Here's what we know about climate change and hurricanes.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
We know that humanity's carbon footprint has shifted the baseline conditions of the climate, the context in which every weather event takes place. But trying to isolate the human influence from everything else that is going on can be really hard, especially for hurricanes, or what scientists call "tropical cyclones."
They're super complex and the quality of the historical data we have for them isn't great. We do have physics, though. Hurricanes are driven by the transfer of heat from the sea to the air through evaporation. The storm's maximum possible wind speed, or its potential intensity, depends in part on how warm the ocean is - and of course, we're warming the ocean.
So researchers expect intense tropical cyclones to become frequent if we continue to warm the planet.
The hurricanes of the future will also be wetter. So coastal cities will face freshwater flooding from the sky paired with storm surge from the sea, which is higher now because we are also causing sea levels to rise. And that trend of wetter storms isn't just for hurricanes. Heavy precipitation events from other types of storms have been increasing in The US and should continue to increase across the country. Even in places that might see less rain over the whole year, they'll get more days with really heavy precipitation.
This comes down to basic physics too: warmer air can take up more water before it dumps it back down on us. All of this means global warming worsens floods like the kind that hit Houston.
But it's not our destiny to hurt ourselves like this. It depends on what we choose to do now. We could rethink our infrastructure and regulations to minimize the damage, but unless we also start cutting our carbon emissions and shifting the world to clean energy, it's just going to get worse.

Climate change is a natural phenomenon that has been occurring since long before humans walked the earth. Hence the ice age. What you are talking about is global warming and no that doesn't exist.

Global Warming is happening. The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia. Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate. The heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide and other gases was demonstrated in the mid-19th century. Their ability to affect the transfer of infrared energy through the atmosphere is the scientific basis of many instruments flown by NASA. There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response. Ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in greenhouse gas levels. Ancient evidence can also be found in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rocks. This ancient, or paleoclimate, evidence reveals that current warming is occurring roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming. I think most of your sources are biased towards proper science. It's like those Vegan advocates sites where they cherry pick bits and pieces to support their ideology. citing single peered reviewed paper won't help much because you must look at a body of studies in order to get a clear whole picture. In fact there are simple ways to tell how much GHG has been contributed by burning fossil fuels by measuring isotopes of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen. This is that simple, basic chemistry concept... you don't need to be a chemist to understand it. Why so many people cannot comprehend it? it is because most people lack the basic scientific literacy to understand these very basic things. Al Gore is NOT a real scientist, I personally ignore him.

Socialism Will Rule Well as a Socialist, I support the economic system that is used in Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Scotland, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland and soon Ireland: Social Capitalism. Essentially things like education, healthcare, WSP among other things are government controlled and funded, whilst things like the maximum wage, living wage = minimum wage and gradual tax brackets all result in everyday workers earning more for working hard rather than the CEO gaining 99% of the profit. For Example: Scotland under Thatcher was decimated: everything was trialed in Scotland, if it failed, it was kept in place, if it was successful, it was stopped and implemented in England. Scottish people were poor, up until it received its own Parliament and in 2007 under the SNP, Social Capitalism was adopted - now we're the second richest region in the UK after London with a GDPpc of $45,000, and increasing rapidly. Capitalism works if it's not crony, corprocratic nor plutocratic. Just thought I should clarify that for you.

@lilaclizard4504

oh it doesn't seem it is! It seems American businesses are more than happy to close down. It's only countries like Germany and China that refuse to stop making money and instead decide they are going to expand their renewable energy production and create millions of new jobs in the process & massive profits for their country & workers. American companies overall seem quite happy to insist coal is best while watching their businesses die as a result

Here is the problem: we CANT fix it right now. There is no way to fix this "climate change" unless we are able to do it without setting back over 300 years of technology progress. Meaning we can't just instantly halt all use of fossil fuels and electricity instantly, we must first come up with alternate ways of travel, (Air, ground, and sea) electricity production, (enough to supply ALL of the United States) and other things. If you want to complain about it then give solutions.

One thing about the amount of rain: Higher average temperature would cause an increased amount of rain due to stronger convection in the mid-latitudes (30-60 meridians), but at the same time it causes the Hadley cell to widen, thus reducing the precipitation in the subtropical heights (10-30 meridians).

Ok so... the main reason why hurricane Harvey has resulted in so much flooding is mainly because it stalled out and there wasn't anything going on in that part of the atmosphere to move it away from that area. So it's basically a hurricane/tropical storm hovering over the same location for days. Texas is relatively flat so it doesn't weaken storms as quickly as mountainous terrain. However, that being said, hurricane Harvey developed extremely quick (rapid intensification). It basically went from being a disorganized storm to a category 4 monster within 48 hours (maybe a LITTLE more or less, don't quote me on that). This kind of intensification occurred mainly due to the favorable atmospheric conditions and the extremely warm ocean temperatures. So yes, global warming can lead to stronger storms developing quicker due to the warmer seas but the main reason why Harvey was/is so bad was because it stalled out, pouring endless rain on the area not really because of its strength. I do agree we need to reduce our carbon footprint and we need to worry about climate change because it is real. There's a lot of different things that make up hurricanes and the damage they do. Harvey is a very special case.

