How Chinese Money is Changing Africa | China/Africa Big Business | Business Documentary from 2013
In this first episode, we look into how China is building a bridge in Tanzania. In the second part of the episode, we look into a group of students training in a joint Chinese-South Africa flight academy in South Africa.
This series looks at how big Chinese enterprises have found a foothold in Africa, how they’ve often had to adapt their approach and strategies to fit the African market, and how Chinese and African employers, employees and business partners have learned from and influenced one another.

For more than 15 years, Jamaica tried to build a main road around the island. They borrowed millions from the US and UK, yet nothing got done. They finally accepted a deal with China and less than 2 yrs the road is done. Yes, there is a toll for use, but it has progressed the country in many ways.

"For more than 15 years, Jamaica tried to build a main road around the island. They borrowed millions from the US and UK, yet nothing got done." Politicians pocket the money themselves and now the people are paying for the "Toll road". If the country cannot pay the money back to the Chinese, they will be able to claim it as their property. China gets a foot in the country through the back door same as they have done with ports built in Sri Lanka and Greece.

For those of you who think that its just debt and financing. Remember that much of Africa has been indebted to the IMF for decades with no such development. Even today, while the west panic about Chinese money being loaned to Africa in huge volumes, African public debt still is about 60-70% to the west and between 10-15% to China. The different in development is that China is building infrastructure and the west conducts extractive investment looking to either seize assets or turn a profit within a few years.
@arnowisp6244
@arnowisp6244 3 года назад
China does the same thing. These infrastructure will soon be leased or partially owned to them as examples like Sri Lanka have shown. They are just more patient about it.
@the1onlynoob
@the1onlynoob 3 года назад
@@arnowisp6244 You miss understand, extractive investment is about removing stuff from countries, whether it is production of labour like shoes or natural resources like oil. In this regard the traditional investments done by the west is highly concentrated in coastal areas as to be easier to ship. It is also the reason why the roads and infrastructure between African nations are lacking in the first place. What China is attempting to do is to build infrastructure to improve economic activity of the nation as to allow it to grow and repay the loan and also develop into consumer markets in the long run. In this regard, they are putting in work on projects that cannot be extracted as they are physically in the country. The arrangement of when debts cannot be repaid and assets are provided instead, ie ‘debt asset swaps’ are the last resort. In fact, other than the Sri Lanka port, China has not done any debt asset swaps with any other major debtor. Where as the IMF has, on numerous occasions, forced nations to part with sectors of it public utilities at the time.

@@the1onlynoob Because there was barely any shipping. China is not a fool and didn't know what the loan was used for and gave it anyway because they'll benefit one way or the other. Another example is Pakistan with 6 billion dollars. Had to give away a deep sea port on a 40 year lease plus China added their naval and air bases. Then Montenegro and their "highway to nowhere" And then finally the Maldives and their billion dollar Chinese bridge...evennthough they will sink by 2080. China only sees Africa as one giant voting block to vote in their favor in the UN.

The most important part is not about the bridge itself, it is about the people who are learning skills, techniques and see things in different ways. And those people who are using the bridges will save time and see progress and hope. The Europeans were very familiar with Africa well before 1492. They saw Africa as a resource to be taken, not as a place for sharing prosperity. When many African tribes declared independence from European colonialism, the Europeans exited Africa leaving next to nothing behind in infrastructure. Unfortunately for many African nations in need of infrastructures, the West and European governments either ignored Africa or demanded political-social changes as conditions for building infrastructure in Africa. On the other hand China doesn’t impose political demands as part of building Africa’s infrastructure. In addition China is willing to partially finance the construction of infrastructure through long term trade. The result is a win-win arrangement that mutually benefit both partners.

Good documentary about China improving African countries and developing locals. Refreshing to hear locals expressing themselves in their languages. FF to 11:00 in SA, then it's the private education benefitting Chinese students with no signs of the locals. Years back it cost around 500K ZAR annually to train as a pilot. We then wonder why certain world icons get to be regarded as sellouts by a growingly frustrated majority that continue to wallow in poverty amid the world's largest inequality gap.

'How Chinese Money is Changing Africa | China/Africa Big Business | ENDEVR Documentary' The idea of 'How Chinese Money is Changing Africa' is misleading. Because if it is China that provides the financing in the cases you are talking about it doesn't follows Africa hasn't to reimburse the financings. Since Africa have to payback, it is not Chinese money that is changing Africa, but Africa's debt to China is changing Africa

