How Christians Roleplay Being Free Thinkers

Christians love to think of themselves as free thinkers. It feels more validating (and sounds better) than accepting what you were taught on blind faith. Thus I've notice a trend, which is that believers like to mimic apologetics by rote as if they were arguments they discovered on some open-ended personal search for truth. This clearly isn't the case. These arguments are not only bad, but are fed directly into church culture by professional apologists and get repeated word-for-word by average Christians. Today I'll examine an example of this reviewing a video by two young people apparently taking their first jab at apologetics. The video is less about arguments for God than it is about telling a story of finding these arguments independently without the help of apologists - and I just find that totally fascinating.

I used to be an evolutionist atheist. I would pray to my Richard Dawkins posters in my room before every meal and paint satanic symbols on churches for a hobby. But then someone told me "If we came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys" and I instantly realized that Jesus is the truth and I instantly became a christian and was saved!

What I'm hearing Mary say is that she surrounded herself with Christian apologetics exclusively until it sunk in, and not once did she look elsewhere for the truth. Not once did she honestly consider the plethora of counter arguments. She didn't go looking for the truth, rather she looked for confirmation of what she already believed. People like this are being dishonest with themselves.

Notice that Christians (every major religion really except for possibly Buddhism) don’t stop on the very difficult step of addressing *which* god is affirmed by the cogito? This gobbledygook in the video is sad - she skips a dozen steps jumping from the “cogito” (which she doesn’t seem to know) proves everything is created by a god…how? Why? Then blah blah fine tuning etc…none of this is logical. Perhaps because one will be forced to make a series of assertions for which there is no evidence? The *cogito* affirms Odin? Vishnu? Osiris? Yahweh? Hmmmmm…

That's the thing. Christians actually need to realize, many Atheists where just like them once. Believed like they do (if they went to same type of church denomination) Same world view and in some cases were more devout than they are right now. Those Atheists went through a process - questions, reading, thinking.... It maybe different for everyone, but in the end they completed their journey out of the Religion and god(s) belief.

@@AdmiralBison In the meantime, for me their big selling point "We have ONE perfect God with ONE perfect word of God" is also the biggest killer. All I see in the universe (and in us) is NOT perfection, NOT static (how shall perfection change?), I see IMperfection, change, variation. No two are alike. It is almost as if this "IMperfection" is a more prevailing principle in reality. I can THINK perfection, but that does not mean it exists. But when we are all different, grow up in VASTLY different environments, in VASTLY different cultures, how can ONE 2,000 year old book (where they deny it has changed not the least by translation) be able to have the perfect message for ANY one of these people in ALL phases of their lives? It would have to when it is the PERFECT word. For some people God makes extra appearances to persuade them individually. But he is omni-benevolent, so ALL people should get this chance from an omnipotent omniscient God. Either God does not exist or these properties of everything is perfect are wrong. The people in America and the aboriginees in Australia had no chance to hear about Jesus until 1492 resp. 1770. So they must all have gone to Hell. The omnipotent God could have appeared on each continent, for each one individually. That hearing about Jesus at some point in your life saves you makes sense only when you think that the world is so small that the message can reach you on foot in one lifetime. Otherwise it is unfair.

This is how it should be, if you're "forced" to drop a deeply held belief, you're less likely to think critically about it. If it's a gradual, one step at a time journey, it becomes a natural transition.

@@feedingravens Yep, I've heard the "perfect" arguments from Religion before - objective unchanging morality, fine tuned Universe etc.. Those arguments are non-sensical, inconsistent and don't apply to reality if one gave more than a second thought to it. In regards to spreading the "word" of the god of the Bible to indigenous people. A god has to rely on - a lone person to tell the tribe he spoke with that god - needs a book to communicate its message - needs missionaries to spread those messages - needs money and tributes It's almost like it's the Clergy and "holy" men that reap all the rewards and have the power...even if they have to make up gods and stories.

Religion, and the supernatural in general, tends to be pretty disappointing in the face of reality. I think (this happened a long time ago at this point so my memory is quite fuzzy) that this is a major part of why I stopped believing. "Why is X the way that it is?" Religion: A wizard did it. Anything else; science, history, sociology, anthropology: Well, there are these complex social and natural factors which interplay in unique ways depending on... Supernatural causes are always the least interesting explanation for anything. The one thing it has over empirical reality is an explanation for what happens when you die. Which is still kinda BS once you understand a little bit about psychology etc. etc.

