Awesome professor

If one stays in complete darkness for about 5 days, their brain will start to create DMT, which is a hallucinogen. Also, being in a deep cave, you can achieve total silence on top of total darkness, which eliminates sensory input almost completely: the Buddha taught us to guard the sense doors. The Buddha specifically mentioned noise as being a "thorn" to meditation, and although I haven't found any reference to darkness in the Buddhist sutras, one does assume that closing one's eyes at a minimum would be predicate to meditating. Unless of course one is meditating on the vision of some object.