The loans allows Africa to obtain funding that other countries are not willing to do. It is high collateral debt for China however the African countries help by repaying them by voting same as China on U.N. decisions.
@bonanza06
@bonanza06 3 года назад
The majority of Africa's debt is owed to the West; China accounts for about 17% of the debt, and the debt owed to China is primarily related to infrastructure projects, which are sorely needed by Africa. Gyude Moore, who served various roles with the Liberian gov't, delivered a very informative presentation in 2019, “China in Africa: An African Perspective”, through the Paulson Institute. Check it out on YT. * John Yossarian did a great service in summarizing most of the main taing points of Gyude's presentation. This summary included: ** Africa lacks infrastructure. Especially paved road and electricity. Only 43% of all roads in Africa are paved. 30% of them in South Africa. ** Because of this lack of infrastructure. Africa's total share of the global trade in 2017 was equal only to South Korea. ** The Chinese showed up and began to build infrastructures that were not based on the old colonial infrastructure model, which was to facilitate the exploitation and movement of resources from the periphery (the African colonies) to the center (Western colonizer countries) and not meant to connect African countries with each other. ** What China is doing now is to build infrastructure to connect African countries and cities, which makes it possible for regional value chain to develop. ** After the end of Western colonialism of Africa, Western states in Africa were replaced with Western companies that negotiated unfair deals with African governments. ** It was the inadequacies of these deals that made African countries welcomed Chinese companies. ** The suitability of China as a partner of Africa lies in the fact that Chinese companies offer to do projects on lower costs when compared to Western companies. ** China's share of total African debt stock is 17%. Most of Africa's debt are owed to multilateral developmental banks and private Western institutions, which is the main driver of debt in Africa. ** There are 54 countries on the African countries. Close to 90% Chinese debt to Africa went to 7 or 8 countries: Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Angola, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo. ** China's presence in Africa has been and continues to be a net positive. The future is unknown. ** Between 2000 and 2019, China has waived, restructured, and rescheduled debt payment 87 times.

@@bonanza06 Dear bonanza: Your analysis is excellent but What An Overkill !!! The bottom line is that Western "aid" to all 3rd World nations has been Predatory. The IMF and the World Bank will only give loans to the 3rd World after extracting "austerity" concessions that are designed to suck that nation dry of profits, raw materials, and cheap labor, all the while laying it bare solely for Rich White Western Corporations to get even Richer. Business is Business but at least the Chinese know how to make friends and alliances in the process. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

'Africa's debt to China' is still Chinese money. Semantics aside, I'd rather have this so-called China's debt-trap diplomacy than the West's aid-trap version that we have lived with for decades. Debt instils discipline in money usage while aid takes away your dignity and turns you into a perpetual beggar. Heck, Africa has been transforming in real-life for the past 10 years. I'm from Kenya and I have seen critical infrastructure happen that I never imagined I'd live to see. The question of how will we pay? Well, these capital projects are enablers of economic growth. We may struggle at first but watch this space, Africa is on the ascent and these loans will be a breeze for us to repay in a not-so-distant future.

Teach people ffishing rather than giving them fishes directly. This is a very simple logic, help Afirca to build infrustrature, it will low the cost of manufcturing, more businiess and companies in Africa will occur.The african government then will have more taxes , people will become richer. Then the debts is nothing compared to that, meanwhile africa can import from China when they become rich. That is why China helps Africa, this is win -win . None western country did before.

I want Africa and china to do as much business as possible and a few years down the line when Africa can’t repay the debts China will take ports and the infrastructure back like in Djibouti and Sri Lanka and then the Africans can stop blaming the west for everything
@class6aa
@class6aa 3 года назад
Blaming? That what the west believes and what’s people to believe. I talked to Sri Lankan friend, he said he preferred China taking over their ports from their corrupted government. He sad it’s ok that China’s taking in come from the port since they can run the port better and that benefits the people more. Lost is to the corrupted government the gain is to the people
@wuduo1230
@wuduo1230 3 года назад
if China didn't build the port, it was just some empty land with little value. what's the downside? at least you'll get a port eventually. You get what you pay for. If they work hard and use infrastructure to boost their economy, they may not default on the loan.

"From a BUSINESS POINT OF VIEW China is a market which cannot be ignored", says that white South African AIFA representative. White South Africans are very pragmatic when it comes to business. They don't let politics come in the way of commerce. We all saw how they were able to adapt from the apartheid regime to the ANC leadership. They thrived under apartheid and they also thrived and are still thriving under the ANC leadership. The western whites can learn a thing or two from white South Africans. They too can do business with China, rather impose trade tariffs and embargoes and 'containment' and so on and so forth.

Well done China. China didnt start to provide assistance to Africa just decades ago. Even during the time of Chairman Mao despite being a poor country then, China helped to build the 1860km Tanzania Zambia or TAZARA railway which was opened in 1975. This showed China's sincerity then as while they need to develop the money to develop their country, they helped other countries because the other countries need the assistance more than them at that time. Almost 1/2 a century on China continues to help Africa and other countries. Of course its understandable for distractors like US and EU countries to paint a negative picture even when in the first place they were the colonizers of Africa for several centuries. They kill Africans, steal their natural resources and now they have the cheek to say China want to confiscate lands in exchange of debts. Isnt that ironic? China just continue to good deeds as usual
