly changed boots so a rebuild wasn’t possible. Also didn’t want to replace one and not the other) -swapped both the lower control arms (they weren’t clunking yet, but didn’t feel like doing major suspension work again while doing the axles) -changed the spark plugs, ignition coils, and the plenum gasket (preventative maintenance) -ordered but haven’t replaced rear suspension because I learned the tie rods absolutely will not come off and so I’ll have to cut them off and order new ones -front coil springs, insulators/boots/bellows (somehow the bump stops were practically new and I need to get back in there to swap the struts and mounts as they were okay but I give them about a year) I obviously did oil changes every 5K, a trans fluid change (which I should do more than just the once), brake fluid flush, coolant flush, and brake work. I have gone back and forth between praising this car’s reliability and hating it. The simple truth is, cars will NEVER be easy to maintain. It comes down to what you care about. This old machine still drives like a dream and gets me 30 MPGs on road trips so I’ll keep her around as long as the north eastern rust allows.

The problem with all auto makers including Toyota is when you want to pick certain features you are stuck adding a package for each feature. And that drives people to shop around brands. The brand that ditches package setups and allows the customer to pick and choose what they want in their vehicle is the brand people will gravitate to in these inflated times. I miss those times I got the chance to sit down and select what I wanted in my build, Now I just look at what is left on the lot of the outgoing models with rebates because there are things I don't need that I have to accept to get what I do want and the marked down prices compensate.

That's why Ford sells so many F series. My tree farm uses them exclusively and the number of options, packages, and accessories to choose from is massive. Wow, what a novel concept; getting to select the options one wants or doesn't want on a vehicle! That's how it was done a long time ago. Mostly agree with you AMD. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but my wife's 2012 Yaris had brake caliper failure at around 85k miles. One of them seized so we replaced it, and then the other side also seized a few months later. It had a brake fluid flush a few years ago so it wasn't neglected. In contrast, my 2001 Yaris was about 20 years old and at 200k miles when it was totalled. Original calipers! I believe what changed was that in recent years Toyota uses European or American suppliers, whereas before it was pretty much wholly Japanese braking systems.

AMD, good video as always. The only point that I will contest is that it's not auto windows and auto door locks that are pricing cars sky high. Those features have become standard for most folks, and are a necessary safety feature for many of us. It's all the fancy "safety" stuff with all the sensors and driving inputs that are the pricey items, IMO. For us older drivers who actually pay attention while we are driving, these can be considered optional and not mandatory. But in our litigious society in the US, it is perhaps a CYA issue to have all the new safety features. Personally, I hope to keep my 2007 Rav4 with the V6 for as long as I drive.

things that are must haves/nice to haves for me are power steering, power windows, basic cruise control, backup camera (360 cameras are one of the brand new tech that seems like a nice to have too), screen for just the cameras (I don't care about it being touch screen), I wouldn't mind it being a manual but my wife will probably disagree. but to be honest, the new tech doesn't really grind my gears. what really ticks me off with Toyota is how they seem to be following the trend of making it harder to maintain your own car. ie: no transmission dipstick, leaving no working room in the engine bay, and sometimes just hiding basic maintenance items in places that make it a pain in the ass to get to.

AMD, Those of us who live and drive in the real world compare the quality of Toyotas to other car brands. Other people compare Toyotas to perfection. If people can find a better brand, PLEASE go and buy it as that will cut waiting lists for today's 'lower quality' Toyota cars. 😉 Many other brands have 'high quality' inventory piling up at their dealerships and I am sure they will be happy to take your money. 😂 In regard to Toyota pricing, in the good old days of 1999 a top trim Camry with 194 hp cost $25,000. With inflation that translates to over $47,000. A quarter century ago you had to pay for a little extra for Toyota quality and the same holds true today. The 1999 price also makes today's Camry LE priced around $29K seem like a bit of a bargain.

As an early adopter of both the 3rd gen Tacoma, and 3rd gen Tundra, I can say its spot on with the issues. It seems like with the lower volume of trucks sold, it takes a long time for issues to bubble up and get fixed. Its a night an day difference if you bring up an issue with the dealer very early on, vs after a few years once TSB's are released etc. I think Toyota could work to improve this. Like you said the volume sellers models don't seem to have these issues, but I'd say its more that they bubble up quicker and get addressed because of the increased volume. No dealer service dept is incentivized to spend a lot of time with early adopters on issues. Things are so complicated that I don't even think many techs can deal with the issues without engaging TAS.