I distinctly remember many of our plays being scripted dramas where someone would role-play an antagonistic atheist professor or some such, and one of the students would role-play the heroic evangelist protagonist student. In one particular Christmas charade (yes, a Christmas one), the antagonizing atheist professor renounced his prideful folly after the heroic student trotted out the 2nd law of thermodynamics shtick. Zod's video got me reminiscing about this experience. It was something we students did every year for our teachers and parents, and it seemed so normal. The Bible is able to offer testable, verifiable evidence in the form of specific, fulfilled prophecies - in fact, the Bible is about 1/4 prophecy! In addition to the many, many historical examples of fulfilled prophecy, here are just a few that have happened in the past 100ish years. Israel Scattered and returning to her land: Deuteronomy 28:64 says, "And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other...". Additionally, Ezekiel 36:19-24 says, "I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions. And wherever they went among the nations they profaned my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’ I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone. “Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes. “‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land." This is quite amazing. God said He would scatter Israel throughout the world for their disbelief and return them back to their land. What other people in the history of mankind has been scattered across the world for hundreds/thousands of years and then returned to their homeland (the very same geographic land) as an identifiable people? This isn't just being moved from one place to another place after being conquered - it is being literally scattered throughout the world. This is unprecedented throughout the history of humankind and yet the Bible said it would happen way before 1948 when Israel was reborn as a nation. In fact, Jews have been returning to Israel from all over the world such as: China, The US, Japan, Russia, India, France, Argentina, Sweden, Spain, Poland, Canada, the UK, South Africa, etc. The land divided: We are also told the land will be divided in Joel 3:1-2, which says, "In those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will put them on trial for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel, because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land". Notice that last part "...and divided up My land". It was foretold that the land would be divided! Logically, if it weren't divided then God couldn't put the nations on trial for dividing it. Yes, Israel is back in a part of the very same land they used to have just as foretold, but the land has been divided as well (and nations continue dividing and/or trying to divide it to this day). The land was in fact divided by Britain, who was in charge of making this land a place for the Jewish people. Instead much of the land was given to the Arabs/"Palestinians". This was formalized in the United Nations Partition Plan which was adopted by the UN General Assembly On 29 November 1947 Resolution 181. This was written WAY before 1947/1948, yet we now see that the land has been divided by the nations and they keep dividing/trying to divide it. Although this did not actually create the nation of Israel, it divided the ancestral land of the Jews. The country reborn in 1 day: What's more, the Bible said Israel would be reborn as a nation in 1 day. Isaiah 66:7-8 says, "Before she goes into labor, she gives birth; before the pains come upon her, she delivers a son. Who has ever heard of such things? Who has ever seen things like this? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be brought forth in a moment? Yet no sooner is Zion in labor than she gives birth to her children." This happened May 14, 1948 when Israel declared itself to be a nation and President Truman formally acknowledged them as such. Contrast this with the founding of the US - they declared themselves to be a nation with the declaration of independence in 1776, but no countries acknowledged them as a nation at that time. In fact, the first country to declare them a nation was Morocco in 1777 and the first major world power of the time to acknowledge them was France in 1778. Yet, in the case of Israel, Britain's mandate over the land ended at midnight on May 14, 1948 and Israel declared themselves to be a nation and were recognized as a nation in this one day - fulfilling the prophecy with stunning precision! Let's step back now and think about these prophecies. The Bible makes the claim that the Jewish people would be scattered throughout the entire world and return to the very land they were in as an identifiable people. To put into perspective just how bold this prophecy is, this feat has never happened to any other people throughout the history of humankind. In essence, the Bible predicted something that has never happened throughout human history would happen to a specific people long before it happened, and it came to pass exactly as foretold! As if that wasn't enough, it foretold that this very land would be divided among the nations, which we know also happened in 1947/1948 and beyond. Even more, it foretold that the nation of Israel would be "born" in 1 day - which happened with stunning accuracy on May 14, 1948! There isn't any other religion out there that offers these kinds of specific prophecies that we know with 100% certainty were written well before they happened. We don't need to simply have blind faith in something - we should have a good reason for what we believe and the Bible provides it! Why not accept the gift of salvation today? John 3:16:17 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." Additionally, here is a fabulous message illustrating salvation through the account of the thief on the cross. It's only a about a half hour and for something with eternal consequences, it makes sense to at least hear it out right? :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_WKnPfjY2lQ.html

