The story of sacrificing something for greatness is exactly what happened in the 2018 world cup with Samuel Umtiti. He was one of best defenders at that time, but went in to the world cup season injured. Despite this he still played and was a solid defender for France. Despite winning, he never got over the injuries and his form never returned.

Should've made that clearer! I've always assumed that they'll compete in the world cup proper at some point after the U20 world cup, since ending the manga with them winning the U20 version feels like a bit of an odd compromise to me

😢honestly I’m a big chigiri fan but what would be the point of doing that if chigiri is only going to be the best player in the world at that moment? And wouldn’t his acl tear before he scored and change the game? I think something like that will happen but I just hope that the author releases that players in in real life play at the highest level with a ACL injury for example Florian Wirtz that plays for Germany and Marco Asensio who plays has a winger for PSG.

That's fair enough. I guess my thinking here is that, no way how you spin it, Isagi will be number 1 in the end, so having Chigiri briefly be the greatest before him is the best possible scenario for his character
