For-profit companies Plastic Bank and RePurpose Global are incentivizing plastic collection and recycling in developing nations, and selling plastic credits to companies looking to offset their new plastic production. But while funding the development of recycling ecosystems in areas with poor waste management infrastructure is undeniably positive, some experts are concerned that the emerging plastic credits market will distract from the systemic changes that are truly needed to end plastic pollution.

Why don't we look at the actual producers of these bottles? Coca Cola , Pepsi Co., Nestle, Unilever? If they stopped using this thing that they know is environmentally unfriendly the problem of single use plastics would be solved. Instead, they have good PR teams putting the sole onus of responsibility on the individual. In reality it takes producers, consumers and regulators working together to fix this.

This is a sad story. Rich countries buying extremely cheap labor to make themselves and customer feel better. This is hardly a solution of any sort. I’d gladly pay extra for using recycled materials but everyone just want’s everything as cheap as they can get it.

Fair point but when you say "YOU would gladly" pay doesn't mean everyone in the rich countries would gladly as the median income people these days survives paycheck to paycheck buying the cheapest they got, if all prices rise 20% or more because of greener solutions there would be caos and suffering for the people that are barely making it these days.

Lets be real here "we" the customer didn't ask for any of this, labor didn't move over seas because people demanded lower prices they moved because the companies responsible wanted higher profit margins. They wanted lower prices so they could run their competition out of town. If they could legally pay people here the way they do over seas they absolutely would, they sure as hell try.

it is amazing that we only see an alternative to plastic through profit mechanisms. When you say that in the US it is cheaper to buy new plastic than to recycle and take it as a natural law that companies have the right to pollute the world for centuries in exchange for a higher profit margin the catastrophe is inevitable. What a brilliant idea to create plastic credits, have you looked at how carbon credits are working? I recommend a look at the latest IPCC report... not all solutions come by market means. We need to impose sanctions on plastics immediately. All waste is a design error.

I've paddled all over the U.S., steams, rivers, lakes and coasts, and it is very distressing to see the amount of plastic and other waste littering our country. I always clean up the area around where I camped, but there is a limit to what one person in a kayak or canoe can do. We simply must ban single use plastics especially those that can be replaced with very recyclable aluminum (drink containers) or a reusable substitute (carry bags).

Companies like rePurpose are not the silver bullet solution but are absolutely needed to bridge the gap of where we are now to where we need to be on dealing with the global plastic crisis and frankly climate justice in general. What sets rePurpose apart, from my point of view, is that they require companies to do the internal circularity work (reduce plastic usage, incorporate more PCR, transition to other better materials etc.) while in parallel working with them to take action on plastic that they cannot yet design out of or that will take time to address. It's not a pay to pollute structure, it's a fix your mess internally and externally structure while we find a better way to circulate goods to 8 billion humans. I think what a lot of people don't understand is that everyone, all companies, all the global leading organizations are looking for scalable alternatives to plastic (and disposable packaging overall) but there aren't yet (technology-wise) many packaging formats that fit into companies' current supply chains or that they are willing to take a big bet on that do the following: 1) keep their products and ingredients safe for use and shelf stable 2) create fewer lifecycle-wide negative environmental impacts (more emissions, more energy use for manufacturing or cleaning, etc.) and that 3) will be purchased by consumers because people expect to get a specific type of product in a specific type of packaging As such it's going to take many more years for us to execute on what the WWF is calling for in this video and what rePurpose and other similar companies are proposing is to do something better than litter, burn and dump plastic in the interim. Plastic (and other waste) is and will continue to end up in places where there is NO infrastructure to deal with it (knowingly and unknowingly), create cascading environmental impacts and continue the ongoing humanitarian crisis of the impacts of mismanaged waste -- where people are bearing the brunt of climate change despite having virtually not contributed to it from a human development standpoint. Why is it that environmental companies that make money advancing some part of Sustainability get scrutinized for increased revenues but companies that are selling products that are bad for us and bad for the planet are on a pedestal for holding our economy together -- and where this journalist probably has stocks invested?

I love the video! It's very insightful! It clearly shows the huge gap between how developed and developing countries manage our waste. However, the lack of proper waste management, especially regarding plastic, will eventually become OUR problem as we share the planet and its oceans! We cannot wait for the most effective solutions; we must start NOW! At Plastic Bank, our goal is for businesses to reduce their plastic use and reuse recycled plastic as much as possible. While we work on the complexities of converting to recycled plastic, we can begin by offsetting our plastic footprint through plastic credit programs. At least we are taking action and trying to make a difference.

Wow! Repurpose Global is doing an amazing job. I believe that every big company above a certain scale should make it mandatory to finance waste management infrastructure in order to prevent plastic from polluting the environment. This is an ingenious idea because it provides environmental benefits, creates economic opportunities for the unorganized waste management sector, and promotes innovation that breeds healthy competition in this space. If all companies had to finance this operation, they would be forced to become conscious of the quantity and quality of waste they emit.

DON’T FORGET! Only a small percentage of recycled waste collected in first world country actually gets recycled. The rest gets dumped in third world country. In the U.S., this program could work for homeless people who like collecting and recycling things for money. I'm surprised there's not already a pilot program in effect already. I really want to learn of the REAL nonsensical reasons why it isn't economically feasible to recycle plastic in the U.S.. It's ridiculous that any country, no matter how wealthy or poor they are, should be overly reliant on other countries to recycle their own recyclables for them. If anything, the UN should make it a goal for all member states to have their own methods of recycling that discourages them from exporting it to be recycled.

There should be big plastic recycling factories outside of every city that collects and recycles plastic for the given city. It should be non-profit and there should be bins in every street to be collected. When you consider the amounts of money spent by the government on uselsee things, 20-30 million dollars every year for plastic neutral cities are nothing. There should be laws that state plastic used by the companies on their products should be compatible with those recycling factories processes. These changes will happen in the future but it will happen when it's too late and when we already see the impact on our daily lives.