@@justafishingdude The problem with this is people were activly working towards reforming Isreal. A self fufiling prophcy isn't that impressive, it's just a goal. As to countries aknowlaging it as a nation straigt away, sure, some did but there's that word "some". Its also not like the jewish people rolled up on the beaches in one day and declared themselves a nation with the full current borders it had been a building sentiment under the brittish. Your middle point is barely worth adressing, show me a plot of land as large as Isreal that hasn't been divided in the last 2 thousand years or so and I'll be impressed. The land being divided is exactly what you'd expect and mundane claims make for poor propheices. This is assuming that the current instation of Isreal is the one that meets those propheices which of course, not all jews agree with. Do you have any better prophecies cos those weren't very compelling. Also when did this happen? "I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will put them on trial for what they did to my inheritance" hard to call that part of the book a fufiled prophecy when the most specific part hasn't happened yet.

To me, what's crazy is why they think it matters. I mean, it matters to _Christians,_ apparently. If you want to sell books to Christians, you need to be a "former atheist." Or so it seems. But it doesn't make the slightest difference to _me_ if a Christian used to be an atheist. It doesn't matter to me if they're _still_ an atheist. What matters to me is the evidence. If they've got some, let's hear it. If not, then that's all I need to know. But nearly every theist I talk to (online, of course, since none of my Christian friends want to talk about religion) tends to start off declaring that they used to be an atheist. OK. So what? Hey, if that were really true, they'd probably realize how little that matters me or - as far as I can tell - other atheists.

I actually find Mary's story very relatable. I went through several instances - mostly in high school and college - where I would try to determine if my beliefs were justified or not. The problem with my questioning was that it would back up to an assumption I was unwilling to examine or question and then the rest of my reasoning and belief system followed from there. Why am I a Christian? - I believe the Bible. Why do I believe the Bible? - I think it was inspired and preserved by a god. Why should I think this god exists as opposed to gods of other religions? - Because their gods are clearly not real, but mine clearly is. There were definitely more steps in there, but that's a shorthand example of where my reasoning would stop at an unquestionable assumption. Over time that assumption got pushed back further, but there were still a lot of mental shortcuts involved. Eventually I allowed myself to question deeper layers of my fundamental beliefs and my Christianity dwindled down to Theism, then to Deism until one day I had a moment where I looked at it all and went "Oh." realizing I was now an atheist and had fully jettisoned my belief in any sort of god. My belief died not with a bang, but with a sigh. Anyway, my point in telling that story is to show that at that time I though I was doing the work, I felt like I was critically examining my beliefs, and that I think it's entirely possible that Mary believes that she did too. I think it may be a fairly common experience for believers where they begin to question but their indoctrination (both external and self-imposed) stops them from getting past certain core beliefs while allowing them to feel fully justified and rational in those beliefs.

You make some very bold claims, all of which I agree with entirely, that some people could take great offense at. You always do a more than adequate job of preventing any reasonable person from taking offense but that is no guarantee that offense won’t still be taken. Not everyone is willing to accept the consequences that come with that level of honesty. As someone who is, and has paid their own very dear price for it, it is genuinely cathartic to hear your work. We need more like you out there. Looking forward to see your work with Dan!

