In this video I compare the cheap craft paints to the higher end paints and show you what I use on my 3D prints and why! Are they any good? And can they be used to airbrush and get a good result?

Do you have a good recommended yellow? I can’t find a yellow that doesn’t take 10 layers to look decent
@TheCreativeCollector
@TheCreativeCollector Год назад
Try using a flat white first. Since white has a more saturated pigment, the white will cover a little better on the first coat. Then use the Vallejo flat yellow. You still might have to do a couple of coats, but do them thin and it'll look good in the end. Yellow is one of those cursed colors. lol

I'm happy to see another painter use cheap paints in there work. A good painter can use any paint and make it work and look great. Cheers

Awesome video People may hate on craft paints, but when I come to painting terrain, it just makes a lot of economic sense not to use your more expensive points for something like that. I would quickly go broke if I attempting to use Vallejo paint on terrain lol

Absolutely! These work even better than I thought. I too was skeptical in using them, but this will save me a lot of money on larger projects.

Here's a tip for using craft paint: If you're gonna thin it, use ink instead of water. I've only mixed water based ink with water based paint so I dont know how the alcohol based ink will react with the water based paint, but the results ive gotten have been great. By thinning with ink you're retaining color pigment as the paint thins out.

The difference between the Vallejo paints is the finish they leave model is flat , game is satin and mecha is glossy , air is thinner and somewhere between model and game color . Also I agree about citadel I started with those but quickly moved to army painter and Vallejo.

Awesome video! I use valejjo, spaz stix and wicked in my airbrush and I ordered a bunch of craft paint and a set of pastels to dry brush with plus rub and buff! You turned me onto inks, wood filler, flat clearcoat and others! I have ordered glow in the dark neutral, valejjo still water, rub and buff, bsi 2 part epoxy, apoxie sculpt, valejjo snow and mod podge! Thank you for your awesome and informative videos!

I came up with that name just for the comedy value. Streamers like to mention new members, so I made this name to bring some mirth and raise a smile. It's actually taken from a race horse of the same name, which then changed the rules on horse naming. The Vallejo Game paints have a higher resin content so designed for excessive handling, I find they don't work as well as the other Vallejo paints for glazing so not the best for head sculpts and the like, there is also a Game Air range, which is great. I've found my preference being Scale Color's range. Amazingly versatile paints with a high Matt finish. Great Video as ever.

One addition to vallejo: their "toughest" paint is the Mecha line, intended for use on gunpla models with moving parts that might slide against themselves. I've seen tests where fully cured Mecha paint stands up to scratching from a sharp toothpick before it finally comes off. Even if one doesn't switch over to the Mecha line, one product I REALLY recommend is Mecha varnishes - flat, satin, or gloss. These cure to a really tough resin skin. If you're going to be handling something a lot, the Mecha varnish may be the best topcoat. Outside of something hardcore like a clear epoxy sealer.

Talking about accessoires: Do you use any painting handles or holders, and If so, do you make them yourself or do you buy them? I know there are handles you can get for painting miniatures, but what about body parts from large scale models that have no base to attach a handle to? Maybe an idea for another great and informative video, keep up the good work!
@TheCreativeCollector
@TheCreativeCollector Год назад
Thanks! I generally use some alligator clips to hold some of the pieces if I need to. I don't have any real handles or holders other than that, but definitely something to look into.

I find that the craft paints work better on preprimed surfaces. The brand I get is very inconsistent between colors though but is a bit thicker but lower pigment concentration I guess. Makes for decent washes and ok for base coats but needs at least 2 good passes. For terrain they're great because of cost, esspecially when you can get the bigger 'jars'.

Solid video on different brands and style of paints. I've mostly been using acrylic style paints like Tamiya, Mr. Color, and Gaia Notes only because I started out painting Gundam models before I got into 3D printing. I find GaiaNote to be my favorite only because of how consisted and smooth it applies. They are very hard to find now and most places are out of stock. Their thinners are some of the best I've used. I am slowly getting back into water based paints like Vallejo but I am still not great in the ratios where I find it can come out a bit too watery. I think it is cause I use water to mix. Their Mecha line I have to say is very vibrant like Mr Color and GaiaNote. So I am learning to paint metallic, clear (transparent) coat and candy color. What base should I use and is airbrush the best way for clear coat? I can't wait to see the Human Torch video since it would help me greatly for applications like flames.
@TheCreativeCollector
@TheCreativeCollector Год назад
Thanks for the info! Very useful. I use a silver base for the candy paint from Tamiya and definitely use an airbrush for a more consistent finish. Just make sure to apply in thin coats as the finish will darken with the more coats you add. Top it off with a good clear gloss and man...it'll look sweet.

It depends what craft paint you get. The Walmart apple craft paint actually works better with my airbrush than things like Vallejo of Createx and the color does not fade as it thins. Plus, it mixes right away, no need to stir for 2-10minutes straight when mixing which is a nightmare. And water is the only reduced you need.

I usually don't but I did notice you have to thin it down a little more than others.

I damaged the paint finish on an expensive anime figure and bought a set of skin tone vallejo paint. I used fine detail top apply the paint and small makeup brush to smooth it and painted it in layers over time to restore it how it was before. I'll stick with them once I get a better airbrush. While I'm practicing airbrushing does anyone have any good suggestions for cheaper paints or should I just stick with vallejo.
@TheCreativeCollector
@TheCreativeCollector Год назад
I'm a huge Vallejo fan so that would be my suggestion.

That craft paint looked just as good, if not better on warmachine that's awesome. Do you think all those craft paints are similar? Walmart has a couple cheap brands I'm curious if they work the same?
