How Crowdstrike Software Glitch Caused Air Travel Chaos 

This really shows how much control and reliance these tech and software companies have over the entire world

We've become _too_ dependent on interconnected systems using the same software. If a mistake can cause this -- imagine what something intentionally nefarious could do?

LESSON: There should always be a BACK-UP manual system in place for something like this.

This is what we feared would happen on New Year’s Day in 2000 because of the Y2K bug but luckily nothing really happened at the time thanks to it being patched in all major computer systems at the time.

IT here. It sucked having to touch all workstations that were affected but luckily it was a relatively easy fix. C-00000291 is the culprit.

"This was not a cyber attack" is an indirect way of saying "Forgive our incompetence."

I work IT for a large software dev operation in Australia... PCs started to blue screen at around 3pm... by 4pm every single PC was down in every office in Australia... within 1 hour our team determined it was crowdstrike. Although still silence from Crowdstrike... our 5 man team war roomed and found and tested the fix... rolled out the fix to every 500+ Windows PC, window servers and virtual windows machine... the worst part was fix could not be applied remotely as all workstations was bricked... we had to 1 PC at a time physically in person to apply the our fix... while ours phones was going nuts with people going nuts cuz they can't work... i walked out of office at 12am... no food no breaks as a broken IT Support.... thanks to crowdstrike...

I'm honestly surprised that Crowdstrike's stock price hasn't gone down by more than 11% in 24 hours lol. Hopefully they learnt something from this

I stayed off my computer last night because I was doing other things. So I didn't even know about this glitch until today.

I was at Boston Logan this moring arriving off a flight from Abu Dhabi, UAE. The Customs lines were WAYY longer cuz 90% of the booths were closed due to the software not working

My question is how did they keep records back then by with paper and pen? So why can’t we do that now?!

Somebody’s head in CrowdStrike has to roll for this one. I, too, is stranded in Greece for another 3 days - missing work, incurring additional living expenses.

Y’all. This frustrates me to no end. My parents and sisters were supposed to be flying home from a two week trip in Europe, and instead they’re stuck in Switzerland for at least two more days. 🥺

Of course this will happen again (either by accident again or a hack) because we say we learn our lesson, but in truth we never do. We rely too much on computers and never have multiple backup plans for situations like this.

I would be tired too if I had gone to that insane convention.

It has been months since the last time I update any of my computers. Learnt my lesson from years ago due to a certain update which caused me to do a fresh recovery.

Retail stores were affected too. We had no Internet so ppl couldn't get cash back or pay with a debit/credit card. ATM were down, WiFi down so no Internet on the phone. I got on FB that morning and saw an article about it and remember reading comments of ppl thinking it was fake bc their Internet was fine and then 30 mins later my Internet crashed.

Looking at numbers of delayed/cancelled flights today, Minneapolis, Laguardia, and Atlanta (read: delta hubs) were statistically performing pretty horribly, along with Houston, Newark, and Amsterdam Schipol. LAX and JFK were doing pretty well. ORD, Boston Logan, and Dulles were about average in terms of delays and cancellations. Travel this weekend is not going to be fun, with over 60k delays and 5k cancellations worldwide today. Stay safe!

This must be so extremely miserable being stuck at the airport when a glitch happens. Fortunately, I’m not traveling right now. I hope this unexpected glitch get fixed for the USA airports across the country.

I remember this happened to me last Friday. My bus came early and told me about it. She wasn't sure about me going into work that day. Gratefully, i work at the library, and we weren't hit that bad, but boy did it cause some inconvenience to others.

The main cause was that CrowdStrike likely contained an error in its programming or configuration. The error could have been a bug, a compatibility issue, or even a mistake introduced during development. When the update ran on Windows systems, the bad code interacted with the operating system in an unexpected way. This could have caused system resources to be overloaded, corrupted memory, or triggered security measures that resulted in a crash. So, they will need an IT to remove the driver manually, or just resetting the PC again

Ohh, this is just the beginning!

Y2K Part 2: Chaos boogaloo

I read this comment on a New York Times article about the whole Crowdstrike/Microsoft outage that perfectly encapsulates the absurdity of this whole thing, and it was one of the highest rated comments too: "Gee whiz maybe every company on Earth shouldn't outsource their entire IT cloud security infrastructure to a single point of failure? Maybe it's also bad to have have that single point of failure be a tech company that outsources their workforce to developing countries and puts more effort into optimizing their stock price instead of optimizing their testing procedure before pushing updates. Maybe I'm just a boomer, but perhaps all these companies who downsized and outsourced their own IT departments to death over the past decade had it coming?" Bingo. Exactly damn right.

This is what I was afraid of when we became too dependent on technology. When something goes wrong like this, it becomes chaotic. All the records you have digitally become inaccessible. This is why I keep important stuff in physical form.

I was flying and didn’t know that it was an IT outage I was bawling my eyes out trying to figure out why I couldn’t get on the flight a TSA agent tried calming me down and showed her badge to her lower in command to let me thru and fly on spirit