I agree that the story lacks specifics for her own experience. I also also agree that there is common lingo and memes that are used in idealogical communities in general. That being said, if someone does get interested in a subject and wants to know more, they’re probably going to read or listen to information about it, and they’re going to choose the sources that seem the most trustworthy to them given their priors on the subject. It’s hard to come into almost any subject with no preconceptions whatsoever. Given that, you’d expect this kind of behavior to be the default. She came to it from a Christian background and wanted to confirm her own beliefs so she listened to apologists. Humans are predisposed to adopt the language of those we are in the most contact with. It is a very rare person, indeed, who comes up with truly novel ideas. We call those people geniuses and generally tend to know their names. (e.g. Einstein, Socrates, etc.) So, for the rest of us, ranging from a bit slow to very smart, we listen to what other people say and assess it based on how it fits into our own world models. Another fairly rare trait is the ability to admit that you were wrong and critically examine your beliefs. The more strongly held the belief is, the more jealously we are programmed to protect it. This is a useful adaptation in nearly all circumstances. We would die from analysis paralysis if we reexamined everything we believed every time we got new information. Unfortunately, that useful heuristic of fitting new information into your world model in ways that minimize the change in that model causes us to usually be blinded to our own erroneous thinking. We naturally view contradictory information with suspicion and it tends to just bounce off of the armor that we surround our cores with. So, it is very reasonable to expect people in their positions to speak the way that they do and use common jargon for their communities. It does show a lack of critical thought, but critical thinking is a very rare ability. It took years and years and a lot of pain for me to transition from belief to non-belief. I had to let go of a part of myself in order to do it. It just so happened that I valued truth more than I valued religious belief. And it was a slow road out; I didn’t just go from young earth creationist to atheist in a single step. Every time I revised my beliefs, I took the minimal step to fit the new information into my world model and self image. And once I realized, somewhere deep down, that I was a step away from losing my belief, I shut down for years. I refused to think about it because I knew exactly where I’d end up. I tried desperately to find a way to hold on. I participated in religious rituals that weren’t really within anything I had ever believed, such as catholic communion even though I’ve never been a catholic. I was truly desperate. I got angry when my wife asked me about it because I knew I would end up a non-believer. But, eventually, I had to admit to myself that I had lost belief years earlier. I ended up as a deist at that point, because I couldn’t explain the origin of the Big Bang. It was the last tiny shard of my belief that I could cling to. Then I heard Dr. Krauss talk about it and the final shard sublimated into nothing. Now, even if his explanation is incorrect, I find placing a deity in that location to be an assumption without any basis. At this point, while I don’t believe in it, the only way I can imagine an entity creating our universe is if our universe were a simulation. That would be my assumption if I saw incontrovertible evidence that unexplainable magic existed. By that, I don’t mean something we don’t understand or some new discovery or way of looking at the world. I mean something that is completely incongruous with the well verified laws of nature. I’m talking about someone saying a magic word and then a truly supernatural event occurring. Not like nanotechnology or something explainable if we just understood more and did more research. I mean, if I say “wingardium leviosa” and a dense object floated up with energy from absolutely no physical source whatsoever. That tells me that the universe operates on rules that are not based on fundamental physical forces but arbitrary rules of the kind that a mind might invent. The same thing goes if we suddenly meet a “god” of some kind. Again, not an alien with ridiculously advanced technology (think Thor and Loki from the Marvel movies). A real, scientifically verifiable entity with the kinds of supernatural powers traditionally associated with deities. That does not tell me that there is a creator god or anything of the sort. That tells me that the universe doesn’t make sense and that can only be true in a universe not built on fundamental rules and forces. That kind of thing comes from a mind. In those cases, the hypothesis with the minimal amount of assumptions is a simulation since you are only hypothesizing something that would fit into a universe with such fundamental rules as we observe, instead of an entirely new entity for which we have absolutely no previous evidence or examples of. And no, for any believer who actually read this whole post, the gods of any of our religions are not prior evidence. If you do any kind of honest examination of the evidence instead of just following your instincts, it becomes blindingly obvious how and why religions were invented, why they spread and continued. The fictional nature of the documents becomes so clear that you just can’t see them any other way. Everything that was “mysterious” just starts to make sense and fit together cleanly. You lose that intensely uncomfortable cognitive dissonance you were suffering from. It eventually becomes quite comfortable and reassuring. “The world just makes sense.” It’s much better than “god works in mysterious ways” which is code for, “that thing that we’re talking about makes absolutely no sense and I recognize that fact, but instead of admitting that I might be wrong, I’m going to make excuses and point to some infinity and claim that you have to search the whole thing and disprove all of it to endanger my beliefs. Additionally, I’m going to put my fingers in my ears and sing La-La-La so that I don’t have to actually think that whole thing for fear that it might cause me to doubt myself.” The holes in the religious stories are so enormous that you could drive an aircraft carrier through them without scratching the paint. They’re the kind of thing that a rational adult would never even start to believe. The only way to end up believing them is to be indoctrinated from an extremely young age and exist in a culture that reinforces it. That or to be the kind of credulous person that will fall for nearly any scam you come across.

