Excellent review. I love colorscience and skinbetter sunscreens. I mostly use the colorscience during the daytime. If I'm going out a night, I love to use the skin better compact.. keeps me matte and protected from blue light at the same time. 🥰

Blue light is primarily emitted from the sun more than cell phones, laptops, lighting etc. But if you want to be extra, extra vigilante, then sure. I would rather save the sunscreen for the daytime because they best sunscreens that are also cosmetically elegant, tend to be more expensive. I already run through sunscreen as it is, can’t imagine wearing it at night too!

Unfortunately no. Skinbetter sunbetter tinted compact and lotion are silicone based but they do not have that silicone feel. Alastin has a strong silicone feel to it. The colorescience powders don't but I would not recommend them as primary sunscreen and they don't give the coverage flex does.

Is there a tinted sunscreen that you would recommend for sweaty days? I have a small butterfly gardening RU-vid channel, I film a LOT outside and I live in Florida. I do like a tint and I need something that won’t sting my eyes. (I know, that is a lot ask for. 😉😉)
@theocbeautymd
@theocbeautymd 3 года назад
That really is tricky. For the sun protection of being outside all day, I would reach for the skinbetter science lotion sunscreens. They have the best UVA and UVB protection. The problem is that the tinted one leaves a bit of a glow which you definitely don't need in Florida but the matte one is sheer. What I do when I want a bit of tint and no glow is apply the colorescience powder on top. The powder is great for all occasions as a touch up. I hope that helps ☺️

Just found your channel and subscribed. I love learning about skincare and love all mineral sunscreens that I can use instead of foundation. This one is outstanding and I agree a bit more skin like than the original. I am dry and don't find it all that moisturizing but am still enjoying the beautiful skin like finish. The medium is slightly light for me during the summer so I may pick up the tan to mix with it. I work at home and spend a great deal of time in front of a computer screen so I enjoy the blue light protection. I used Elta MD elements if I am going to sweat or be near the water.

I have sensitive, oily/normal skin. I've read that tinted sunscreens can aggravate the skin - is there any truth to this statement? I love the benefits that you mentioned about the Colorscience Flex.
@theocbeautymd
@theocbeautymd 3 года назад
Generally chemical sunscreens can irritate sensitive skin. Mineral sunscreens are not absorbed and stay on the skin surface and even have soothing properties so they can be good for sensitive/rosacea skin. In terms of pigments, some people can be allergic to iron oxides but it isn't common. In terms of tinted sunscreens it could depend on what ingredients are used to produce the color but generally speaking the colorescience and skinbetter sunscreens are even safe on post procedure skin so they should not be irritating (even the tinted formulations).

I’ve been really enjoying your videos and even made purchases after your recommendations. I appreciate the reviews with the scientific reasoning behind it when we are constantly being lured by marketing. Would you please explain how the blue light from electronics affect our skin? Does it promote aging like UV rays and pollution? I work in high tech and I’m in front of 3 large computer monitors all day. I’m wondering if I should be more mindful about blue light protection in my skin care. Thank you so much!
@theocbeautymd
@theocbeautymd 3 года назад
Great question. The blue light of concern is on the visible light spectrum. Studies show that most of the blue light exposure we get is actually from the sun but there is some from screens for sure. Think of a dark room that has the TV on, the lighting in the room from the tv is bluish, right? I would say any colorescience and Skinbetter science sunscreen will keep you well protected from blue light and yes I would wear it for work. The other concern I will mention is eye protection. If you wear glasses you can get blue light protection lenses and if you don't, you can get glasses without a prescription just for working. People say that their eyes get less fatigued when they have blue light protection while staring at monitors all day. Most optometrists should offer this and an online company I know of is BluBLOX www.blublox.com/?currency=USD I hope this helps!

For me, I purchased the tan shade in the Flex. The original was too peach and light. The tan was the right shade, but the wrong undertone. It just looked fake on me. It looked like I was walking around with a fake tan. It could be because I have an olive undertone. Alastin has a better undertone for me. The Flex in the tan almost pulls a little orange. Perhaps, I need to order the medium shade.
@theocbeautymd
@theocbeautymd 3 года назад
I know exactly what you mean. The colorescience colors are tricky because of the iron oxide pigments. The skinbetter sunscreens have that deeper undertone with no orange at all, so that's something that might work for you as well. The compact is the most pigmented for that light tan look.

@theocbeautymd

Hi, I'm debating between the SkinBetter Science compact in Tone Smart or Sheer. I want it to use over foundation (which I need to cover melasma) as a SPF touch-up throughout the day. My concern with the tone smart is that I don't want to add color or change the color of my foundation. Does the tone smart do that? I'm a black woman with a light complexion. I'm not sure how to describe myself....lets just use Beyonce's skin tone as a match :-) Would the tone smart work for Beyonce/me? Or should I go with the sheer to be safe? Thanks