Houston also flooded because of development. All the parking lots and asphalt and destruction of natural ground in the floodplains lead to the flooding.

One thing I hate seeing on the internet are people saying Harvey came out of no where & was unpredictible. Meteorologist were warning about the stagnant pressure & the threat of major flooding the week (Monday) before landfall. Watch hurricanetrack's August 21 & August 22 discussion. I still remember getting chills because he doesnt say things like that unless he is absolute certain. Also when watching the KHOU livestream once it got over Houston, I still remeber the discussion between the news lady & meteorologist. The news lady said she remember the meteorologist telling how bad it was going to get on the Monday before but she didnt think it was going to be that bad

Climate change is not man-made. Our climate is changing from warmer years to colder years. Some years are much colder or warmer than other years. These type of events have been going on forever. If this was man made, we would be in MUCH rougher shape. The same goes for the sea level. Ice melts, sea levels increase a bit. But 1 little iceberg from Alaska isn't going to cause sea levels to rise 3 inches. Sea levels increase and sea levels decrease, I think people are getting confused with earthquakes and land movement and such. Icebergs melt and ice bergs regrow. During the summer time, it is more common for ice bergs to collapse, in the winter, it's less common. Man made "Global Warming" Is not real. The land warms and cools like it always has. But the CO2 does vapor off before it could even effect the climate of the earth.

Not much context here. I would've rather seen a video on how to contribute to those affected or something alike Edit: I know global warming is an issue, i just felt that this video tried to push a narrative that said "global warming is real" which we already know. It's a fact and those who don't accept it won't be convinced by simple measures, let alone a video that provided sketchy statistics. I felt that they should've tried to take the opportunity to use their platform to aid those affected

Rene Garcia that might be the wrong approach to take. Bringing facts into it makes the whole situation harder to understand and accept. What vox does here is humanise it. They remove the factual arguments and focus on how it affects us. A lot of people will straight up turn something of if they don't like it and tons of facts while increase the likelihood ox that

"The rhetoric about Harvey and climate change will continue because it helps zealots create a scary image about the future. The reality, however is much different. As Roger Pielke recently pointed out, it has been 12 years since we have been hit by a category 3 or higher hurricane. Both the IPCC as well as the US National Climate Assessment program indicate that here has been no longer increase in hurricane frequency or intensity."

I have been studying historical weather events for a very long time. Now I'm trying to make a comparison between severe weather events of the 300 yaer period prior to 1700 and to the present. This has been quite difficult and non conclusive. as for t anthropogenically induced CO2 into the troposphere and its causes is a no-brainer.

Thats not what causes storms to have more energy. What happens is the greater difference between hotter and colder results in more storm energy. Thus when you warm the arctic more than the equator, you get less energy. That is what we are seeing.

More category 3 and greater hurricanes, more precipitation leading to worsening flooding, and the inexorable rising sea level swallowing lowlying cities ~ places that already see these sorts of conditions hitting them will face more extreme weather events in the near future until collapse ... that said, it's not all doom and gloom ~ we still have time to shift our civilization towards renewables and prepare the infrastructure needed to protect vulnerable locales ...

@lilaclizard4504

That applies to factory farming only! Proper managed rotational grazing is carbon sequencing 100 tonnes of carbon from the air per hectare per year. If everyone doubled their meat consumption but demanded it came from fully grass fed animals, we'd see a return to pre-industrial CO2 levels without doing anything else! If vegan diets were widely adopted, they would destroy the planet far more quickly and completely than the current system is! The only reason they don't is the current low uptake levels

Climate change is 100% real but the way it affects storms is sketchy. The 2004 and 2005 hurricanes were stronger and more numerous. The last major hurricane to strike the US before Harvey was 13 years ago. You can't just use one storm to say GLOBAL WARMING IS CRAZY. Harvey just happened to hit a major city. The fact is intense hurricanes and tornadoes have been happening for hundreds of years. And I don't know where they are getting their statistics about rainfall either. No one knows for sure.

@PoliceTelephoneBox

Never claimed it didn't. But the leftist argument is given that individual weather events/yearly temps don't disprove climate change. However when natural weather related disasters happen, we get stories like this one. They did admit they aren't sure what will happen with storms in the future, but they're still pushing the climate change "apocalypse". The fact is we can't stop climate change w/ out going to pre industrial standards of living which would kill huge amounts of the population. We should focus on existing power solutions like modern nuclear and work on developing fusion and solar energy through the free market.