@DeruwynArchmage
@DeruwynArchmage Год назад
@@thedarknessthatcomesbefore4279 she came to the same conclusion before I did. The reason she was asking was because she was struggling with the same thing. I wasn’t very caring in that moment; one of my less admirable actions. I wasn’t cruel or anything; I just said that I didn’t want to talk about in a brusque fashion because it caused me pain to allow myself to go there. Think of it like someone avoiding a badly needed surgery because they fear the consequences. She isn’t as intelligent or as educated in science as me, but she was better at allowing herself to see the truth. Perhaps her human development courses gave her some insight. Perhaps something else entirely. For me, it was a combination of logic, scientific learning, and reading the Bible that lead me away from faith. Early stuff was me trying to run experiments with probability to see if god would intervene if I asked him to. He didn’t. Most religious people would dismiss it; it left me with a tiny little chip in my armor. I subsequently got even deeper into evangelical Christianity. Later reading about the impossibility of omnipotence on LessWrong (Eliezer perhaps? I didn’t know who he was, or anything about him at the time (maybe 2005 or so?) put a huge hole in it. I couldn’t refute the logic at all, it seemed absolutely air tight. It meant that what I’d been told wasn’t entirely true. I started reading the Bible. I decided to read it beginning to end. My goal was to become a better Christian and follow the laws more closely. Jesus said that he didn’t come to erase the law after all. I stopped eating shellfish and pork. But this time, instead of looking at it from the lens I was told to look at it from, I looked at it as if it could maybe possibly have some flaw in it. Probably it was nearly perfect, I told myself. But humans were involved… so… As I read, I found myself appalled at the cruelty and downright evil committed by the people who were supposed to be the heroes of the stories. One that stood out was when Elisha called a she-bear down from the mountains to eat some boys who called him bald. “Did god do that?!”, I thought to myself. That seems horrible. Eventually I abandoned my attempt to read through the books. I realized my faith was being shaken, not strengthened. By this time, We’d been living in our college town for a few years. We never found a church we liked while we were there. Among my friends, I was still the most religious person, but I was not as fanatical as I once was. Then I graduated and started working. I made friends with some older men I worked with and I joined their D&D group. I’d been playing since late high school. That was another lie the church told me. At first I was terrified when my friends introduced it to me. But slowly, I came to accept that it was just a game and there was nothing nefarious about it. My parents were worried for years, but they eventually came to accept it without concern. Anyway, I made a new group of friends and joined their game. These guys were about 20 years my senior. Well, the DM was gay. I’d never really interacted with a gay person before. At first I was very uncomfortable. But after a while, I realized he was just another guy. He was nice and his game was fun. Who he loved didn’t matter. Another hole in what I was told. And I became a better person too. I don’t think it was very long thereafter, or maybe it was a bit before, I don’t really remember for sure, that I finally ended up just letting go of the idea that the people who wrote the Bible knew anything at all about any potential deity out there. I figured nobody had any clue. By this time all of my crazy beliefs are long gone. I believe in what science says. When I was little I believed that too (dinosaurs were so cool after all, and the discovery channel was my favorite channel), it was only as a teenager and very young adult that I allowed myself to be so very misled. I had always really loved science, I knew I wanted to work in the field even when I was little. And yet, for a time, I thought the universe was 6000 years old. I can’t square that in my head anymore, but I just figured that “those scientists” were mistaken.
@DeruwynArchmage
@DeruwynArchmage Год назад
So anyway, I ended up as a deist. Someone must have created the universe. Maybe they kind of guided evolution. But the scientific understanding of the universe had to be right, it just made too much sense not to. Then, as I said, the final nail was learning that the universe could have come from quantum mechanics. Now, in retrospect, that doesn’t necessarily make sense. For quantum mechanics to be a thing at all, time and space have to have some meaning. Perhaps our universe is an expanding bubble in a universe a layer up from ours, but, if it were a quantum event that triggered it, it had to have a where to occur in and a when to have a duration before it happened and while it happened and afterwards. It doesn’t mean that they have to be identical to what we experience here and now. Maybe there’s a different number of dimensions or time is faster or slower. Maybe the constants of the universe are different or some of them don’t apply in that where and when. But whatever it was like, some really fundamental stuff seems necessary for the opportunity of any kind of