Almost bought a 2006 Tacoma a few months ago. Single cab, crank windows, manual transmission, 4x4. Rust issues and the fact it was tan/gold made me pass in it, but I was seriously considering it for a bit. I can say that I’ll look for super base models on the used market. The new market hasn’t been on my mind since 2019. They’ve come down some but prices are still atrocious. Ford lost me for good when they started making plastic oil pans and made wet timing belts for the Focus…it just screams cheap. Back to Toyota: I always liked the true compact Toyota pickups, learned to drive on a 1989, and had an 04 Tacoma for a while. Frame rust killed that one, so I’m more on edge about any rust now. Was never a Chevy truck guy. Their interiors were hot garbage, seats would crack, dashes would crack, until around the mid-90s and even then they were sub-par compared to Ford and Toyota. Anyway, if I had to pick a new model it’d be a Toyota. The price may be high but at least Toyota is attempting quality.

After decades of Consumer Reports telling everyone they are getting scammed if they replace the transmission fluid (and other normal maintenance items) the general population is just geared against it. Add in that people still regularly replace their vehicles every 2-3 years and these upkeep items simply are not getting done by the first or second owners.

The way a buy a new car is buy the lowest trim of the highest level model I am looking for. Example I would get an XL F150 over a Lariat Ranger. LE Camry over a XSE Corolla. This rule has served me well over decades

Name another auto manufacturer that had the same level of rusting frame issues as Toyota did. I do agree as a former Ford master technician, people DO NOT maintain their vehicles they way they should.

I own a tree farm and we've had over a dozen F2/350s over the years with 200k+ miles and only minor surface rust on the frames, having never been washed in their entire lives. Toyota simply didn't do their research on how their vehicles would be used or maintained and build them accordingly.

Chevrolet comes to mind, their old C10’s and Suburbans and modern-ish 2500’s/3500’s just love to rot out everywhere there’s metal. Audi was the only one who got it right with the zinc-coated underbodies, but they ditched that after the 80’s bc cost

I'm now retired and I started driving mostly Japanese vehicles since the late 1970s. I have owned Hondas, Toyotas, and Nissans. I bought a new 1991 Nissan Hardbody pickup truck with a 4 cyl engine, manual transmission, no power windows or A/C, and drove it for 20 years. I look after my vehicles reasonably well and I don't drive them hard. In general, I have been very happy with my purchases. When Covid came along, I thought that it would be nice to have a new vehicle. I ordered a Honda Odyssey, waited 7 months for it to arrive, and the dealer ended up telling me that there was no indication of when,. or if, I was going to take delivery. I cancelled my order, waited a while, and went in search of a new Toyota Grand Highlander. No luck in finding one as the dealers had none and would take custom orders. Eventually, I ended up buying a Honda Pilot Sport, and I am very pleased with my purchase. I really like the ride and handling, and the V6 is smooth and provides plenty of power for my needs. Hopefully this vehicle will last a long time.

Got 97 tocama with 432,000 miles. Would not buy a new one. But do agree about the turbos. A lot of people, especially women, are going to neglect or not understand that turbo engines need regular oil changes. If not performed, they will fail early and damage performance. Turbos need clean oil if it is oil driven.

Because of your channel we just bought a 23 Lexus GX460 Premium Plus Sport. Our 14 Ridgeline is getting some age on it and the new Ridgeline is a huge disappointment. She absolutely loves her Lexus and I love that old reliable V-8. We're looking forward to many years of happiness with the 460 and yes.....change your oil and filter every 4-5K and check your air filter and cabin air filter every time you change your oil. Use the oil and oil filter and air filters sold at the dealership parts counter. Drain transmission fluid every 60K and refill it. Change coolant as per the recommended service interval and your vehicle will be very happy. Most problems occur because very simple yet necessary maintenance is neglected.

I definitely agree that truck owners are some of the most entitled and loud people I have ever met. The trucks indeed had problems, but man truck people keep on asking and asking and all they do is complain and complain.

Nothing is built like it use to be , some new things are built really good but nothing is perfect. Also I do think cars are getting to carried away with tech in cars , I like tech a lot , I think it is very interesting but I like basic tech in my car , I don’t over complicated or features I will never use. I think companies like Toyota and Honda are trying new things that are good and not so good but that the problem with peoples expectations

I am a Toyota owner since 1990 and I concur with you that the key is maintenance because all the times I had problems with my cars was due to lack of maintenance on my part or the previous owner, I had two used units and the rest I purchased brand new 🙏🏽

All these new Toyoats with junk turbos is a big deal breaker, a small engine in a large car/truck with a turbo will not last all that stress on the engine. Toyota did not re-invent the Turbo they will be a expensive repair down the road all for a few MPG savings that will be eliminated on replacing them. Everyone just blames the EPA and gov.
