Hey John, you talked about people who were in Japan during the occupation. Did you know that there were Japanese-American GI's, I'm talking about nisei, second generation Americans, sons of the first generation that immigrated from Japan, that were part of the American military occupation? Isn't that just mind-blowing? The reason I know about this is because my dad was one of them. He was stationed in Kyoto and Kokura. My relatives in Hofu City in Yamaguchi Prefecture have a picture of him in uniform when he visited them once. I can't imagine how strange it must of felt for him.
Holy smokes! That is such an interesting topic to cover. I wonder how they may have felt, visiting Japan for the FIRST TIME!! I’ll try to find some people who were here. I want to save voices of those who know the past, seen it change.
Another interesting fact about my family’s history, and probably many Japanese-American families at the time, is that my grandparents sent some of my aunts and uncles to Japan to live with their grandparents to help take care of the grandparents. When WWII broke out many of them were stuck in Japan until war ended. My uncles and aunties on my dad’s side were able to come back after the war. On my mom’s side, her brother was recruited into the Japanese Army (even though he was American) and died in China. My mom’s older sister married someone, had a family, and remained in Japan…but she was born in Hawaii. I’m sure there’s many stories like that.
"What happens in Roppongi stays in Roppongi, or gets reported on this show". 😂 I loved the stroll through Roppongi! I love the streets and I loved how uncrowded it is. I am envious of all those who are going to be touring with you to see the fireworks show! That is going to be one heck of an experience, and for those who can, definitely sign up for it!!! PS: I love the faux mohawk at the end. It had a life of its own! Have a great weekend, John!
Hi John, it’s our last full day in Japan. It’s been a very fun whirlwind 2 weeks through Japan. I’m already planning a solo Japan trip in Spring 2024 to focus more on temples & shrines. Love this livestream through Roppongi. My 1st time living in Tokyo (Chofu) in 1988-89 Roppongi was the place for nighttime entertainment, especially for Gaijin to gather. You’d always see very tall thin American & European models walking around Roppongi. This is where they’d stay when they’d be doing photo shoots in Tokyo, etc. And I actually lived in Roppongi during my 2nd time living in Japan in 1993. You’re right. At nighttime you knew to be very careful not to wander into the “wrong” bar.
That was fun getting to see the screenshots of you on National TV earlier today. Thanks for sharing. A few moments ago I pulled up some photos I took in July of 1969 while attending the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto concurrent with Man's First Landing on the Moon on this July 20th (here in the U.S.) anniversary date. As I looked at the gathered crowds there in 1969 I was struck by how all the men were wearing white shirts. Then I linked to your livestream and there you were playing retro homage to that era (and its singular most important event - the Moon Landing- on July 20th, 1969) with your wearing of a white shirt and tie. 🌛👨⚕
When I posted earlier from another device that identifies me as NorthbyNorth I had expressed appreciation for your sharing the screen shots of you on National TV today. Now that I have had a chance to watch through may I give added thanks. Much appreciated is your included philosophical commentary. What a great perspective you shared in relating that for you it is about making TV appearances fun by helping to make the others in the studio better once that recording light goes on. That despite admitting being nervous yourself before the cameras roll. Dale
Thank you for showing Roppongi! Brought me back to my days waaaaay back in the late 80's to 90's when Gas Panic was where I was almost every weekend! I just visited Japan in May but due to so many places to get too, I never made it to Roppongi. 😢 Next trip, which I'm already planning, I'll for sure go and pay a visit to that area as well as try and find you to get me a "You Found Me Card"!!! ❤ Thank you for this episode down a memory lane for me! With Love, From Dallas TX
We experience over tourism here in Norway too, in certain cities, due to cheap NKR ( Norways currency ) and due to the extreme heat in South Europe, its perfect for the industry, but it can be too much sometimes. Especially for the people who live there.

Hey, John, could you do a live stream from Hinode Pier and Takeshiba Port when the Tokai Kisen fast ferry leaves for Oshima and maybe, if you have time walk from there to Tokyo Tower?
Hey John! Thanks for the stream! Was just in Tokyo last week for a vacation/belated honeymoon (wife and I got married in January 2020 with the original plan for May 2020, but...). Definitely had a fun time with mostly Akibahara, Shibuya/Harajuku, Shinjuku, and DisneySea as our main highlights. We actually stayed at an APA Hotel (268) in Chuo-ku, and we really liked how centralized it felt with the stations and how quiet the area was. Definitely looking forward to coming back to Japan again in the near future to explore more! One quick question. Your messenger bag looks really comfy and supportive. Do you happen to remember the brand/bag name? Thinking of picking it up or something similar!
Hi John, Chris Abroad just published a book called…Abroad in Japan. So from that idea…I wonder if you can write a book entitled…Only In Japan…you can incorporate all your ideas into this one book. The title…only in Japan is a very unique title…I am sure that people would love to read your book…what do you think?
Hello John, great to see you and always great to learn and seeing Japan. I’m hoping to see Japan. It will be my very first time when I get there. I’m from Littleton Colorado USA 🇺🇸
Hi John. Man.... I've been missing your livestreams. Timing for me has been a bit off. Sorry about that my bro. Loving the hairdo! Not used to seeing you without your hat. This is one of the many places in Japan that I really want to visit. Thanks to you 😊. Beautiful day as well.
Sorry about that Michael. I’ll be doing them more often rest of the month. Try different times. Yeah, no hats in the studio 😂 but they use pictures of me with a hat so I comfortable. Hahaha
@@onlyinjapanGO Haha... you look great either with or without a hat my friend. But have to say, I'm more partial "with" the hat. It's synonymous with John Daub. Like Tiger Woods and his Nike golf cap. 😊👍🏻
Back in 90s, before Internet era, many gaijins went to Roppongi to meet new “friends.” I met my husband at a bar there and we’ve been happily married for 27 years. Now people use online matchmaking services, social media etc to meet new people and don’t have to go there anymore. Still there are lots of bars and restaurants in Roppongi but people go for good food and drink, not for boys and girls. Things changed a lot.
I was in Tokyo Japan way back in 1982-83. I stayed in Fuchu City, Tokyo Japan... Aittai ne, i missed the place so much. How i wish mata ne'.... But i know it's impossible for now... I missed my koibito too, HIDEMI SAN..🥰💔💜 Gengkidesuka? Wasurenaide ne... Aishiteru ZUTTODESU.🥰💔💜🇯🇵⛩️🎎
HEY MAN..sorry to ask but ...not a SUMO fan? I am not much of a Grateful Dead head...But I am a SUMO Head..a show where your a SUMO roadie? Is there such a thing? I get it if you not a SUMO fan..
Luckily I visited in Nov 2008 less tourists and very warm with autumn colours. I won a comp with Sony who took us around Japan paying for everything. We visited Roppongi, ate at the Gon Pachi restaurant and also went to the Cavern Club to see the Japanese Beatles! Have you done the 2hr river rapids trip from Kameoka, Hozugawa river, to Arashiyama Kyoto? Beautiful. Then ate traditional at Togetsutei restaurant, then to see Kinkaku, Daitokuji monastery complex to Sukiyaki restaurant for a surprise private Geisha dance and meal! Spoilt.
hey John, random question but at 12:14 the first part of the sign has the kanji for six, book and tree. i read it as ろくほんもく but how come it's pronounced as "roppongi"?