spontaneous event to occur, regardless of the details of its nature. So I still don’t have what I would call an origin. And honestly, any origin that we concoct is almost certain to be wrong in some way and I haven’t heard any that actually get you to a first cause. A first cause doesn’t even seem like a particularly coherent thought. I mean, what would that even mean? The first “event”. How could there be a first? Why didn’t it happen sooner or later or not at all? It just waited for infinity time to pass and then happened? That seems nonsensical. What could trigger such an uncaused cause to occur? Oh wait, that’s a contradiction, and contradictions cannot exist; they describe the state of your mind, not reality. So, it seems to me that the cosmos must be eternal. There’s no beginning and no end at all. Our universe certainly seems to have had something like a beginning, but maybe that’s just our bubble and it exists in a “sea” of other bubbles. Who knows, it’s all speculation without basis. In none of that is an agent of any kind implied. And creating a god just kicks the can down one layer without explaining anything that wasn’t already explained. A being that exists outside of space and time? What would that even mean? Perhaps it could exist outside of our own, but it would seem that it would need one of its own, just as much as a bubbling quantum field would and for the same reasons. Why did it wait infinity of its version of time to create our universe? Don’t say it’s timeless, that’s a nonsensical idea. Because, you’re still placing actions and thoughts on this entity you’re postulating and those things occur through cause and effect of some kind, even if it’s somehow different from our own or parallel or up a layer or whatever. One thought leads to the next. Something preceded the action, even if it was just inaction. Such a creature must have changed its mind, otherwise it would have already taken the action it was waiting on. Try saying it didn’t change its mind? Then what was it waiting on? What event external to itself needed to occur before it was “time” to start this universe? One or the other must have delayed the start. Otherwise, if it didn’t delay at all, then it started it the moment it came into existence, mean it wasn’t eternal at all. At least with the quantum foam-y type thing you have randomness and the unlikelihood of that event occurring causing the delay in its initiation. That could be eternal since it doesn’t have to have a changing nature at all. It would mean that we are almost certainly not the first such universe though. There must be infinitely many before us, and infinitely many after too (due to infinite places where it could occur). So, while our time might have started nearly 13.8 Billion years ago, the layer up’s time must have been longer than that. And maybe there are infinite layers up. Maybe our universe has the chance of spawning new daughter universes of its own, and they’re just so rare that we can never observe it happening. None of this tells us why there’s something rather than nothing. And the best I can tell, that’s just not an answerable question. So, a supreme deity with anything like the trait’s Christianity (or any other religion) ascribes to it? Total nonsense. There’s just no reason to think so. It seems essentially unknowable in that way. Now, a far more mundane creator (of our simulation)? Not impossible. I’ve got absolutely no evidence for it beyond the theory that we could make one ourselves in our own distant future. But as to the nature of that creator? We can only attempt to deduce that from the particulars of how our universe works. Morality? Seems probably kind of amoral. Perhaps it doesn’t think of us as “real”, if so, they seem to be mistaken since we all think we feel pretty real. The best we can tell, they set up some rules for their simulation and just let it run. Perhaps they modeled on their own reality. Perhaps not. If we’re not an approximation or perhaps an essentially identical copy of their universe, then they created an awfully boring universe for a fictional realm. I would certainly be more creative. I mean, nearly the entire thing is empty and boring. That’s a really really really wasteful simulation. Why would you do that unless you were actually trying to model something about your own universe. Perhaps they’re trying to see how a society would develop if they were alone in the universe (or alone enough that we might as well be alone). But if I were modeling a universe for entertainment, it would be way more interesting. It would have magic or sci-fi stuff or an actual narrative of some kind. Not just eternal nothingness and essentially random results and a society that is mostly just frustrating. So that leaves us with a simulation that actually reflects their own universe and maybe they’re trying to learn something. If so, we may be super unimportant to their sim. Certainly on an individual level. They might be wondering how likely we are to blow ourselves up, or die off, or expand into the cosmos. If that is true, then we better get to it before they get bored or run out of funding. But I still don’t find any of that particularly compelling compared to the the more parsimonious answer of “it just happened at random, there’s no reason why, you exist because you exist.”

