wow. Absolutely the 4th monkey should be included! I am curious though......that shrine.....I vaguely remember about some Chinese actor being effectively 'cancelled' because of taking a picture there recently. Not trying to cause drama here, but genuinely curious about China's take on Japan getting rid of one of the monkeys? Or is it even an issue?

I really like your videos, they are very interesting. Hope you can make lots of this kind of videos. I enjoy them very much. I also would like if you could do themes like everyday-life in ancient china with a bit more details. But the topics you made ‘till now are all fantastic. Keep going!

Interesting. I read a different story in a book of fables when I was a child also featuring 3 monkeys doing the gestures, which I thought was the origin of the emojis. A man has 3 pet monkeys, and together they witness a robbery. The man is afraid he's gonna go to jail for being in the scene, and asks the monkeys what he should do if they come across police. The first covers his eyes, as in "say you saw nothing", the second covers his ears as in "say you heard nothing", the third covers his mouth as in "say nothing", the lesson being don't get yourself involved in the mess in the first place. ... I never quite understood how this was supposed to be a "good" lesson; the man just witnessed a crime. By keeping quiet he's assisting the criminal. Bystander syndrome is a real thing, and it kills people. I like the Confucius story much better.

Actually I thought of the quote the first time I saw them, so I looked them up online and learned more about their journey in Japan ;)

The most forgotten Commandments are the 0ᵗʰ & 4ᵗʰ : • *Lúnyǔ 2.2* 『思無邪』Think No Evil • *Lúnyǔ 12.1* 『非禮勿動』Do No Evil

Wrong. 思無邪 comes from the 詩經. In it 邪 means 不偏、不正 not 邪惡. Don’t be improper doesn’t mean do no evil.

@@Liliquan The First Attestation ever is 《詩經•頌•魯頌•駉•亖》『思無邪』. 邪 meant Evil even back then. Even 不正~歪 can carry the specific connotation of Evil. My original post was referring to The Analects: 《論語•為政、顏淵》 ﹃ 🐵思無邪 Think No Evil 🙈非禮勿視 See No Evil 🙉非禮勿聽 Hear No Evil 🙊非禮勿言 Say No Evil 🐒非禮勿動 Do No Evil ﹄

I like the word " improper" better than " evil" which is something inherently bad but the doctrine says people are inherently good.