I don't know, we as humans don't know... but that's why we invented science... and question everything.... I doubt we will ever actually fully understand the beginning of the universe, if that's actually even a sensible question, but we will probably get a good handle on the very early dynamics of this iteration of the universe, but what happened pre-plank time is probably beyond us. I think D&D and orher frp games are very good for children, one it definitely introduced me to more mythologies (even if at a rather superficial level) and got me interested in them and it requires you to put your self in someone else's head, your character, and that improves your self reflection ability and your ability to understand people of a different mind set.

Even then I was very skeptical of the stories because not only did they all sound the same, but I only knew a couple of atheists irl in the Bible belt of the South so where were all these atheists coming from? When I'd look into it or ask questions, I always found that they were never actual atheists. At best, they had been non-practicing Christians. Some thought that because they questioned the existence of god at some point (but never stopped believing) that made them an atheist. A lot of Christians don't understand what an atheist is and most leaders don't want to honestly explain it to them.

To be charitable, perhaps she didn't have all this vocabulary when she first began exploring the causal chain of the universe (which isn't beyond a college freshman) and this is just her brain backfilling rough concepts with the better vocabulary she now knows when looking back at college.

Maybe.. But why does not she tell she figured it out by herself and found same answers in apologists books? Why not tell " i read this Mc dowell book and i could finally put words on my conclusion ' instead of playing surprise when her husband names the kalam? She must be dishonnest. She knows perfectly where she found her explanations and plays dumb (well... smart?)

Yeah, I'm willing to go with that. I spent a loooot of time in my late teens-early twenties thinking about determinism and free will without really having any kind of language to talk about it. It wasn't til later that I learned about determinism as a concept and the different kinds etc. etc. You can be exposed to a concept through cultural osmosis and do a whole lot of the legwork on your own. With the caveat that you're necessarily going to be missing some of the pieces.

When I first started college, I was sat under an apple tree one day when a piece of fruit fell to the ground. I wondered to myself why it fell straight down, rather than sideways or straight up. I deduced that there must be some sort of force pulling it toward the Earth

I was a theist…until I was maybe 6yo. My deconversion story: My dad handed me a picture Bible for kids. I read it and thought “Yeah, well this obviously isn’t true”. A few years later, after reading the complete Bible as a Catholic School kid, that position evolved to “Holy shit! This book is absolutely insane”

Our feelings emerge out of the subconscious mind and our conscious minds try to describe it and make sense of it after. But they are two different things. That is why it is difficult to define things like love, beauty, and belonging. They arise out of the shadows, then we describe them into awareness. Belief in god feels as tangible to us as love, but love is an internal experience. The only physical expression of it is what we chose to do in response, and religion is the same. The Bible was written (by people) in response to a belief in god. Churches are built (by people) in response to a belief in god, and wars are fought and lands taken and the losers made slaves.

There is no such thing as punching down. Bad ideas are bad ideas, no matter how many followers you have. I absolutely believe they are lying. They are telling a story that is absolutely not true, in order to lead people they hope are in the audience to a conclusion they desperately want them to reach. You know what we call that? Being a con man! That's what religion is!

People should realized that be obsessed with something you do not even believe is something stupid and that they are into a modern cult (called atheism) where the maximum you can do is to be a godless and soulless alone person and run to kiss godless ass whenever you seen it (why they do not get it, and persist to do that?)... which is pretty disgusting. No God, no Soul, no Dignity and no spirituality, a wasted life (only a godless hypocrite would deny it)... as always godless alone people have nothing to offer to us, even to themselves, but their lonlyness (without God)...God is always they do not know in their miseable alone life. No respect for you.

Most of the "I used to be an atheist" stories that I've heard aren't lies, it's usually that they came from a background that didn't talk about religion. They were apathetic atheists, which is in stark contrast to ex-Christians who fully understand both sides of the arguments and came to a reasoned conclusion that it was false.
